OVERVIEW
Globally, the energy industry is in a period of flux. Changing balance of supply and shifts in demand are transforming
the industry’s approach to short and long term planning. RINA Consulting’s Oil & Gas team is ready to meet these
new challenges. We recognize that the strategic goals of optimized energy and material consumption, respect for the
environment, sustainable business, safe operations, asset integrity and efficient production are critical to success
in today’s market. Our services are tailored to this end, helping Clients attain their goals through custom-made
engineering solutions. Investments require prompt, far-sighted decisions to exploit opportunities, to bring down
costs and improve safety, accessibility, duration and performance of assets: that is when major companies rely on
our team’s skills and experience.
RINA Consulting’s involvement spans the life of Oil & Gas projects. During the initial phases we perform concept
selection and economic/technical feasibility assessments. When a solution has been identified we provide the
necessary site surveys, environmental activities and FEED (Front End Engineering Design) engineering to progress
towards the investment decision. Our Project Management Consulting (PMC) team supports Clients from tender
through construction and commissioning, providing skilled construction managers and discipline leads for a
successful project. Efficiency of the final operation is ensured by proper attention in design to reliability centred
maintenance, computerized maintenance management systems, risk based inspection and right first time start-up.

SITE CHARACTERIZATION
RINA Consulting offers a full range of marine and terrestrial geoscience services. Our team performs all site
characterization required to carry out design of engineered facilities and mitigate project risks. We deal with the
existing site environment: the earth on which the facility will be based, the sea or air with which the structure will
interact, and external environmental events which may affect the project (earthquakes, landslides, floods, windstorms,
faults, tsunami etc.).
Activities
Geoscience input is required for all man-made structures, from offshore oil platforms and pipelines to mines,
ports, infrastructure, nuclear power plants and LNG terminals. We provide the basic data for design, and carry out
special studies such as geotechnical engineering and monitoring. At RINA Consulting we believe that a thorough
understanding of the site is essential for the success of any construction project.
We gear our services to provide the most up-to-date technologies, whether collecting high quality soil samples in
adverse environments or quantifying seismic risk for a critical facility.

SIMULATION & MODELING
Exploitation of unconventional reservoirs and life extension of existing facilities, as well as modelling of complex
behaviours for critical equipment and processes are key drivers for the Oil & Gas industry. These continuously
evolving engineering challenges require cutting-edge skills applied through state of the art tools and models. RINA
Consulting supports decision makers, through identification of criticalities, systems and operations modelling,
simulation of evolving scenarios and problem solving mitigation measures.
Capabilities
Our highly qualified personnel use state of the art methods and software, such as SACS, ISYMOST, NSO, OPTIMOOR,
MOSES, ORCAFLEX, AQWA, POWERSIM, MATLAB, NAVAL++, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, STAR-CCM+, FLUENT, FDS.

CONCEPT, FEASIBILITY & DESIGN
RINA Consulting is well acquainted with complex Oil & Gas projects. We have the multidisciplinary expertise to
support Clients through the entire design process, from the initial project idea to the delivery of the final facility.
Concept selection and option ranking: in large projects, preliminary studies are undertaken to determine whether
it is worthwhile to proceed to a feasibility study stage and to start drafting successful, tailor-made solutions
Technical and economic feasibility studies: when the concept has been selected, technical and economic feasibility
studies address the critical issues and challenges posed and define the technical solutions to be adopted. We
typically set up a multidisciplinary task force for a feasibility study, to ensure that all aspects of the project
are considered and that solutions ensuring smooth permitting, good commercial performance and profitable
operations are defined
Basic design and FEED: defines concepts and produces relevant technical specifications to allow the project to
proceed to the EPC phase. We offer all the services necessary to develop basic design and FEED of the main
Oil & Gas assets (e.g. onshore and offshore pipelines, offshore and subsea structures, LNG onshore and floating
terminals etc.) in compliance with internationally recognized design codes. Our team uses commercial and
proprietary software in combination with engineering judgement to lay the groundwork for a successful project
For the detailed design of onshore and offshore Oil & Gas facilities, RINA Consulting uses the most advanced
calculation and 3D modelling tools to ensure an integrated multidisciplinary product covering all engineering
disciplines and providing Clients a complete project development

PMC & FIELD SUPERVISION
Major Oil & Gas players know that multimillion-dollar projects can fail due to lacks in project management and
technical capabilities. RINA Consulting’s Project Management Consulting (PMC) team offers Oil & Gas Clients 360°
assistance to manage suppliers and contractors during all phases of a project: tendering, design and construction.
During tendering, we support Clients to define contractual strategy, produce the technical documentation for
the invitation to tender, develop scoring models and evaluate the tenders according to Client’s priorities
During design, we deploy our teams of engineers to ensure that engineering progresses according to contractual
provisions, from both technical and schedule point of view
During construction, we make sure that contractors work according to quality, safety and environment standards,
within cost and time constraints set by the contract
Our commissioning team brings the experience and knowhow needed for a successful start-up. From development
of procedures, checklists and schedule in the home office to provisional and final acceptance runs, we help
contractors and owners in achieve a safe, efficient handover
Our project managers, planners, field engineers and supervisors can cover requirements arising from all areas
and stages of a project, including engineering, construction, fabrication, testing, transportation, installation, pre-
commissioning, commissioning, start-up, handover, training and operation & maintenance support.

OPERATION & MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING
Operability assurance is the link between a complex facility design and its operational performance. It refers to all
the activities that ensure an asset is ready for transition from the EPC contractor to the owner. Services range from
preparation of operation and maintenance manuals to criticality assessments and formal maintenance & inspection
programs. Risk-based analyses (RBI/RCM), computerized maintenance & inspection management systems, along
with spare parts studies and management, are aimed to optimize OPEX. Our experienced and qualified personnel
deliver a safely prepared plant ready to achieve a successful start-up.
