and recovery system, an automated control system, a generator for producing electrical power and a support
platform. Energy is generated as the wind pulls the rope from a drum that is connected to an electric power
generator. This is the power phase in which electrical power is produced. The return phase begins once the rope has
been extended to its maximum length. The kite is then automatically flown into a position where its pulling force is
very low. This is when the generator acts as a motor and reels in the rope until its extended length is short enough for
the next energy-generation phase to begin. This process consumes only a fraction of the power generated during the
power phase. The residual excess energy is fed into the electrical power grid. The SkySails Power system can also be

Generator - has undergone two years of testing and company is planning to launch 2MW commercial model in 2018. The company
Airborne has also raised funding from a crowdfunding round from 350 informal investors to the tune of almost $2.25M.
eWind Solutions [Beaverton, 2013]: eWind is developing a cost effective airborne wind energy system (AWES) – a
wind energy generation system that accesses more consistent, reliable winds at higher altitudes than those reached
by traditional wind turbines. The first stage is a model designed for small farms. It bridges the gap between very small
United States Department of
renewable energy systems of less than 10 kW and utility scale systems of more than 100 kW. The company claims that $100.0K

their Airborne Wind Energy system delivers four times more electricity per dollar than conventional wind energy
Generator - systems through the use of new materials and drone technologies to harness strong, consistent winds at higher
Airborne altitudes than conventional wind turbine systems can access.
TwingTec [Dubendorf, 2013]: TwingTec is an airborne wind energy system using a small sized, tethered propeller
driven flight system. Since it does not require a tower or foundation, more than 90% of the material of a conventional
wind turbine can be saved. A unique launching and landing solution using on-board propulsion has been
demonstrated that enables a compact and mobile system to be realized. When the wind picks up, the 30 m2 Twing
(short for tethered wing) automatically launches using small propellers integrated into the wing. Mechanical power is
$132.2K Venture Kick
generated by flying autonomously controlled cycles and is transformed into electrical energy using a ground-based
generator. The flight includes 2 phases. During the power phase the Twing flies crosswind figures of eight, pulling on
the tethers which spin a drum connected to a generator. Having reached a maximum altitude, the Twing is
Generator - depowered and reeled in with minimal energy. After this retraction phase a new power phase can start. The unit can
Airborne supply up to 100 kW of electrical power.

Kitewinder [Blanquefort, 2016]: Kitewinder is developing an airborne wind energy system to harvest winds at high
altitudes. The Kitewinder consists of a propeller with three blades. Wind energy recovered from the altitude is
brought to ground through the cable that connects it to the ground station. The ground station is fully autonomous.
Generator - When the wind is strong enough to allow for the takeoff, the ground station begins unrolling the cable. Similarly, if the
Airborne flight conditions are not satisfactory the ground station retrieves the propeller by wrapping the cable.

Kitenergy [Turin, 2010]: Kitenergy is an innovative technology to convert high-altitude wind energy into electricity, by
exploiting the flight of automatically controlled tethered wings (or power kites). The kites operate between 500 and
1000 m above the ground, where strong winds blow practically everywhere in the world, and electricity is generated
Generator - at ground level by converting the traction forces acting on the tethers into mechanical and electrical power, using
Airborne suitable rotating mechanisms and electrical generators.

E-Kite Wind Power Systems [Barneveld, 2013]: E-Kite Wind Energy Systems is active in designing, manufacturing and
marketing of kite power systems which are a category of airborne wind energy systems. The company claims that with
these systems, electricity can be generated from wind through kites at >50% lower cost of energy compared to
wind turbines of similar capacity. They have begun initial tests by developing a 50kW kite power system, targeted at
Generator - local energy co-operatives, farmers, land owners and companies in rural areas. A prototype of this model is currently
Airborne being tested.
KiteGen [Milan, 2007]: KiteGen is an Airborne Wind Energy generation system which is using a radically different
technology to generate power instead of the now matured wind turbine systems. The KSU (Kite Steering Unit) is the
unit that allows to automatically pilot a power kite or an array of power kites over a predefined flight path, these
power kites are maneuvered by deferentially unrolling and recovering the two lines on two winches controlled by
Generator - engines. With such configuration, a single KiteGen power plant is able to intercept very large amounts of altitude
Airborne wind, which is finally converted to electricity through a generator on ground.
Aap Ahrens, Ahrens & Partner [Berlin, 2006]: X-Wind is a completely new wind energy technology which is three
times more efficient and cost-efective than conventional wind turbines. This system combines automatically steered
kites with the generator system of trains. This technology allows to harness the energy of wind at an altitude of up to
500m/1.500 feet. The steering units to steer the kites safely are mounted on the ground vehicles. Four tethers are
steering the kite. To generate the power, cable car systems are being used. The grounded vehicles are connected via a
steel cable laid vertically/perpendicularly to the rolling stock. As in cable car and chair lift systems energy is
Generator - transmitted through the rolling stock to bring the system in motion. In the same reverse manner the energy
Airborne generated from the kites is transmitted via the tow lines into the NTS grounded system.

Joby Energy [Santa Cruz, 2008]: Joby Energy is developing airborne wind turbines to harness the consistent power in
high-altitude wind to provide renewable energy. They claim that the consistent winds at higher altitudes allow the
system to achieve a net capacity factor of approximately 70% versus 35% for surface-based systems, at a significantly
lower costs since it requires less materials to be built as compared to a surface-based turbine. The entire system has a
Generator - multi-wing structure supported by an array of turbines. The turbines connect to motor-generators which produce
Airborne thrust during takeoff and generate power during crosswind flight.

Airdash [Atlanta, 2015]: Airdash builds airborne wind turbines which soars 600 m above the ground to generate
energy from wind. They use a balloon filled with lifting gas, with the generator fit inside the balloon which generates
electricity using the high wind speed of nearly 236 m/s available at 600 m. The company claims that their turbines

Crosswind Power [Vancouver, 2009]: Crosswind Power is developing a kite based airborne wind energy system for
generating power. As the kite flies across the sky it generates lift which is transferred to the ground by a high strength
rope that is wound around the drum of a specially designed winching system. This winch transforms the pull of the
rope into electricity using the on-ground generator. The company was planning to offer a 30kW system, specifically
Generator - designed for integration into diesel powered grids. Company is in dormant state due to lack of funds since March,
Airborne 2012
Alula Energy [Tampere, 2011]: The company develops fully automatic takeoff- and landing systems -TLS- for airborne
wind energy systems and tethered UAV applications. The solution of generating power using airborne wind energy
system by Alula Energy is based on a durable and light carbon fibre composite plane, structurally very similar to large
glider planes and military UAV drones. The mechanical energy generated by the airplane is transferred to the ground
using very strong, yet light, polyethylene tether. The automatically guided plane flies crosswind to create a strong pull

Golden Turbine [Madrid, ]: Golden Spiral Turbine is an innovative wind turbine developed by the company which
copies the law of nature found in wind and water behavior such as in hurricanes, tornadoes, dirt devils, or just water
going down the drain. Due to its aerodynamic profile, the golden spiral turbine is self orienting when tethered or
attached to a horizontal pivot point. The shape of the blades and the smaller radius minimize drag while still collecting
the kinetic energy efficiently. It is a design that is being claimed to work for both wind and water with considerably
high output and low drag. It is very simple comparing to the turbines out there in terms of cost, manufacturing,

Solar Wind Energy Tower [Gillingham, 2010]: Solar Wind Energy is designing and developing large Downdraft Towers
that use non-toxic natural elements to generate affordable electricity and clean water. The tower developed by the
company features multiple wind turbines which are located at the base of a large hollow tower. The inherent
technology using which the tower is made, created a downward draft of air towards the wind turbines, which is
further utilised by the generator to produce electricity. To complement its renewable energy technology and aid in its
expansion efforts, Solar Wind Energy developed a proprietary software based analytical program to determine the
Turbines energy generation capabilities of its Towers based on the climate in geographic locations around the world

Turbines ZCT thus increasing efficiency.

Stellenbosch Wind Energy Technologies [Stellenbosch, 2011]: The Stellenbosch Wind Energy Technologies (SWET)
turbine is based on a patented proprietary technology, the Slip Synchronous Permanent Magnet Generator (SSPMG).
This technology allows a permanent magnet generator to be connected straight to an electricity network, without the
use of an inline rectifier, inverter or gearbox. According to the company this produces a robust generator, suitable for
an unstable electricity network and various unknown conditions. This is executed through a technology which has
been developed by the SWET, called Grid Connection Controller (GCC) that automatically synchronizes the generator
with the electricity network using wind alone. Once the generator is connected to the grid, the GCC monitors the
operating conditions at the point of connection to ensure that all systems are performing at maximum energy output.

Aerial Genesis [Salt Lake City, 2015]: Aerial Genesis is developing a form of airborne wind energy system which works
similar to a vertical axis wind turbine. It has the structure similar to a balloon with blades. The turbine has just the
blade component in helium filled balloons tethered hundreds of feet in the sky where the wind is quite strong. They
transfer the torque down to the ground using a very strong and lite, carbon fiber tube, which ultimately gets
converted into electricity through the generator on ground. The company also claims that their 6 kilowatt unit weighs
in at just 300 lbs which is quite light as compared to contemporary wind turbines, thus reducing the cost of materials.

Rotowind System [Mesa, 2013]: Rotowind Vertical Axis Wind Turbines with Airfoils (VAWTA) generate safe, clean,
renewable energy. Rotowind units are durable and scalable at the same time. User can begin from a small single
turbine on land to multiple tiered rigs at sea, it's designs can accommodate everything from small do-it-yourself
home, farm, and ranch projects to giant utility-scale power-generating installations. Multiple units can be stacked over
each other to allow multiple turbines to occupy one tower and floating platforms that tie multiple towers can be tied
Turbines together into a single towable "rig"
Regenedyne [Sierra Vista, 2007]: The company was formed for researching and developing the next generation of
vertical axis wind turbines using maglev technology. The company is still in early testing phases. In 2014 they had
decided to bring forth their first production validation unit of 210 kW generation capability. As claimed by the
company, the aerodynamic design of the system captured the kinetic energy of all the wind passing through the swept
area. The design uses both lift and drag for power as the air passes through the wind turbine. Simulations indicated
that streamlines leaving the unit are smooth, allowing closer packing in a wind turbine field. The second design of
incorporating magnetic levitation allowed the turbine to spin freely with only the resistance of air. There were no
mechanical linkages or gears to wear out and replace, allowing maximum power output in the wind field and
Turbines operation at lower elevations than traditional propeller based devices.

McCamley [Keele, 2011]: Mccamley is a small wind turbine developer for urban areas. Its current product is a 12 kW

Pterofin [Seattle, 2012]: Pterofin is a clean technology company developing an innovative energy generation devices
based on biomimicry. Their current focus is for customers who at the village level faces high costs and inefficiencies in
pumping water from deep wells using existing electric pumps or outdated wind turbines. Pterofin’s oscillating wings
capture energy from light winds, even below 5 MPH, to generate electricity or pump water. It is a simple
counterbalance system that synchronizes the wings’ position and speed with a mechanical leverage point on the body
of the device. The outcome is a coordination of harmonizing the wings pitch angle to a natural frequency of a fluids
specific velocity. This oscillating motion is low in RPM and high in torque, which allows it to be extremely efficient at
pumping water. When a Pterofin encounters high winds, gust, or debris, a rotational control system allows the wing or
wings to sweep back into the direction of the current, bringing Pterofin power to a halt and making it act at that point
simply as a weather vane. This makes it much more aerodynamic and gives it a far more streamline profile than any
