CENG 242 WATER SUPPLY AND WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT

SPRING 2018

HOMEWORK # 1

Homework 1 is due on Thursday March 1st, 2017 at 11:00 am. Homework 1 to be submitted by
hand.

1. A community’s population is estimated to be 35,000 people, 20 years from now. The

present population is 28,000 and the present average water consumption is 16,000 m 3/day.
The existing water treatment plant has a design capacity of 19,000 m 3/day. Assuming an
arithmetic rate of population growth, determine in what year the plant reached design
capacity. Note that most water treatment plants are designed based on the average daily
flow at the end of the design period.

2. The water usage on the day of maximum consumption for community A is as follows:

Plot a consumption-time curve like that shown in Figure 14 (Page 39 of Handout_02).

Calculate hourly cumulative consumption values and plot a mass diagram as illustrated in
Figure 15 (Page 41 of Handout_02).
(a) What is the constant 24-hr pumping rate and required storage capacity to equalize
demand over the 24-hr period? Calculate the required storage capacity as a percentage of
the total cumulative consumption.
(b) What is the constant 12-hr pumping rate and required storage capacity to equalize
demand during a pumping period between 6 A.M. and 6 P.M.? Calculate the required
storage capacity as a percentage of the total cumulative consumption.

3. A two-story restaurant, 115 ft by 105 ft, is of masonry (noncombustible) construction.

Calculate the NFF for the restaurant building and determine the duration of the fire demand
required, assuming the material in the restaurant is combustible.
