Lab Manager: Jamar Brown, Office 1220 NCEL, jmrbrown@illinois.edu

Course objectives
Students will learn about concrete technology, science and engineering:
1. Concrete constituents: Students will develop general understanding of manufacture, selection, and
interactions of the components of portland cement concrete. The constituents include portland cement,
aggregates and, chemical and mineral admixtures
2. Fresh concrete: Students will demonstrate understanding of fresh concrete test methods. Students will
apply the standard mixture design procedure to develop a mixture based on a set of target properties.
3. Hardened concrete: Student will understand the fracture process and constitutive relations of hardened
concrete. Students will be able to identify deterioration mechanisms in concrete and suggest mitigation
strategies.
4. Special topics: Several special application cement-based materials will be presented. Students will apply
previous objectives to design mixtures that fulfill unique property sets.
