in our minds and our hearts when we share Christ with
others, when we help one another, or when we need to
know what God says about something.

In the “Keep Growing By” section of each Lesson step, a

Bible verse has been suggested for memorizing. How is it
going? Are you memorizing the verses? Why or why not?

How did Jesus use Scripture He had memorized when He

was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11)? ____________

D. Tips and Suggestions

Step Eighteen is the final Lesson. Steps Nineteen and Twenty will focus on
“Reviewing the Race” and “Looking Ahead.” Take some time at the beginning
to share with one another and pray together. Also, as you review the last ses-
sion, give attention to the five questions from Step Seventeen on making a
personal application from the Bible.
If any students came prepared to share an application, let them share
what God showed them in His Word and what they have done or are going to
do about it.
Knowing how to respond to God in obedience is extremely important!
Therefore, learning how to make a personal application is one of the most
helpful and practical lessons that anyone will learn in this series of studies. Be
sure to make this clear before you introduce Step Eighteen.

1. Memorizing His Word

Read the first two paragraphs of the section, and discuss how the Scripture
memory has been going. Be sure to talk about why they have or have not
been learning the Bible verses.
For those who have been learning the verses, let them discuss how God
has used the verses they have memorized. They can also talk about some of
the obstacles they may have encountered as they tried to keep on learning
new Scripture verses.

Answer Key
• Matthew 4:1–11: He quoted Scripture that God brought to His mind to
defeat Satan’s attacks.
• Psalm 119:11: It keeps us from sinning.
• Psalm 37:31: It keeps us from taking a wrong step.
• 1 Peter 3:15: It helps us always be ready to give an answer to someone
who asks us questions.

2. Meditating on His Word

Read the two paragraphs at the bottom of the first page. Then answer the
question.

Answer Key
• Psalm 48:9: His love.
• Psalm 77:11–12: His miracles.
• Psalm 145:5: His glory and His miracles.
• Psalm 119:23: His teachings.
• Psalm 119:27: His marvelous deeds/doings.
• Psalm 119:148: His promises.

3. The Tree and River

Read Psalm 1:2–3 and take a few minutes to discuss how Christians can be
strong and fruitful like the tree.
After this brief discussion, look at the A-E-I-O-U method for meditating on
God’s Word. Below is an example of a meditation on Psalm 23:1 – “You, Lord,
are my shepherd. I will never be in need.”

A Ask questions: Who wrote this? Who is mentioned? Why is God called a
“shepherd”? What is a shepherd? What does a shepherd do? When do I
need a shepherd? When am I like a sheep? What are some of my needs?
Can God meet all of my needs?
E Emphasize the different words: “YOU, Lord, are my shepherd.” “You, LORD,
are my shepherd.” “You, Lord, ARE my shepherd.” “You, Lord, are MY shep-
herd.” “You, Lord, are my SHEPHERD!”
I “In your own words:” God will take care of all my needs, just like a shep-
herd cares for his sheep.
O Other Bible verses:
• John 10:14 “I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep, and they know Me.”
• Hebrews 13:20 “God gives peace, and He raised our Lord Jesus Christ from
death. Now Jesus is like a Great Shepherd whose blood was used to make
God’s eternal agreement with His flock.”
• Jeremiah 3:15 “Then I’ll appoint wise rulers who will obey Me, and they
will care for you like shepherds.”
U Use it: Each day for a week, I’ll write down one characteristic of a shep-
herd. I will praise God each day for that particular characteristic. I will also
tell my friends what I am learning about Jesus as my Shepherd.

4. The Strong Man

Note the Word of God in the person, making him strong. Read the paragraph.
It is a transition between this Step and the next session.

5. The “Keep Growing By” section

Encourage the people in your group to select a Bible verse from the Gospel
of Mark to meditate on, using the “A-E-I-O-U” method. You can also let them
know that, in the next session, we will be reviewing what God has been
teaching us. The memory verse is Psalm 119:97. Close your time praising God
and praying together.
