Paul Mueller Company is well known for its processing and storage tanks for a wide
variety of industries. Every tank we build starts the same way… with a tank cylinder.
We regularly custom fabricate tank cylinders as long as 67 feet in length and sections
as tall as 16 feet. Some are as thin as 14 gauge or as thick as 3/4-inch plate. Some are
equipped with our patented Temp-Plate® heat transfer surface for specific
requirements.
Whatever your specifications, check into our capabilities. We’ll even deliver on our
own fleet of trucks and custom-designed trailers.
HEAT TRANSFER
Half-Pipe Coil
Mueller half-pipe coil heat transfer surface handles large volumes of flow and is suited for high-
pressure applications as well as low-pressure drop requirements. It is ideal for cyclic heat transfer
conditions in which heating and cooling cycles occur several times a day, as it is very resistant to
stress corrosion cracking.
Available in a variety of materials, half-pipe coil can be used for heating or cooling using steam, hot
oil, water, glycol, ammonia, and refrigerants. ASME code stamping is available.
Mueller’s patented Temp-Plate heat transfer surface provides precise, consistent control capability
with minimum pressure drop. Its patented design provides extremely efficient heat transfer
performance more economically than competitive types of heat transfer surface. Spot welded and
inflated channels induce the fluid turbulence necessary to attain high heat transfer coefficients.
Lower flow rates are necessary to accomplish high velocities of heating or cooling media.
Mueller dimpled heat transfer surface is ideally suited for applications involving high pressure
and temperature extremes. It can be routinely fabricated in an almost unlimited number of shapes,
sizes, and materials to fit any vessel design. Styles are available for use with almost any type of
refrigerant or heating media.
Heat Transfer at Work for You
Paul Mueller Company offers a variety of heat transfer surface options to meet your
particular needs. We work closely with you on each project to select the right surface for
your equipment.

GENERAL INFORMATION
General Information
Head Facts
Circle Cutting: Complete circle cutting facilities are available if rectangular blanks for heads are furnished by
the customer.
Heads with Seams: Shipment can be expedited by putting a welded seam in the head, provided customer’s
pressure calculations will permit it. This seam is made by ASME code-qualified welders. In the case of ASME
heads, we can X-ray the seam if required. Partial Data Sheets (ASME Form U-2) can be supplied.
Forming: All heads are cold formed. Heads are formed to outside diameter, except elliptical and hemispherical
type heads which are usually made to inside diameter. Flanged and dished heads above 18" can be made to any
OD or ID. Due to shipping requirements, we can form heads in one piece to a maximum of 8,500 pounds.
Mill Test Reports: Original mill test reports are provided with all heads when Mueller supplies the material.
Delivery and Shipping: Heads normally require three weeks to form, depending upon the size and quantity.
Heads up to 204" can be shipped via truck; special framing may be required on some larger sizes.
Terminology
Thickness (THK): All thickness dimensions are considered nominal unless otherwise specified. In cases where
a minimum thickness is required, this should be clearly indicated on your inquiry or order.
Inside Dish Radius (IDR): ASME and standard flanged and dished heads are formed with an inside dish radius
equal to the outside diameter of the head. Also, it is possible to form heads 30" and above with a radius of dish
equal to 80% of the diameter.
Straight Flange (SF): 11/2" straight flange is considered standard for most material thicknesses. Flanges up to
3" can be supplied on some heads, providing material thickness is suitable. Heads under 3/16" thickness are
supplied with a 1" straight flange.
Center Hole: Heads 18" and larger are formed with a 13/8" - 11/2" maximum center hole. When a center hole is
not desired, it can be plugged and X-rayed if necessary.
Inside Corner Radius (ICR): The inside corner radius will be a minimum of 6% of diameter on ASME code heads.
Inside Depth of Dish (IDD): This is the depth of the head at its center, including the inside corner radius but
not the straight flange.
Overall Height (OH): The total height of the head is obtained by adding the IDD, SF, and THK together.
Both the straight flange and overall height cannot be guaranteed.
WELDS AND FINISHES
Material Finishes
Mueller products can be fabricated with any of the following material finish
options. These designations apply to stainless steel sheet, plate, pipe, and bar.
We can polish to specific Ra requirement maximums upon request.
Hot Rolled, Annealed, and Pickled (HRAP): Rough, dull surface appearance.
Most scale removed by pickling. Applies to all steel plate thicknesses above 1/4".
Also available in 7-gauge and 1/4". Specify where surface finish is a low priority.
Hot Rolled, Annealed,
and Pickled
2B Mill Finish (2B): A smooth, bright, moderately reflective finish suitable for
“as is” specifications or as a preliminary finish for further polishing. Available
only in 10 gauge or thinner sheet material.
Cold Rolled Finish: Cold rolled is a smooth, bright, mostly non-reflective finish
similar to a 2B mill finish. Available in 7 gauge or 1/4" stainless sheet material. 2B Mill Finish
No. 3 Finish
No. 4 Finish: An aesthetic industrial finish with visible grain which prevents
mirror-like reflectivity. Use where clean industrial surfaces are required. Typically
used with a No. 4 weld finish (150 grit).
No. 6 Finish
No. 7 Finish: Highly reflective surface obtained with the equivalent of a 320-grit
abrasive. Minimal grit lines. Used where product-contact surfaces are critical.
Typically used with a No. 7 weld finish.
No. 7 Finish
Industrial Electropolish
Electropolish (EP): Highly reflective surface that provides the level of product
release and cleanability required by the medical, chemical, pharmaceutical, and
electronic industries. Process removes surface materials and impurities but may
not remove nonmetallic inclusions that may be present in parent material. Used
to improve product release on any of our material finishes. Grit lines
characteristic of each finish may be visible but won’t adversely affect release
performance. Degree of improved performance depends on weld and material
finishes specified prior to EP.
Electropolish
Finishes
All heads are started with either a 2B, cold rolled or HRAP (hot rolled, annealed, and pickled) finish. We can polish
the inside or outside diameter of heads and manways to a maximum of a #7 grit finish, or we can electropolish over
any finish.
Spin polishing is done after the head is formed. The grain is finished in a radial or circular pattern, which results in
an appealing sanitary finish. This finish can be applied to both inside and outside, including knuckle radius and
straight flange.
Straight grain polishing has the same surface finish as spin polishing, but is applied while the material is in the flat.
Even though the material is paper protected during forming, some marring of the finish will occur. This marred area is
not repolished after forming. The majority of the marring occurs in the knuckle and straight flange area. Normally this
does not present any problems since the head-to-shell seam requires grinding after welding.
Straight grain polishing is approximately half the cost of spin polishing. The maximum width we can straight grain
polish is 48"; maximum thickness is 1/2".
The finish on plate heads is not guaranteed pit free. Condition of plate before polishing will determine the finish.
Descriptions of our material and weld finishes are included in the Welds and Finishes section of this catalog. The grit
or mesh size essentially defines the depth and spacing of the metal removal “cut” or grit lines on the material.
While it is possible to grind and polish every weld on a piece of equipment, in many cases it is not necessary or
practical. The following describes the various weld finishes that are available from Mueller and, where applicable, the
appropriate use of the finish.
As-Is (AI): Characterized by fine spatter and smoke and weld discoloration. Tack welds, start-stop areas, and severe
spatter are ground as required for nondestructive examination of the weld and weld area.
Sandblast (SB): Uniform, dull gray appearance to match cold- or hot-rolled material finish. Spatter, slag, and burrs are
first removed by grinding. Welds are then sandblasted to remove weld discoloration on material surfaces, leaving
a clean, banded appearance.
Glass-Bead Blast (GB): Follows sandblasting to produce a satin, gray appearance closely matching a 2B finish.
Buff (BF): A process in which the weld is brightened. There is minimal removal of weld material. This finish is not
flush and will contain crevices, ripples, silicone islands, and irregularities in the remaining weld material. The dark
lines on either side of the weld and within the weld ripple may also remain. Generally used on exterior and interior
plate surfaces where finish is not critical. Weld ripple size and appearance depends on the welding process used.
Typically used with HR, CR, and 2B mill material finishes.
Grinds
Coarse Grind (No. 2): The weld is ground flush. Characterized by coarse
grit lines which may run in any direction. Discoloration remains on both
sides of weld. Used as a preparatory finish where a flush and uniform
surface is required.
Coarse Grind
Medium Grind (No. 3): Weld is ground flush and all discoloration is
removed. A near-sanitary finish generally used where a flush and uniform
surface is required. Moderate grit lines remain.
Medium Grind
Fine Grind (No. 4): Results in an aesthetic industrial finish surface normally
used with a No. 4 material finish for applications where clean industrial
contact surfaces are required. Grain and grit lines are visible.
Fine Grind
Extra-Fine Grind (No. 6): Characterized by finer grit lines and higher
reflectivity than fine grind. Improves product release and cleanability.
Extra-Fine Grind
Ultra-Fine Grind (No. 7): A highly reflective, sanitary surface with minimal
grit lines. This finish normally used to provide excellent product release and
cleanability. Use where sanitary product-contact surfaces are most critical.
*Ra - Roughness average is the most universally recognized parameter of roughness. Its
arithmetical average definition is measured normal to the centerline (AA or CLA).
Ultra-Fine Grind
Tolerances
These tolerances apply to all heads except flared and dished, flanged only, hemispherical, and dished only:
▲ Heads will be shipped if either straight flange or height is within tolerance. We will always strive to hold both;
however, the height will be the primary dimension unless otherwise specified.
▲ If heads are ordered with the height specified as hold, maximum ±1/8", there will not be any tolerance held on
the straight flange.
▲ If we furnish material, heads will lay flat within 1/4" and will not have any abrupt changes on the edges.
This tolerance will apply to customer furnished material only if the heads are machined.
▲ Heads marked as outer heads on the shop drawing will not be trimmed unless requested.
▲ All heads 12 gauge and over 96" in diameter and all flanged-only heads will not be trimmed due to equipment
limitations.
▲ Flared and dished heads have an outside diameter tolerance of ±1/2" - 0" and an inside diameter tolerance of ±1/4".
▲ Flanged-only heads have a circumferential tolerance of ±1/8"; the overall height at the knuckle radius is ±1/2".
Warpage tolerance on the flat portion of the head will vary, depending on the diameter and material thickness.
▲ Dished-only heads have a diameter tolerance of +1/2" - 0" and dish depth tolerance of 3/4" over the tolerance
shown for dished and flanged heads. Dished-only heads will be sold on the basis of outside diameter only.
