How pause spaces should be integrated to provide opportunities for

psychological relief?

As cities around the world continue to grow, urban spread becomes a daunting issue. One
problem associated with urban spread is the increase in the built forms around the working
or a living space with less or no pause spaces. An issue that arises from this typology
however, is the elimination of the forced ‘break’ in daily life. In many situations
psychological pause is achieved within this transition between work/home to open spaces
or relief spaces.

Another common issue in this typology is its tendency to start feelings of social isolation
for inhabitants. It is usually seen that the use of transition spaces as the separation
between live and work creates a place for casual social interaction – where inhabitants can
‘bump into each other’ walking between their live spaces, and their work spaces.

This research will explore the concept of liminal space, in which liminal refers to the
intermediate stage of a process. The transition from alternate activities requires the
readjustment of attention and thoughts in a moment of liminality. The liminal state of mind
is where one unwinds from a particular mental state and prepares for the next. It is, in
this sense, the psychological transition.

The liminal moment is thus the freedom of thought which could provide the means for
mental relief. It has been identified that a physical separation is required between the live
and the work and the pause spaces to achieve a liminal moment within the intervention.

The focus of this research project will be to investigate how the pause spaces in a building
could be designed to provide opportunities for psychological pause – where occupants can
achieve some relief from typical pressures and irritation in their lives relating to the
spheres of home life and work life.
