GOAL
To introduce the basic concepts of navigation & communication systems of aircraft.

OBJECTIVES
1.To introduce role of avionics system and its architecture
2To understand the trends in display technology
3.To understand the avionics system design development and integration using simulation tools
4To know modular navigation requirements in avionics
5.To study autopilot system principle and its function

OUTCOME
The students should be able to:
1. Use his general awareness for design and fabrication of modern aircraft cockpit. Appreciate
the need for avionics and Role of avionics
2. Identify various cock pits in real time
3. Should identify the real time applications of Data bus and in aircraft
4. Awareness of communication and navigation systems and their applications.
5. Apply basic concepts of autopilot and its function.

UNIT - I INTRODUCTION TO AVIONICS

Role for Avionics in Civil and Military Aircraft systems, Avionics sub-systems and design,
defining avionics System/subsystem requirements-importance of ‘ilities’, Avionics system
architectures

UNIT - II AVIONICS SYSTEM ESSENTIALS: DISPLAYS, I/O DEVICES AND POWER

Trends in display technology, Alphanumeric displays, character displays etc., Civil and Military
aircraft cockpits, MFDs, MFK, HUD, HDD, HMD, DVI, HOTAS, Synthetic and enhanced vision,
situation awareness, Panoramic/big picture display, virtual cockpit-Civil and Military Electrical
Power requirement standards, comparing the Military and Civil Requirements and Tips for
PowerSystem Design

UNIT - III AVIONICS SYSTEM DATA BUSES, DESIGN AND INTEGRATION

MIL-STD-1553B, ARINC-429, ARINC-629, CSDB, AFDX and its Elements, Avionics system
design, Development and integration-Use of simulation tools, stand alone and integrated
Verification and Validation

UNIT – IV NAVIGATION
Definition – Types of Navigation – Radio Navigation: ADF, DME, VOR, ILS – Inertial Navigation
System: Block Diagram Strap down INS – Satellite Navigation: GPS

UNIT – V AUTOPILOT

Autopilot Concepts – Autopilot Function – Flight Director – Follow Route – Fly Heading – Maintain
Altitude – BlockDiagram.- Longitudinal Autopilot
