THEORY:

[] Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness and understanding of someone or something, such

as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or
education by perceiving, discovering and learning. Knowledge can refer to a theoretical or
practical understanding of a subject. A further synthesis of this understanding converts
factual understanding to analysis and formation of ideas.

“Knowledge that does not travel, shrivels “- Indian pastoral communities

Knowledge must be shared in order to expand and embrace. It contracts in isolation.

[] InstitutionalInstitutions are structures and mechanisms of social order and cooperation

governing the behavior of a set of individuals.Institutions are identified with a social purpose
and permanence, transcending individual human lives and intention.

[] Communication is a specific form of interaction that involves an exchange of information.

It does not necessarily need human actors.

The PARK will be an extension of the universities that are around the Bandirma .While
behaving as the living room of the local. Production and creation of knowledge is the role of
Bandirma Park which will be an urban extension for research and development. It will
permeate into the civic life of Turkey.

Therefore, the park is a space designed for four types of communications that are vital for
production for knowledge and collaboration.

Starting by questioning, understanding and deconstruct the basics of each typology of

function.

THE SITE:

Built and rebuilt itself, Bandirma has stood the test of adversities and thrived. It is a port
town of Marmara Sea. It is located in the middle of the local trade route triangle with
İstanbul, Bursa and İzmir at the corners. Industrial facilities are clustered around the centre
while the economic backbone of the villages is agriculture. After 1980, the food sector
became the main area of industrial investment while there are investments of leading
national companies. Bandirma is an industrial town with agriculture as the economic back
bone.

#Bandirma is representative of Duality.

#Replacing the military centre with a knowledge core is symbolic of a powerful social and
political progress.

Bandirma Park: knowledge as a new culture.

The design
Connectivity

Bandirma port, Roads and Railways provide a limited connection of the site to the
neighbouring cities. By carefully integrating the 3 modes of commute with Bandirma Park
will add to the larger picture of having a diversity of people on site. This will contribute to
making Bandirma park rich platform for a rich interaction.

Urban connectivity diagram:

a. Pedestrian
b. Train and bus movement
c. Car movement.

Destination for EXPERIMENT The campus aims to be an incubation center for new ideas,
researches and collaboration .The Designed Porosity of the institution makes sure of the
ambient presence of the city and surroundings. Subconsciously guiding and adding the
essence of the local to the production of the knowledge.

Edge Conditions of the site:

a. Connection of the train, sky walk and residential area, school.
b. Forming secondary loop at urban level and placing the start point of retail at it,
making retail highly accessible.
Bandirma Park becomes an extension of the housing on the western side due to the
c. Skywalk that dips underground to avoid vehicular crossing.
d. Western edge of the site is the formalized entry for hotels. It provides an option of
independent security checks.
e. The loops of eco-tourism, heritage walk and maritime museum.

From the above gestures the Park is integrated with the adjacencies .It increases the impact
zone of the site. As the global and local phenomenon combines , a unique glocal situation is
created for communication, collaboration, exploration, recreation, journeying, shopping and
civic life.
The focal point of these activities is the center piece of the site i.e. the DESIGN INSTITUTION.
In order to create familiarity and a sense of association .The study of Bandirma’s history and
morphology revealed the role of industries and ports as the key contributors of shaping
Bandirma so far. The volume of the design institute is derived from morphology of the site
and context. Deriving from the language of industrial spaces, built structure on site
and housing in Bandirma.
A. Figure ground: With average size of a continuous block ranging from 100 m to 200 m
with punctures at an interval of 70-90m.
B. site
C. Recreation zone.

D. The sheds and container

The design is developed to explore a new typology of institution. Bandirma Design Institute is
a planned as an assembly line of production of knowledge. It is placement of functions in a
progressive order of independent functions is interwoven through spaces of interaction. The
skin of the building protects the interiors of the northern winds.

a. The architectural language is created from reframing /abstracting the industrial

shed. The gesture is an ode to the past.
b. Plan
c. Plan with interaction spaces.
d. Tessellation due to wind, an acknowledgment to the strong northern winds.
e. Form as a protective skin and not a building envelop.

The protected heritage zone forms the spill out for interaction and contemplation zones
driven by the institutions area.

A distinctive urban form, which can multiply or subtract with its surrounding according to
desired function, at the same time protecting the authenticity of the inner spaces of design
institute:
(a) Expanding and being enclosed
(b) Green foliage with interaction zones with in it.
The institute is strategically located in at a height ©, close to the heritage structure and
looking onto the Marmara Sea and the city.
Design institute has a rich variety of interaction zones to facilitate collaboration and
experimentation. (d)

RETAIL: “Shopping is the last remaining form of public activity” –Rem Koolhaas

Retail areas greatly influence the fabric of the urban architectural environment. As
capitalism and materialism have ultimate control over the architecture and planning of the
current typology of retail spaces. In Bandirma Park, we challenged this existing model.
Retail at Bandirma Park represents innovation and rebel. It is a democratic space planning
where shopping seen as recreation and leisure. It is doubled up with the principle of
clustering of shops to ease revenue generation.

(a) Meandering spaces inside the cluster

(b) Flowing spaces
(c) Edge of café
(d) Edge of recreating
(e) Edge with road

Even though Parks remain an essential part of urban planning, the popularity of the same is
decreasing. –WFL Publisher .Three Factors that influence the choice of recreation are as
follows:
Report_3751ZA

1. Variety of activity- food-drink facility, accessible zones, ergonomic furniture, workshop

and spaces for collaborative exploration. (a)(b)(c)

2. Features of the area- walking areas, seating spaces, natural areas, playgrounds, plazas.

3. Accessibility of the area- connectivity to the site, location of the site.

HOTEL: The height of the hotel makes these buildings a window to the Sea of Marmara and
the Bandirma city .they are located in proximity to the highway. This makes it possible to
house formal events and ease of access for the non-local visitors.

The hotels are podium style contributing to the public-ness of the ground. The podium
connected to the ground by the form of the convention centre. Over the podium there 2 types
of hotel:

1. Business class hotel – is optimises on the area available with doubly loaded
corridors .the rooms have a view to the city and the atrium.
2. 5 star hotel – luxury rooms with a sea view and singly loaded corridors.

URBAN DESIGN: Pedestrian Connectivity to the Bandirma Park is increased by providing

direct access to the site from the Residential zones of the city.

LANDSCAPE: the landscape is zoned into 5 character areas. These are namely
contemplation, interaction, intimacy and congregation.

Wind Farms are used to harness the wind energy from the northern winds that are
prevailing on the site. The wind mills are helical in shape and appropriate in urban
environments. They are suitable for 2 reasons: 1. It can harness wind from all directions
2.safe to be used as it does not run on high speed.
