bought a new TV on Black Friday. I’m normally not
one to fight the crowds for the latest, greatest thing,
but the performance and simplicity were tough to beat.

Whereas my previous model required plugging in a sound

system and connecting an HDMI cable to my laptop to
stream shows, my new TV features an integrated Roku
streaming device, Wi-Fi capabilities and a high-quality
sound system. As technology evolves, more and more
features are being rolled into existing products.

IBM cloud offerings function in a similar way. New addi-

web followed by the cloud before
centralized computing became

Until recently, that is. Now
cloud is sometimes viewed as
a chokepoint and the Internet
of Things may drive a massive
decentralization of both data and
processing out to the network’s
edge. Some people call this “fog
computing,” but it sounds a lot
like the client/server model to me.
The IT industry loves its terms
du jour. Service-oriented architec-
ture became microservices, and is
now known as serverless comput-
ing. Data dictionaries turned into
data catalogs. Rapid application
development became agile devel-
opment and now DevOps. Service
bureaus are now SaaS providers.
Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison
has often been chided for his rant
against cloud computing during a
Churchill Club interview in 2009,
where he called cloud computing
“water vapor” and said, “They
just change a term and they
think they’ve invented technol-
ogy,” among other highlights
(bit.ly/1lY3IaH). But he had a
point: The concept of the cloud
isn’t really all that different from
timesharing, which was invented
back in the 1950s.
This ongoing name game is part
of the natural ebb and flow of the
IT industry. After all, companies
don’t want to be associated with
an established category if they can
invent a new one. But these con-
stant terminology shifts also con-
fuse our clients. Every week, I talk
to clients who have preconceived
ideas that they need the latest hot

they really need is reliable backup

invents new terms. The more
business partners use the same
language when helping clients
make decisions, the less
confusion is caused and
time is wasted.

For example, the import/export
capabilities within PowerVC
enable hybrid clouds and smooth
transitions between multicloud
environments, in addition to
the ability to spin up a SANless
cloud with its software-defined
capabilities.
“Simplified security and
compliance management,
compelling malware and intrusion
prevention with PowerSC, as well
as integrating with PowerVC in
order to secure clouds right from
the beginning are now available
with PowerSC 1.1.6,” Bührer says.
The PowerHA V7.2.2 UI enables
you to not only see the health of
your clusters with a single glance,
but now you can also manage your
clusters. This includes stopping
or starting a cluster, moving
resources or providing zoning on a
multitenant cloud.
From Monitoring
to Managing
PowerHA 7.2.1, which was
announced in October 2016,
allowed clients to monitor the
status of a cluster or groups
of clusters from a single view
through a GUI. This simplified the
process of determining the health

and status of the clusters. Now,
clients can manage the clusters
from this same UI.
With this release, it’s possible
to add a cluster to a zone, assign
users to it and give those users
specific role-based access
authority. It’s an efficient, secure
way to set up and manage the
environment, according to Finnes.
“And we have added many more
abilities as well. You can, for
example, stop all cluster services.
You can remove a cluster. You can
stop a cluster service on a node or
move a resource group, all from
the UI. You might have multiple
clusters, and you might have
multiple zones. You can zero in on
them, set them up in specific ways,
and then perform management
functions on them. Prior to
this, everything had to be done
manually using a command-line
interface or System Management
Interface Tool panels,” he says.
Making cluster management
easier allows organizations to
better allocate their personnel.
Junior staffers can handle
more of the administrative
work with clusters because the
command-line interface work is
no longer required.
“You save time with
management and you’re also
reducing the chance of human
error,” Finnes says. “You have
a single window into the world
of your clusters. Operations are
intuitively easier. This is going to
release a certain amount of human
resources and also minimize the
dependency on people to identify
and act on issues. Even for a two-
node cluster, it’s going to be a
time saver.”
Organizations can assign
different levels of access to the
clusters for individual employees.

cloud. “What’s exciting is we’re
seeing an emergence of cloud
providers that will host more
solutions, making it easy to
move AIX between public and
private clouds,” Robinson says.

Robinson points to the IBM

as being particularly beneficial.
“Most clouds have a back-end
infrastructure that is limited to
x86 workloads. Skytap is one of
the first cloud providers to offer
‘virtual data center’ infrastructure
that allows deployment and
management of both IBM Power*
and x86 workloads,” he says.
“That’s key to using AIX
stacks in the cloud. This opens
up opportunities to deliver
innovative new workloads and
business cases.”
For example, if a client has
a project using AIX behind a
firewall, it’s typically well-secured
and tightly controlled, Robinson
says. “Now the cloud allows
developers to experiment and
share without putting internal

AIX systems at risk. This allows
clients to experiment, like in a
sandbox, and it’s great for an agile
‘fail faster’ DevOps approach.

Using V7.2.2 with ICSS delivers
new benefits. Organizations can
quickly scale up to evolve new
projects in the cloud, then if
desired, move them on-premises.
Likewise, companies have the
flexibility to keep copies, or
clones, of on-premises projects
in the cloud, as backups for
disaster-recovery purposes.
“Now clients can manage and
bridge to modern data platforms,”
Bührer says. “If you have an
image that’s configured, you
are able to export it and take it
wherever you want—in a different
data center, a client’s cloud
environment, or even a different
cloud provider if you want to
migrate to the cloud and deploy
applications there.”
This approach also allows
organizations to store their data in
the location that makes the most

sense, she says. “You can have
your crown jewels running in your
private data center, but you could
also leverage third-party cloud
providers for the ‘less best’ data. Or
if you want to try something out for
experimenting, you have options.”

just for the end customers, but
also for the entire ecosystem.”

much innovation is coming out
from the best and brightest that
the only way to keep up is to tap
into the open-source community,”
Bryan adds.
Accelerating Pace
Because the pace of innovation
is accelerating due to clients
demanding faster cycle times,
the entire software development
process has sped up. No single
company can fund that level
of acceleration, so it must be
done within a collaborative,
open-source framework—and
that’s true for every industry,
according to Chari.
Collaboration requires
data, spurring the rise of big
data, analytics and business
intelligence. The data universe
used to be composed of only
transactional structured data.
Today, it includes unstructured
data, graphics, video and more.
For example, the healthcare
industry uses digitized forms
and images. That unstructured
data needs to be integrated
with structured data and then
run through analytics to derive
business value, Chari explains.
To gain insights from the data,
OSDBs such as Apache Hadoop
and Spark were developed. “Now

there’s real-time analytics so you
are analyzing the data as it is
being generated,” he says.
The ultimate beneficiary of the
accelerated pace of innovation is
the customer, says Chari. “With
more people working on it, there’s
a higher probability that you’ll
have something disruptive that
will change the market and bring
value to a large number of people.”
Welcoming Attitude
Early on, IBM saw the benefits of
the open-source revolution and
has been championing Linux for
years. IBM has participated in
open-source initiatives as well as
leading them, giving momentum
to open-source activity.
The OpenPOWER Foundation
has opened up the Power Systems
architecture, which ramps up
innovation by using the collective
wisdom of the crowd, Chari
says. OpenPOWER is working to
address the need to accelerate
computing to keep up with the
volume of data being produced.
“By opening up the architecture
and allowing people to be
innovative, IBM has come up with
some interesting products such as
NVIDIA accelerators working with
POWER*,” he explains.
Bryan concurs. “The
newest and most innovative
applications are growing out
of the open-source community,
which IBM actively participates
and nurtures,” he says. With the
introduction of POWER8*, IBM
opened the POWER architecture to
allow the processor and hardware
to experience the same innovation
and speed that’s happening in
the software community. “With
OpenPOWER architecture,
clients have choice, speed and
innovation, just like you have
with open-source software,”
Bryan says.

software package could be used
to yield relationship data. In a
matter of seconds, you could
identify someone and determine
if that person is of interest.
Another example is an
application developed by
MongoDB that associates mapping
information with locations. The
software, which is already being
used in Scandinavia and the
U.K., tracks publicly available
bicycles that can be rented with
special tokens. The app lets you
see if bikes are stocked near a
subway exit and how many will
be available at a specific time
of day. “When I was in the U.K.
on business, I would build into
my time schedule whether I was
walking or biking to the next
appointment,” Bryan says.
These applications, built
around open-source software,
are very demanding in terms
of data usage, which suits the
capabilities of the POWER
architecture. New applications like
the aforementioned bike example
are helping improve quality of life.
“I’m seeing amazing applications
that people are building because
they can take the latest open-source
applications, bring them together
and use each of the applications for
its strengths,” Bryan says.
Competitive Advantage

Some companies, like those in
pharmaceuticals, are spurring
innovation through the adoption
of a venture capital model, says
Chari. A company will fund
innovation by offering a set prize,
say $1 million, to solve a tough
problem. This kind of approach
generates lots of ideas from lots
of people outside the company.
“Usually one of those ideas is
something that’s truly disruptive
and solves the problem,” he
says. That idea then becomes
the intellectual property of the
sponsoring company.
These companies want the
open-source community to thrive,
but they also seek an adjacent
technology that nobody else has
that solves a unique problem.
“That becomes your competitive
advantage compared to the other
companies in the open-source
market,” Chari notes. “Proprietary
will always be there but it will
coexist with the bigger scale that
is afforded by open source.”
Pushing Technology
and Business Forward
In the next few years, open
source likely will be driven by
the need for real-time processing
solutions, according to Chari.
Open-source software will evolve
to provide standardization,
which will then cause proprietary
applications to be created. “But
right now, if you can’t collaborate,
you are limited by what you do
and that limits what you can do,”
he says.
The wisdom of many is
generating applications that are
pushing technology and business
forward. IBM will continue to
support open-source innovation—
and developers will continue to
turn ideas into reality that will
benefit us all.

toe-in-the-water approach by
many IT shops. They want to
take advantage of Linux, but
doing so requires them to step
out of their comfort zone. And
additional challenges arise
when using Linux on the more
efficient Power Systems plat-
form. “It takes a significantly
higher level of benefit to justify
a complete change of system
platforms than to stay with
the platform you are on,” says
Myers. “If you are on a total x86
infrastructure, it may be per-
ceived as disruptive to change
to something different, even
if there are significant perfor-
mance benefits.”

One of the challenges for IBM
is educating clients about
the Linux capabilities of the
Power Systems platform. Spe-
cifically, POWER8 and POWER9
servers are capable of providing
better price performance and

els, Myers explains.

whichever Army base she was stationed at, I corrected her grammar and sent
her letters back. Today, her letters to me are few and far between—and really short.
She’s afraid to write to me, even though I’ve changed from the cocky preteen armed
with a red pen.
Still, I’m a word girl. I always have been. Numbers aren’t my thing. So, as I was examining
investment options, I knew I couldn’t come up with a solution on my own. After searching
online, I found a directory of financial planners with offices within an hour’s drive of my
rural Minnesota home. After reading through their profiles and offerings, I found one
that suited my needs.
My other option would have been to search and try to compare them manually. The
directory took the guesswork out of my quest.

language, Forstie says. If you are using IBM i, SQL can be
executed in every interface into the system, he notes. Tools
such as the SQL Query Engine can assist in reducing workload

P ublic, private or hybrid, cloud is a business essential. Cloud
delivery strategies let businesses modernize as well as

The IBM Power Systems* platform is an excellent choice
for users who wish to accelerate their cloud deployment and
reduce costs, says a 2017 study by Enterprise Management
Associates (EMA). Thanks to IBM’s latest offerings in hardware,
cloud delivery and software, as well as its support services and
products, Power Systems is “equally attractive to prospects
seeking open, powerful cloud alternatives to x86 servers and
chip architectures,” notes EMA. (See “Power Systems Is Your

In 2017, IBM unveiled two new enterprise-class, cloud-ready
offerings designed to host mission-critical and data-intensive
workloads. IBM Power Systems Enterprise Cloud, or C-models,
are optimized to yield seamless cloud delivery, availability,
yiÝLÌÞ]ÃiVÕÀÌÞ>`VÌÀ°
`iÃ>ÃÃÃÌViÌÃ included moving thousands of dev/test servers to the cloud and
lowering costs, thanks to the lightning-fast processing power of
the POWER8* chip and lower per-core licensing costs.
The LC models are scale-out servers that allow clients to
build and deliver cloud-native analysis and data services using
the Linux* OS. Clients can boost processing power by adding
servers as demand increases.
To help clients get their cloud deployments operational, IBM
is partnering with cloud-management tool and open-source
vendors. Clients can tap into the 250 OpenPOWER members,
more than 2,500 Linux ISVs that are creating cloud applications
vÀ*ÜiÀ-ÞÃÌiÃ>`ÛiÀÎäÀiviÀiViVw}ÕÀ>ÌÃvÀ
solutions. In addition, Power Systems clients can choose from
over 100,000 open-source packages that run on the platform.
Creating a Cloud Strategy
Organizations need to create a cloud strategy before
plunging into any cloud deployment, says Julie Schuneman,
Distinguished Engineer and senior cloud advisor, IBM. (See “An

Smaller organizations need to designate a cloud champion who
can guide the company through setting goals and measuring
achievements.

The study also found that high-achieving organizations
decided upfront which business and IT functions could move to

adopting cloud.
The study looked at a banking client that wanted to boost
innovation. The bank’s developers were stymied by long waits
for server reboots and provisioning. The bank worked with IBM’s
Cloud Infrastructure as a Service to develop a solution that
enabling self-service provisioning. Once the hybrid cloud was
deployed, developers reduced innovation time from months
to about one week, in some cases. The bank saved millions of
dollars.
Using a Managed Service Provider for Cloud
-iÀ}>â>ÌÃ]>Þw`ÌÀiiVV>ÌÕÃi>
managed service provider (MSP). For some companies, a hybrid
arrangement where some workloads stay on-premises and
others go to the MSP works well, says Laura DiDio, principal,

It makes sense to choose an MSP that has a level of expertise
in a company’s vertical market. Companies must ask MSPs
questions about security, compliance and response times

Preparation Is Vital to
Crafting an HA/DR Plan
C -suite executives know that high availability (HA) and
disaster recovery (DR) are two key requirements for their IT
systems. In some industries, such as banking, legal compliance
policies to guide DR and the creation of governance rules.
2. Determine requirements. This includes looking at the risks
to the company, the recovery time objective, the recovery
issues dictate HA and DR requirements. As executives often point objective and assessing your company’s capabilities to
assume that HA and DR structures are in place, it’s best for them address threats.

businesses, have many options to ensure their HA/DR programs
are robust. Money-saving options include cloud-hosted HA
and subscription-based software offerings and DR as a Service
(DRaaS). DRaaS involves renting a partition from a managed
service provider (MSP), which the customer uses to host the DR
replicate data. The MSP lends a hand with setup, monitoring,
backups, role swap testing and other necessary tasks.
Not Just Storms
When it comes to HA/DR, most IT shops think in terms of natural
disasters. While Mother Nature can wreak havoc, other threats
can be just as disruptive to operations, says Peter Laz, managing
consultant at Forsythe Solutions Group Inc. These include local
power outages, a squirrel chewing through wires, human error
or a cyberattack. (See “Expert Recommends a 5-Step Process

No matter the cause of the disruption, the methods for
handling it remain the same. First, establish a corporate crisis
management team (CMT). The CMT has “the responsibility to
direct and/or manage the full lifecycle of any event that could
impact business for an acceptable period of time,” Laz says. The
CMT will call on subject matter experts, depending on the type
of disaster.
Effective communication is important when handling DR
situations. Giving an accurate description of the problem will be
helpful when communicating with outside entities, Laz says.

Once an option has been chosen, the company will want to
create an implementation roadmap.
4. Implement capability. This step centers on creating a
implementation plan and should include validating the
process.
5. Govern the program. The chosen DR plan is put into place.
The company also needs to run validation exercises to
ensure the DR capabilities work. This is also the stage at
which compliance and risk reporting is implemented.
Any DR plan must be reviewed and revised regularly. Plan and
program maturity will determine how often such a review must
occur. Plans likely will go through several versions before all of
the glitches have been addressed. “Program maturing is also a
factor because the higher-quality programs have operationalized
the business continuity and disaster recovery environment;
reviews and updates to the plan are built into the daily operation
of the business,” he says.
Real Stories
DR processes are necessary and can even help companies
save money. Laz notes that a full-service bank implemented
a multitiered recovery program that included virtualization
consolidation. The bank saved $600,000 over three years.
Hurricane Sandy in 2012 convinced Chilewich Sultan LLC,
a designer and manufacturer of high-end woven goods, to
revamp its DR situation. The company worked with Maxava to
develop a streamlined DR solution that involved the installation
of Power Systems* hardware as well as moving some data to the
cloud. HA was part of the company’s revamp and resulted in real-

Being in the credit card processing business, we are audited continually. So, we study
the industry and Payment Card Industry (PCI) security mandates constantly.
You see dramatic news items that overshadow other important alerts. Earlier this
year, the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) mandated that all merchants,
even the smallest, are now required to complete and submit a Self-Assessment
Questionnaire (SAQ) and Attestation of Compliance (AOC).

So what?
Previously, those at “Merchant Level 4,” the lowest volume, were not required to.
These small merchants do less than a million total transactions and fewer than 20,000
ďḱŽŶĞŽŽ Ă Ž Ŷ e-commerce transactions per year. You may be one.

Not heard of this?
The people with whom you contract for card processing are banks. The PCI enforces
through the card brands (e.g., Visa, MasterCard, American Express, etc.) and the
only contract they have with the merchant is through the merchant account that the
acquiring bank has signed with the merchant. While banks/acquirers are interested in
security, they are ill-equipped to enforce PCI mandates.
What is the task?
As of Jan. 31, 2017, a merchant accepting credit cards is absolutely required to
complete an SAQ. If you touch the credit cards with your workstations and servers
in any way—regardless of storage—you must complete the SAQ “D”. This 500-plus
question interrogation into your processes, systems and security can take months to
complete. It is accompanied by implementation of dictated policies and procedures.

What is the risk?

Even though your bank may not have demanded it, ignorance is no excuse if you
suffer a breach. So, as great as you think your security is, without the submitted SAQ
and an AOC signed by an officer of the company, you’re patently in violation of PCI
requirements. This exposes a company to huge fines, lawsuits and re-issuance costs
for the card numbers stolen.
We present this to alert you not just to the mandate that you likely have not yet been
required to fulfill but also to the ever-increasing requirements from the PCI. If you touch
credit card data, or even employ remote tokenization technology, make sure someone
in your organization is tasked to monitor the PCI mandates. Better yet, find a trusted

S ystems management is an ongoing function for every IT shop.
New tools are being developed to assist administrators in
performing assessments and oversight. Adding cloud to the mix
increases organizations’ monitoring needs.
Recognizing that, IBM developed IBM Cloud Management
Console (CMC) for IBM Power Systems*. CMC gives IT admins the
ability to monitor off-premises, on-premises and cloud systems
from a single platform. This centralized view can be accessed from
anywhere, including mobile devices, allowing IT to see what’s
happening anytime, anywhere. (See “Anytime Management,”
bit.ly/2yMLcxI.)
CMC aggregates data from multiple HMCs to provide a view
of the entire enterprise, including hybrid cloud and data centers
spread out geographically. As a Software as a Service (SaaS)
offering, CMC is hosted on IBM Cloud. Users don’t have any
software to install or additional infrastructure to maintain, notes
Jennifer Monk Lin, former senior offering manager, IBM Power
Systems. “You don’t have to worry about software maintenance and
that, in turn, reduces operating expenses,” she says. Further, the
SaaS model means IBM and its development team can add features
and value as soon as they are ready.
Current CMC apps include performance, inventory and logging
information. The performance app monitors performance, including
systems, shared storage pools and partitions. This enables admins
ÌÃiiÕÌâ>ÌÌÀi`Ã>`ÌÀ`>Ì>ViÌiÀivwViVÞ°/i
app also provides energy usage metrics. It looks at network usage
so that admins can identify an application that’s using a lot of
bandwidth. With that information, admins can take action, such as
upgrading a card on the hardware from 1GB to 10GB, Lin notes.
With the inventory app, it’s simple to monitor the status and
health of all of the Power Systems infrastructure resources. The app
ÃÀÌÃ>`wÌiÀÃÌivÀ>Ì>`V>LiVÕÃÌâi`ÌÃÜÞ
those resources that are a priority.
CMC’s logging app gives users a view of PowerVM* virtualization
actions, including Remote Restart, Partition Lifecycle and live
partition mobility.

Moving to the latest hardware can often solve system issues and
trim expenses. The latest hardware can reduce maintenance issues.
Newer machines tend to use less power and cooling, cutting outlays

issues, Lynch says.
In reviewing an organization’s system, IT should document the

determine if improvements must be made, Lynch says. Performance
can be affected by card placement in the server slots, and any
assessment should look at that, too.
Tunables are another area to be reviewed. Admins should ensure
that tunable guidelines are up to date, she says. Be sure to consider
the size of the enterprise’s network when looking at tunables.
Finally, IT must assess its I/O and CPU needs. Advancements in
CPU over the past few years yield better, faster performance, Lynch
says. Using virtual I/O servers can help organizations keep up with
security and performance patches.
Do a VM Inventory
Virtual machines (VMs) are a popular remedy for server sprawl, but
they, too, must be managed. Virtualization allows many VMs to
reside on a single server, and it’s easy to create VMs with a click of a
button. As a result, organizations have trimmed hardware costs by
employing VMs.
Wise organizations will perform an ongoing assessment of VMs,
including how many exist and how much they are used. Such
reviews are recommended on a monthly or quarterly occurrence.
The company can then cull VMs that aren’t being used. This will
do much to keep systems in check and
eliminate waste.
