Seuss (Theodor Seuss

Geisel, 1904-1991) pseudonimul literar al lui
Theodor Seuss Geisel (inspirat de numele de fată
al mamei sale, o imigrantă germană în Statele
unite ale Americii), caricaturist, autor şi ilustrator
de cărţi pentru copii american, s-a născu la 2
martie 1904 în Springfield, Massachusetts unde
tatăl său a fost un timp curatorul unei grădini
zoologice. Absolvind Dartmouth College şi după
o scurtă perioadă petrecută în Anglia în
încercarea - ratată în ciuda particulei Dr.
autoironic ataşată pseudonimului său - de a
obţine titlul de doctor în literatură la Oxford, se
căsătoreşte şi se întoarce în America, unde
colaborează la cunoscute reviste umoristice cu
articole şi caricaturi, faima fiindu-i stabilită însă
de o reclamă foarte populară. În timpul celui de-
al doilea război mondial, după înrolare, îşi
exercită talentul în grupul de oameni de film care,
sub conducerea lui Frank Capra, a turnat
documentare şi pelicule pentru armată şi s-a făcut
remarcat, cucerind cîteva premii importante
(Academy Award for Best Documentary, 1948).
Primele cărţi - în versuri - pentru copii (And to
Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, 1937,
The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, 1938,
The King's Stilts 1939, Horton Hatches the Egg,
1940), dar şi cîteva pentru adulţi ( The Seven
Lady Godivas 1939) apar în perioada interbelică.
Au urmat şi alte volume, dar succesul major a
venit odată cu The Cat in the Hat, care a
revoluţionat cartea pentru copii, reprezentînd şi

un stabil succes comercial. După ce petrece cîţiva
ani la Hollywood, în 1948 se stabileşte în
California, unde va rămîne pînă cînd se va stinge
din viaţă la 24 septembrie 1991. But for two years,
1941-1943, he was the chief editorial cartoonist for
the New York newspaper PM (1940-1948), and for
that journal he drew over 400 editorial cartoons.
Prima sa carte de succes, The Cat in the
Hat, a fost scrisă folosind un vocabular
simplificat (un maxim de 220 de cuvinte) cu
scopul expres de a fi folosită de / pentru copiii
americani în procesul de învăţare a limbii
materne cu dorinţa de a înlocui manualele
plictisitoare. I-au urmat alte cărţi, între care
Green Eggs and Ham a stabilit un record,
folosind doar 50 de cuvinte, păstrînd totuşi
versificaţia şi genul de rime cu care îşi obişnuise
cititorii, mizînd în acelaşi timp mult pe structuri
simplificate şi repetiţie.
Metrul caracteristic - un tetrametru
anapestic (patru măsuri de cîte trei silabe, dintre
care primele două neaccentuate şi a treia
accentuată) - mult utilizat şi în poezia engleză
romantică, de exemplu, este folosit ca metru de
bază, alternativ cu trohei şi iambi, această variaţie
dînd culoare şi vivacitate versurilor şi făcîndu-le
uşor de memorat şi plăcut de recitat - dar şi
aproape imposibil de tradus; dificultatea
traducerii mai este sporită şi de prezenţa
frecventă a rimei interioare, a aliteraţiilor şi a
cuvintelor sau numelor proprii inventate ( de
exemplu Grinch din The Cat in the Hat sau Yertle

the Turtle sau Lorax sau the Oobleck), a căror
sonoritate face deliciul scrierilor sale. Succesul
acestora se datorează în plus faptului că lasă frîu
liber fanteziei, fiind scutite de orice intenţie
moralizatoare, în ciuda faptului că nu sînt lipsite
de o concluzie educativă sau folositoare.
Datorită talentului său de grafician -
evidenţiat şi în caricaturile pe teme politice
apărute în timpul războiului - Dr. Seuss este şi
ilustratorul multora dintre propriile volume,
manifestîndu-şi în acest spaţiu tendinţă pentru
caricatură, preferinţa pentru animale sau
maşinării stilizate, dar şi pentru liniile curbe -
indicate ca linii de bază şi în studiourile Disney
în aceeaşi perioadă. A mai scris şi alte cărţi -
majoritatea pentru copii, sub pseudonimul Theo.
