NEW SYLLABUS (2015-16)

DIGITAL COMMUNICATION
Course objectives:

The course aims to:


1. Understand basic component of digital communication systems & study of
Probability theory
2. Study of source coding techniques and various data formats.
3. Students will make acquainted with digital modulation techniques and spread
Spectrum techniques.
4. To realize need of synchronization and their methods
5. Understand concept of baseband transmission and optimum detection
.

Course outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course students are able to

301.1. Analyze the design issues of digital Communication systems like


Power and Symbol error using probability theory.
301.2. Explain different source coding techniques like PCM, DM to estimate
Bandwidth, Signal to Noise Ratio.
301.3. Compute performance parameters such as Efficiency, Bandwidth, Power Spectrum,
Probability of error, of digital modulation schemes ASK, FSK, PSK and
301.4. Analyze advantage of spread spectrum techniques over conventional modulation
Techniques.
301.5. Students are able to explain the concept of optimum receiver and equalizer.

Curriculum gap:

1.The curriculum does not include software based design of digital modulation technique such which is

essential for students to understand different modulation operations (Weak PO: PO5

2.The curriculum does not include hardware based design of new modulation techniques presently used in

industries cdma,frequency hopping.(PO3)

Action plan

1.Students will be introduced with software like Scilab & LABVIEW to implement concepts of modulation
and demodulation.(new experiments of modulation and demodulation will be taken on LABVIEW
in mid of September)
2 .Students will be introduced with practical kits of cdma and frequency hopping technique .
