Direction: List 10 advantages and disadvantages of mining on the Philippines and what’s your stand
about it.
ADVANTAGES IN MINING
 Supply of raw materials needed for construction of roads and hospitals
 Manufacturing of products, such as automobiles; employment creation; source of income; and foreign
exchange for the mining country.
 Mined substances are used to build houses and make computers and satellites.
 Electricity is also generated from mined materials.
 Well-structured mining engages with the locals and provides them with jobs, raising the living standards
of the community.
 Revenues generated from mining activities help in developing facilities, such as schools, hospitals and
other social amenities.
 Growth in businesses, such as hotels, is expected to cater to worker needs.
 Mining resources are important foreign exchange earners and contribute significantly to gross domestic
product.
 Mining is a source of mineral resources important for maintaining and upgrading living standards. It is the
extraction of valuable and non-renewable minerals or other geological substances from the earth. Mining
is intended to obtain resources that cannot be produced through agricultural activities or manufactured
artificially in a laboratory or factory.
 No destruction of Forest and ecosystem is not disturbed.

DISADVANTAGES IN MINING
 Mountaintop-removal mining, for example, allows mining companies to extract a significant amount of
coal at a far lower cost, but its destructiveness has led to protections for the environment.
 Traditional forms of mining can be unsafe for workers. Fires and collapses can be deadly, and the health
effects of mining can be devastating.
 Coal and oil release carbon dioxide when used as fuel, some argue that mining exacerbates global
warming.
 Others object to mining for the rare Earth elements essential to computer parts.
 Dangerous in nature for the miners. Persons who work in UG mines will be under Continuous danger
from Strata (from collapse from side and roof), poisonous and toxic gases. There will be danger of
explosion, fire and also inundation (flooding).
 As the working area is limited, high mechanization is limited. You cannot put bigger machine like in
surface Mining.
 Long gestation period. It took very long time to develop an UG mine before it give full production.
 Generally very high wage cost and labor intensive. As the productivity is limited.
 Overall high cost of production.
 Since mining sites are usually in the forest areas, trees will be cut while people are getting to these place.

Mining is the process of digging things out of the ground. Any material that cannot be grown must be
mined. Mining things from the ground is called extraction. As stated above, there are positive and
negative effects of mining. In my opinion in mining I am not fully opposed of it especially that I know now
that there are really advantages in having a mining corporation here in Philippines will have a positive
effect on the economy but nowadays many mining groups are targeting the Philippines because it is rich
in minerals and precious stones and because of it there a lot of problems that arises especially the
destruction of our nature. Because of this, our government raised a law to solve this problem. What I am
hoping that other mining corporations will obey the law and stop the operation if they are not aligned with
the rules and immediately close the company here on Philippines. Mining is a dangerous work operation
if it exceed it limit and can harm the people and nature. As a student, I will raise awareness to other
people and inform them the hazards in mining so that they can be able to know and not to be blinded by
these mining groups could offer and not be affected by these black propaganda. We are now in the world
where humans and the earth has this tight connection and deciding the worse decision would destroy
many lives. We must be educated and unite to take action.
