Data Warehouses and Data Mining
A data warehouse is a logical collection of information – gathered from many different operational databases – used to
create business intelligence that supports business analysis activities and make-making tasks. Data warehouses represent a
fundamentally different way of thinking about organizing and managing information in an organization.
Data warehouses are multidimensional which means that the layers in a data warehouse represent information according to
different dimensions, this is referred to as a hypercube.
Data warehouses support decision making tasks in an organization. They support only online analytical processing (OLAP).
Data Mining Tools
Data-mining tools are the software tools you use to query information in a data warehouse. Data-mining tools include
query-and-reporting tools, intelligent agents, multidimensional analysis tools, and statistical tools.
Data warehouses are often perceived as organization-wide, containing summaries of all the information that an organization
tracks. However, some people need access to only a portion of that data warehouse information as opposed to all of it. In
this case, an organization can create one or more data marts. A data mart is a subset of a data warehouse in which only a
focused portion of the data warehouse information is kept.
Data Mining As A Career Opportunity
Data mining represents a substantial career opportunity. In the business world, companies will surely need business
intelligence to make the right and most effective decisions. You don’t have to be an IT expert to do well in the data mining
career. If you know Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access, then you are in for a healthy start, as both applications have
decision support features to build a graph, perform a regression analysis, and “turn the cube” by bringing new layers of
information.
Companies such as banks, online retail stores, and other online businesses are the primary employers of data mining experts.
Data mining are usually coming from your online activities and preferences in your facebook, twitter, instagram profiles,
and also from the internet sites that you visit such as google, youtube, yahoo, etc.
Important Considerations In Using A Data Warehouse
As is true with all types of technologies, you just can’t simply implement a data warehouse and use data-mining tools and
expect an automatic increase in efficiency and effectiveness. While this is a great technology, it is also very expensive. You
need to consider if you really need this kind of technology and if it will give a substantial return of investment to your
company. Always let your business needs drive your technology decisions.

Scenario:

Every quarter, the Department of Education, Region VII conducts the Monitoring, Evaluation and Assessment (MEA) of
all schools as to their performance vis-a-vis the goals set by the department and the school’s performance based on their
School Improvement Plan (SIP) and Annual Improvement Plan (AIP). It has been observed that in previous school MEA’s,
the flow of information as well as data gathering for both the online form and the Means of Verifications (MOVs) has been
a problem due to poor information management system. As a newly assigned school head on a particular school, how will
you manage and solve this problem?
