Teacher: Mrs.

Raabe-Alger
Subject Area: Biology
Grade Level: 6th Grade

Common Core Standard: MS-LS1-3. Develop and use models to describe as parts,
functions, and basic processes of cells.

Anticipatory Set: In this lesson we will further our learning from our chapter 4
from our text book on the human anatomy. What is human anatomy? Why is it
important? We are going to focus on the muscleatory system and break down the
structure and function of our bodies ending with a further look with a Bill Nye The
Science Guy Video.

Objective/Purpose: At the completion of this lesson students will have a full

understanding of the musculoskeletal system. Students will be able to accurately
label a human skeleton and know the basic functions of each area and bone
structure. Students will be able to prove their knowledge through a short quiz at
the end of the lesson with a 100% proficiency.

Input (What information is essential for the student to know before beginning
and how will this skill be communicated to students?):

Model: For the start of this lesson, students are encouraged to take notes as we
move through the slides of the musculoskeletal system. We will start with the
human skeleton (bones) labeling their main function, structural anatomy, and
groups. Throughout the slides there are key words highlighted that are hints for
the questions that are on the quiz they will take post presentation.

Guided Practice: Students will take their prior knowledge they have accumulated
from their textbook reading and apply it as the lesson breaks down the skeletal
system and muscular system down further through notes, a short quiz, and an
educational Bill Nye video.
Check for Understanding: Students will be quizzed on the knowledge they have
gained from the slides. The quiz will be presented through a Nearpod quiz that
associates directly from their reading and gives direct feedback.

Closure: Students will complete this lesson with a confidence in their knowledge
of the musculoskeletal system and will have confidence in moving further into the
section activity of labeling a life size drawing of their skeletal systems.

Independent Practice: We will be taking our learning of the musculoskeletal

system and apply it tomorrow in a hands on activity. Students will pair up into
groups of two and trace each other’s body outline on construction paper and then
draw and label their own skeletal system. These will be hung out in the hallway at
their completion to share with their parents on PTC night.
