During the first semester that began in autumn 1998,

the students planned projects for
a new mountain station with a restaurant on the Piz Nair
near st. Moritz. The size,
location and function of the building were stipulated
by the ctient, the corviglia-
Piz Nair railway comPany' by means of a precise programme
of rooms. ln the second
semester, Paul Gredinger played the role of the
'concrete' client and took part in all
the discussions' ln the case of the residential building, the site
and the size were
determined by the students themselves.
The idea of a neighbourhood of high-rise buildings to the
northwest of the main
railway station in Zurich was the starting point of the
third semester. we selected
existing plots of land and divided them among the students
by drawing lots. The
students determined the size and function of each buitding,
and the only inviolable
rules were the distance from the buitding to the plot
limit and the fire barrier
regulations.
ln the final semester, in the summer of 2000, the studenG
planned their own individ-
ual architect's offices. The size of the buirdings, defined
by the number of emproyees,
was determined by a tottery process which the students
could manipulate, and they
chose the site themselves. This book contains l4
exemplary projects selected from all
the semesters.

Practice Workpieces :':'

Looked at from the material point of view, student projects are worthless. Far
removed from the onerous Processes of planning and realisation that are part of
the building business, they serve to further the genesis, development and testing of
design strategies. At the end of his apprenticeship, and according to temperament, a
mechanic or a carpenter's apprentice will either throw his practice workpieces into the
wastepaper basket with a sigh of relief, or cherish it proudly for two or three years
before discarding it forever.
Architectural works by students are practice workpieces. Nevertheless, in addition to
the formidable and arduous acquisition of craftsmanship, they - and I am speaking in
particular of these fourteen programmatic works, bear witness to the ioint quest of
teacher and pupi! for a meaningful development of the architecturat task. lt is here
that the special significance of these proiects lies. Let us consider the impressive
atmosphere of the schools and master classes, filled with a remarkable dynamic force,
where teachers fired by the passion of their calling disclose the still dormant potential
of their students and are rewarded by a magic, almost forbidden glimpse into the
future.
Still nowadays, are we vitally interested in the work of the 27-year-old Le Corbusier.
He had already realised projects in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and it was then that he made
his sketches of the Domino House. His instinctive and at the same time inherently
socially orientated will to create was inspired even then by the spirit of architectural
innovation.
Established, successful architects may dismiss these student projects with a weary and
self-sufficient gesture. To me, this is all the more reason to hope that young architects
and students of architecture will benefit by devoting their attention to the'14 Student
Projectsl
