Dear Neighbor,

After Newtown, Connecticut made sweeping changes to the state’s gun laws, and
this year we hope to do more.

In 2013 we expanded the definition of assault weapons, and banned the sale of gun
magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. A permit is now required to buy
any type of gun or ammunition. The state also has a registry of deadly weapon
offenders and a universal background check system.

Strengthening Our Gun Laws: Two Proposals

Friday, I voted in the Judiciary Committee to raise a bill to ban “bump stock” devices
like those used in the Las Vegas Massacre last year. When these devices are added
to a semiautomatic rifle, it turns that rifle into an automatic weapon.

A companion measure on “ghost guns’ prohibits those who cannot legally purchase
a gun in Connecticut from skirting our registration requirements by mail ordering
“ghost guns.”

These bills should have a public hearing in Judiciary Committee in the coming
weeks. I hope that my colleagues will join me in supporting this legislation.

Sincerely,

Patricia Dillon
