Teacher: Borkowski
Common Core Standards: Module 3
 MP.3 Construct viable arguments and critique the Lesson Title: Persistence
reasoning of others.
Objective:
 MP.8 Look for and express regularity in repeated SWBAT define the characteristics of “persistence” and
reasoning.
demonstrate these qualities.
 MP.1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving SWBAT:. determine triangle congruence by applying
them. criteria for triangle congruence
 G.CO.7 Use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid
motions to show that two triangles are congruent if and
only if corresponding pairs of sides and corresponding
pairs of angles are congruent.
 G.CO.8 Explain how the criteria for triangle congruence
(ASA, SAS, and SSS) follow from the definition of
congruence in terms of rigid motions.

Materials/Resources Needed: Lesson Summary

Opener, Professionalism Tracker, PowerPoint Slides, Students will be explicitly taught persistence during this
Projector, 9 Dot Activity, Johnny Whoop, Chart Paper lesson. Students will explore strategies for persistence
through a group activity, and practice persistence by
participating in logic games/riddles, including the 9 dot
activity and the Johnny Whoop pattern activity. Students
will lastly be given an opportunity to practice persistence
through the curriculum.
Model of Mathematics
Procedures/Instructional Activities: Instruction
Exploration: Students enter the class, pick up their notebook and begin Review
(Opener) working on the Do Now.
Time: 10 min
Students should identify corresponding angles and sides. Automaticity

When the timer has elapsed, circulate to assign students a Do-

Now score.
Have a student volunteer review the Do-Now for the class.

Engagement: Automaticity
(Lesson Review the objective by having a student read it aloud.

Time: 10 min
Display Michael Jordan quote. Cold call one student to read it
aloud.

Ask students to turn and talk to their elbow partners on the

following questions: “What does point is Michael Jordan
trying to make?”

Call on three pairs of students to share out.

Explanation: Ask students to define what is means to be persistent and Teaching New
(Core Activity) stop and jot their thoughts. Have a few student volunteers Concepts

share out.
Display the definition from Google and have a student read. Automaticity

Share/Summarize
Slide 4: Have student read question and brainstorm a list of
ways to practice persistence with their elbow partner on a Ongoing Learning &
whiteboard. Practice

Display the qualities from Costa and Kallick (2000) and ask a
student volunteer to read them aloud.

Turn and Talk: Why do we need to be persistent?

Give students an opportunity to share out their thoughts and
have a student scribe record why persistence matters.

Divide students into groups of 4 and provide each group a

colored piece of paper. Each group must brainstorm as many
strategies to demonstrate persistence in class. Circulate to
help students through leading questions to guide their
thinking.

Each group should send a representative to write down their

ideas on the whole class chart paper.

Review strategies as a whole class.

(Make sure strategies include: completing all classwork, using
Khan Academy, checking the interactive notebook, asking a
peer for help, attending coach class, using a model, etc)

Lead students in Johnny Whoop Activity, have students who

figure out the pattern repeat it and then join me at the front.
Do not let students explain the rule for other students.
Students should practice persisting through the activity, even
when they get frustrated. (The secret is to cross their arms
after completing the Johnny Whoop chant/finger counting.)

Give students instructions for the 9 Dot Activity. Students

must connect all 9 dots without raising their pencil and using
only 4 straight lines. Positively narrate as students attempt to
complete the task. Encourage students as they complain. Give
3 extra professionalism points to the two students who
persevered most obviously.

Extension: Provide students with an opportunity to practice this Habit Teaching New

teacher should circulate the room and note students who are Share/Summarize

the activity. Shout out the students who are demonstrating
the Habit of Mind and positively narrate while circulating.
Evaluation: Students grade themselves and reflect on their daily learning Assessments
