I. Preliminary Parts
Thesis Title: Advanced Organizers and Reading Comprehension
Researcher: Sheila Lopecillo Pasa
Date Completed: March 2017

II. Review Proper

A. Rationale: The researcher prompted to apply advanced organizers as a
technique of helping students understand passages. The study is conducted to
determine the effect on reading comprehension of students exposed and not
exposed to advanced organizers.
B. Theoretical Background
The study was anchored on the following theories:
1. The Subsumption Theory of David Ausubel states that individuals learn
large amount of meaningful learning from textual presentations. In fact, no
meaningful learning takes place unless a stable mental structure exists.
Hence, advanced organizers can be of help, connecting the known to the
unknown.
2. Schema theory of Anderson gives details of how the prior of learners
interacts with the reading passage.
3. Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences speculates that students learn
better and internalize lessons when more than one learning strategy is used
during instruction.
C. Statement of the Problem
The study aimed to determine the effect of advanced organizers on the reading
comprehension of Grade 10 students of Biking Technical Vocational High
School, Dauis, Bohol for school year 2016 – 2017.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the students’ grade in English in the third quarter of
SY 2016 -2017?
2. What is the reading performance of the experimental and control groups
when they are exposed to advanced organizers and traditional techniques,
repectively?
3. Is there a significant difference between control and experimental groups?
D. Hypotheses
The study hypothesized that there is no significant difference in the academic
performance in English of both groups. Moreover, it also hypothesized that
there is no significant difference in the reading performance test of the
students exposed and not exposed to advanced organizers.

E. Methodology
1. Research Design
The quasi – experimental design was utilized in the study.
2. Research Environment
The study was conducted was conducted at Biking Technical Vocational
High School.
3. Research Respondents
The participants were the two sections of Grade 10 students in Biking
Technical Vocational High School, Dauis, Bohol S.Y. 2016 – 2017.
4. Sampling Procedure
The probability sampling was used in the research.
F. Findings
1. Academic Performance. The profile of the students’ academic
performance shows that all students in both groups were moderately
satisfactory since it has a zero percentage of failing marks.
2. Performance in Reading Comprehension. The profile of the students’
reading performance reveals that both groups need improvement. In
addition, both groups are under needing improvement /moderately
satisfactory level.
3. Overall Reading Comprehension Score. The overall results in the
reading performance of the students in the control and experimental
groups showed a significant difference in their score. The results reveal
that the advanced organizers employed in the experimental group were
effective in improving students’ comprehension
4. There is a significant difference in the reading comprehension test
between the control and experimental groups.
G. Conclusion
It was concluded that the use of skimming and graphic organizers was more
effective than the direct way of teaching short stories. The increase in the
scores in the experimental group showed that the teaching technique helped
students in understanding and making sense of the text.
