Performance Review A
1. Briefly explain your SAE and how it related to this award area.
My SAE is working at the local Corner Market during the summer. I started working there in the summer of
2016, and I also worked there this past summer as well. Their are many ways how my SAE is related to the
Vegetable Production award area. One way is Corner Market is a produce patch that grows common garden
vegetables such as tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, peppers, green beans, purple hull peas, potatoes,
watermellons, and pumpkins. Also, we sell and market the vegetables to many different people. Some buyers
will even wholesale the products that they are buying. Another way is we use the best practices to grow the
best vegetables possible. Fertilizers are applied to the plants to help get rid of bugs, and to help the
vegetables grow faster.

2. Briefly explain how your roles, responsibilities, and/or management decisions related to this award
area changed.
My roles and responsibilities have changed some since I started working at the Corner Market in the summer
of 2016. One way is the vegetables that I pick. The first summer that I worked there I mainly picked only
tomatoes, and a little bit of squash and cucumbers. This past summer I picked tomatoes, squash, cucumbers,
peppers, okra, watermellons, and green beans. I have also learned more about picking the vegetables. This
summer I was able to pick tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers by myself a lot of times since I had
learned more about properly picking those vegetables. When I was done I would load up the buckets of
vegetables that I had picked and take them inside the building where we store the vegetables after they had
been picked. During this summer I also got to train a couple of people for a brief period of time. All in all, my
roles and responsibilities have greatly changed since I started working at Corner Market.

3. Briefly explain what is the single greatest challenge you faced in this award area and how did you
overcome that challenge?
The single greatest challenge I faced was learning how to pick the variety of vegetables that are grown at
Corner Market. I picked about every certain type of vegetable except for the purple hull peas and pumpkins.
Their is a way that the vegetables have to be picked so they will be best suited to sell. For example, the
tomatoes have to be red and ripe to be picked. They also can't be too small or damaged due to bugs and
other insects. The squash also has to be a certain size to be picked. It can't be too small or too big. It is the
same with the cucumbers as it is with the squash. The reason for having certain requirements for vegetables
to be picked is customers usually will want the best produce for sell. The wouldn't want something that is too
big, too small, or damaged. I have learned by working out the Corner Market that with any business you have
to put your best products forward if you want to make a profit.

Performance Review B
Briefly explain your three greatest accomplishments or findings in this award area.

Accomplishment/Finding #1
One finding I discovered while working at Corner Market was that laying down plastic around the plants while
you plant them really pays off in the long run. The plastic that was layed down helped keep a lot of unwanted
grass and weeds out. This way made it easier for the plants to grow, and easier for the vegetables to be
picked.

Accomplishment/Finding #2
I discovered a different way that a garden can be watered. After they had layed the plastic down and planted
everything, they ran water lines under the plastic so that the water could get to the plants faster. This way you
wouldn't have to go around, and manually water everything. This new method would prove to be effective.

Accomplishment/Finding #3
Another finding I discovered was that storing the vegetables in a cool temperatured building helps the
vegetables stay fresher longer. After the vegetables were picked, they would be loaded up and stored in a
building. The vegetables would be able to stay fresh for a long time as long as they were in the building. This
way we wouldn't have to throw out as many vegetables, and would be able to sell more of them.

Performance Review C
What are three ways your experiences or opportunities in this award area will impact your future.

Impact #1
One experience is picking the vegetables. When you work out a garden you learn a lot about growing your
own food. This will help me later if I want to grow my own garden later in life to help save money and become
a more well-rounded individual.

Impact #2
Another experience is helping customers load up there purchased vegetables sometimes. It may not sound
like much, but it helps you learn how to work with customers. If I'm ever running my own business one day I
will need the people skills to be able to work with customers.

Impact #3
The work, itself, is another experience that will impact my future. A lot of the time I would be picking
vegetables at least four hours during the day. When we were really busy I would pick vegetables up to eight
hours a day. Picking vegetables in the heat was tiring work, but it will help prepare me for whatever work I will
do in my career that I choose.
