PLANT CONTROL CABINET

1. INTRODUCTION

This document describes the characteristics and functions performed by the plant cabinet
manufactured by GUASCOR POWER which can be supplied for generation plants with several
Guascor gensets installed (mandatory if the supply consists of more than 3 gensets, optional if the
supply consists of 3 or 2).
The cabinet is supplied with a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and an HMI (Human Machine
Interface). The PLC is the main controller of the installation supplied by Guascor. It communicates with
the PLCs of each genset and carries out the logic and control functions to do the following tasks:
• Remote RUN/STOP of every Guascor genset of the installation.
• Remote configuration of the starting and interacting capabilities of the gensets.
• Remote configuration of each genset power set up and reactive power control generated by
the plant.
• Remote configuration and control of the operation of the plant gensets in case of islanding
(optional feature).
• Control and displaying of the overall electrical parameters of the electrical installation.
• Remote starting and stopping of the gensets.
• Control of the resynchronization of the plant in case of islanding and is demanded coupling
again to mains (optional feature).
• Control the power interchanged with the mains (optional feature).

2. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT CONTROL CABINET

2.1. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE CABINET ENCLOSURE

The power and control cabinet will be assembled from modular steel floor standing enclosures
properly coated, manufactured by leading brands. The dimensions will be height 2.100mm (2000mm
for the enclosure and 100 for the plinth), total wide 1000mm and 600mm of depth. The color will be
RAAL 7.035 or 7.032. With the lifting eyebolts the total height is a little bigger
The physical appearance of the cabinet is shown in the figures below. First it is shown a frontal view
and next a 3D view of the cabinet (the dimensions and details are shown for information purposes
only, subject to changes).

PLANT CONTROL CABINET

2.2.3. Operator interface (HMI)

The cabinet is supplied with an operator dialogue panel which is a color graphical touch screen placed
on the cabinet door that works as a human-machine interface (HMI).
With this device the operator can display and control the whole generation plant from this single point
(although to a complete control and configuration of each genset it must be used the HMI of each
genset).

2.2.4. DC supply system

The cabinet has its own 24 Vdc supply system, consisting of:
• A rectifier and battery charger to generate dc power from the AC supply, supplying the normal
feeder 24VDC circuit for the cabinet
• A battery set of the same voltage (24 VDC) to provide the emergency 24 VDC supply.
• All of the protective devices required.

2.2.5. Cabinet Ethernet communications

The cabinet has an Ethernet switch which lets communicate the HMI and the PLC with the rest of
PLCs of the plant at the engine control cabinets supplied by Guascor.
This allows to display status and parameter variables of the gensets in the plant cabinet HMI, and to
carry out the plant control.
A typical Ethernet network layout is shown in the following figure:

In addition with the TCP/IP communication it is possible to carry out other OPTIONAL duties such as:

• Remote warnings (by GSM or similar, OPTIONAL)

• Data exchange and plant control with a SCADA (OPTIONAL)

3. PLANT OPERATION BY MEANS OF HMI

The status of the Guascor gensets, its auxiliary services and the electrical grid can be displayed and
in many cases controlled by the cabinet HMI.
The HMI is color graphic touch screen placed on the cabinet door, programmed with a set of screens
to carry out all the desired functions.
It is possible that the specific screens programmed in a particular supply would differ from those
showed in this document but for illustrative purposes these screens are significant enough. The
details, such the number of the Guascor gensets in the plant, obviously may differ from the one
presented in the pictures showed next on this document, depending on the actual details of the
Guascor supply.
The HMI is supplied with several screens, that allow the operator to control the operation of every
Guascor genset in the plant.
For example, the next screen allows to operate each Guascor genset of the plant (the genset number
is selected at the upper part of the screen, for example in the next figure the genset selected is
number 1) and display most of the main parameters of its operation.

Also the genset auxiliary systems can be controlled from another screen:

The status of the electrical grid can be displayed on another screen with a grid synoptic (the actual
synoptic displayed in a particular application will depend on the specific details of the installation and
may differ substantially from the one shown below, which is included for illustrative purposes only).

It is available always an alarm status screen where are displayed all of the active alarms in that
moment. All of the plant alarms are displayed, either the alarms generated by each genset and the
alarms generated by the elements controlled by the plant cabinet.
It is displayed a description text of the alarm, the moment of its activation and the origin of the alarm.
It can be also displayed an historic alarm screen to display the alarms active and not active with the
amount only limited by the memory capacity of the HMI.

When there is an active alarm, it can be visualized almost in any screen of the application on the
bottom part as follows:

There is a screen for each of the gensets supplied by Guascor for the plant, to display its main
parameters and the main parameters of the electrical grid and the mains connection as the shown
below (the example is for the genset number 1 in a 6 gensets plant):

It can be programmed a daily working schedule for each genset:

4. MAINS CONNECTION CIRCUIT BREAKER CONTROL

If the installation is designed to work in islanding mode, the plant control cabinet can control a mains
circuit breaker if it is equipped with the appropriate closing and tripping releases. PLC operated volt-
free contact outputs can give the signals for the closing and tripping of the mains circuit breaker.
Re-synchronization is the operation by which a plant operating in islanding mode (disconnected from
the mains) connects again to the mains and it is an optional feature of the Guascor supply that can be
carried out by this cabinet.

5. LOAD SHARING AMONG GENSETS WHEN ISLANDING (OPTIONAL)

To carry out the load sharing among gensets with the same control system, when islanding, the PLC
of this cabinet will control the power to be generated by each genset.
Through the ethernet network of the plant, the gensets that share the load will exchange the needed
information with the plant control cabinet.
