Hello and welcome to English o’clock!

Si eres seguidor/a del programa English o’clock, habrás escuchado esta apertura mil veces porque es como saludo a mis
oyentes todos los días de lunes a viernes a las 4 de la tarde en la radio de Vaughan. Si no conoces el programa, te quiero
explicar un poco cómo funciona:

¿Qué es English o’clock?

English o’clock es un programa de radio que se emite en la radio de Vaughan en vivo de lunes a viernes de 4 a 5 de la
tarde. Su objetivo es llevar a aquellos alumnos con un nivel básico de inglés a un sólido nivel intermedio. Esto se consigue
porque enseño del mismo modo en el que lo haría en una clase presencial en las aulas de Vaughan Systems. ¿Y eso cómo
es? Sigue leyendo.

¿Cómo es una tÍpica clase Vaughan?

Una típica clase Vaughan se compone de lo que los profesores llamamos drills. Los drills son ejercicios cuyo objetivo
es desarrollar una dinámica de preguntas y respuestas sobre una diversidad de puntos gramaticales, vocabulario,
traducción y elementos básicos del inglés como son los números, las fechas, las horas o las fracciones, entre muchos
otros. Estos drills llenan todas las clases de Vaughan y mantienen al alumno en un entorno dinámico en el que habla
más él que el profesor. El profesor pregunta y corrige cada error que pueda haber, desde la pronunciación hasta la
estructura de una frase. Es por ello que el alumno siempre sabrá que su respuesta final es la acertada y, en vez de
interiorizar sus errores, interioriza y consolida la forma correcta. Otro elemento fundamental en Vaughan y en English
o’clock es el continuo repaso de los elementos más sencillos del inglés, que a pesar de su facilidad, mucha gente no
domina porque considera que los phrasal verbs o estructuras como el tercer condicional, les subirán más el nivel.
Esta creencia es errónea ya que manejar a la perfección los verbos to be, to do, to have, to go y to get, por ejemplo,
es mucho más importante que manejar el tercer condicional por el mero hecho de que empleamos estos verbos en
nuestro lenguaje habitual mil veces más que el tercer condicional.

¿Cómo es el libro?

El libro tiene 4 partes: Basics, Question Mix, Oral Agility y Drills, Drills, Drills.

Basics: En esta sección encontrarás elementos como números, fechas, horas, un árbol genealógico, años, etc.
Estos elementos, aunque no todos, son recurrentes en todas las clases.

Question Mix: El Question Mix es una serie de 40 preguntas con las que abro el programa todos los días.
Estas 40 preguntas recogen puntos gramaticales y vocabulario ya conocidos para ir calentando motores y repasar
al mismo tiempo lo que ya se ha visto.

Oral Agility: Aquí trabajamos Negative questions y Mastering the interrogative; dos de los drills de
Vaughan más característicos. En Negative questions el propósito es desarrollar la capacidad de hacer preguntas
negativas (I wasn’t invited to the party. Æ Why weren’t you invited to the party?) mientras que en Mastering
the interrogative el objetivo es preguntar por un elemento dentro de una frase (The pen is on the floor. Æ Where
is the pen?).

Drills, Drills, Drills: En esta parte hay más de 170 drills de diferentes puntos gramaticales que
ayudan al oyente y alumno a ganar agilidad. ¡OJO! Aunque he intentado explicar brevemente puntos gramaticales
que considero especialmente difíciles, te recomiendo hacerte con una copia del Student’s Manual: El libro clave del
estudiante de inglés ya que además de explicar la gramática en detalle, he seguido su estructura para elaborar el
contenido de English o’clock.
¿Qué otros libros se usan en las clases de English o’clock?

Principalmente este. Antes de cada ejercicio les digo a mis oyentes qué drill vamos a hacer y en qué página se encuentra.
Así pueden seguirlo desde sus casas mientras que escuchan el programa o, incluso, si no lo han escuchado o quieren
repasar, lo pueden hacer escuchando el podcast después. Seguidme en mi cuenta de Twitter (@english_oclock) para
más información sobre los drills que hacemos y ejercicios adicionales que puedan ir surgiendo. Otros libros que uso
habitualmente en las clases son el Translation Booklet: Habla inglés con fluidez y Vocabulary Booklet. A veces, para repasar
puntos gramaticales más específicos, utilizo Learn to SPEAK UP!, un libro que recoge listas de traducción sobre puntos
gramaticales.

¿Para quién es el libro?

Para todo el mundo, independientemente del nivel que tenga. Este libro no solamente es útil para los oyentes de English
o’clock o alumnos que quieran estudiar inglés con el programa. También es un libro que proporciona más de 15.000
preguntas que ayudarán a ganar confianza y agilidad con el inglés. Sirve como guía de autoestudio porque todos los drills
están grabados completamente o parcialmente para que uno pueda consolidar lo que está aprendiendo. Además, este
libro es una joya para todo tipo de profesores, tanto de colegios como de institutos o escuelas oficiales, ya que gracias a
sus infinitos ejercicios ya preparados todos los profesores podrán llevar un poco del método Vaughan a sus clases.

Tras numerosos años enseñando, muchas preguntas se repiten en la cabeza del profesor. Puede que haya preguntas
repetidas en este libro o que algunas preguntas coincidan con las que aparecen en el manual. Esto no se ha hecho a
propósito sino que simplemente ha sido mera coincidencia. Por otra parte, he utilizado personajes reales con el propósito
de enseñar una estructura. Si alguien se siente mal con alguna pregunta, pido perdón de antemano ya que en ningún
momento mi intención es la de insultar o calificar negativamente a nadie.
