companies to create on-premises
cloud capabilities similar to
public clouds to accelerate app
development. It’s built on a
Kubernetes-based architecture
that supports both Docker
containers and Cloud Foundry.
It also facilitates integration and
portability of workloads as they
evolve to any cloud environment,
including the public IBM Cloud.

Enhancing Security
IBM also continues to
bolster security for the cloud.
IBM PowerSC* security and
compliance manager has a new
user interface that integrates its
capabilities into PowerVC. As
clients deploy new clouds using
PowerVC, they can be assured
that the clouds have all of the
required security profiles and
connections defined within
PowerSC.
This is important as most
security vulnerabilities come from
infrastructures that don’t meet
defined security and compliance
requirements, Sibley notes.

loud deployments come in all types and sizes. Solutions that work for nimble
startups may not be appropriate for large enterprises with stringent data
sovereignty and compliance needs, for instance. But a requirement to keep
mission-critical applications and proprietary data on-premises doesn’t necessarily
preclude organizations from leveraging the flexibility of cloud infrastructure.

To address these needs, “They need to have a strategy that platform for data-intensive

EDITOR’S LETTER

All of the Product Info You Need—

And a Little More
A s a child, when my sister, who is 10 years my senior, wrote letters home from
whichever Army base she was stationed at, I corrected her grammar and sent
her letters back. Today, her letters to me are few and far between—and really short.
She’s afraid to write to me, even though I’ve changed from the cocky preteen armed
with a red pen.
Still, I’m a word girl. I always have been. Numbers aren’t my thing. So, as I was examining
investment options, I knew I couldn’t come up with a solution on my own. After searching
online, I found a directory of financial planners with offices within an hour’s drive of my
rural Minnesota home. After reading through their profiles and offerings, I found one
that suited my needs.
My other option would have been to search and try to compare them manually. The
directory took the guesswork out of my quest.
Aggregating solutions to simplify purchasing decisions is the goal of the Solutions
Edition you’re looking at right now. We’ve rounded up a host of Power Systems* software,
hardware and services to help you make informed purchasing decisions.
So, whether you need to modernize an application or you want a high availability
solution, the categorized listings in our Solutions Edition can help solve your need. Turn
to page 6 to learn more about using the guide.
Articles on key topic areas also provide additional information. The content pieces
include links to magazine articles you may have missed in 2017 or may want to re-read.
Because we recognize that the Power Systems business partners have unique
perspectives on their areas of expertise or industry trends, we invited them to write

PARTNER PERSPECTIVE

New Mandatory PCI Security

Reporting and Why You Haven’t
Heard of It
Being in the credit card processing business, we are audited continually. So, we study
the industry and Payment Card Industry (PCI) security mandates constantly.
You see dramatic news items that overshadow other important alerts. Earlier this
year, the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) mandated that all merchants,
even the smallest, are now required to complete and submit a Self-Assessment
Questionnaire (SAQ) and Attestation of Compliance (AOC).

So what?
Previously, those at “Merchant Level 4,” the lowest volume, were not required to.
These small merchants do less than a million total transactions and fewer than 20,000
ďḱŽŶĞŽŽ Ă Ž Ŷ e-commerce transactions per year. You may be one.

IRA CHANDLER – CTO

Not heard of this?
SALES@CURBSTONE.COM The people with whom you contract for card processing are banks. The PCI enforces

only contract they have with the merchant is through the merchant account that the

company is still dedicated to the As of Jan. 31, 2017, a merchant accepting credit cards is absolutely required to
IBM i. complete an SAQ. If you touch the credit cards with your workstations and servers
in any way—regardless of storage—you must complete the SAQ “D”. This 500-plus
question interrogation into your processes, systems and security can take months to
complete. It is accompanied by implementation of dictated policies and procedures.

What is the risk?

Even though your bank may not have demanded it, ignorance is no excuse if you
suffer a breach. So, as great as you think your security is, without the submitted SAQ
and an AOC signed by an officer of the company, you’re patently in violation of PCI
requirements. This exposes a company to huge fines, lawsuits and re-issuance costs
for the card numbers stolen.
We present this to alert you not just to the mandate that you likely have not yet been
required to fulfill but also to the ever-increasing requirements from the PCI. If you touch
credit card data, or even employ remote tokenization technology, make sure someone
in your organization is tasked to monitor the PCI mandates. Better yet, find a trusted
partner with expertise who can assist. The pcisecuritystandards.org website has a list
of qualified security assessors that specialize in providing authoritative guidance on
compliance.

Jon Paris and Susan Gantner - Blog On

iDevelop on RPG/Db2
Falling in love—Jon did so with the System/38 while working as a consultant, and he later
met Susan Gantner, his bride (whose career spanned more than 30 years in application
development), and the two are our collective IBM i voices in iDevelop. Too, both are IBM
Systems Magazine technical editors.
