Putting It All Together

What is happening for children at this developmental age in


our district
Physical
Physical Education once per day for a semester
with a highly qualified teacher
Health Education for all students, including sexual education
Nash Parks and Recreation/Rocky Mount City Parks and Recreation
- low fees for play
- character building
- competition is becoming a main driving force
All grades 9-12 are allowed to try out for school sports
JROTC is available to grades 9-12

Cognitive
Enjoy technology and real world experience learning
- Agricultural education classes are being taught at feeder high school
- Power allows students to attend Carpentry Club and Welding Club
- All high schools have CTE classes
- Multiple schools have MakerSpace labs
Band/Music/Art participation required of all students and encouraged for others

Self Concept, Identify, Motivation


- Peer approval is at all time high
- Students form cliques and groups
- Mask pain and emotional distress

Peer Relations/Moral Development


- Opinions are independently formed and validated through experience
- Begin to rebel against parents
- Peer opinion is more valuable than adult opinion
- Engaging in sexual behavior

Language and Literacy Development


-Appreciate humor and use sarcasm freely
- Self Motivation appears to wax and wane
- Slang/text speech is prevalent
-Students use social media to communicate frequently
-Students use nonalphabetical dialogue- emojiis, SnapChat
What is needed/missing from our district to support our kids
needs.
1. ​Physical
Allow for increased physical requirements
-Swim/Calisthetics/Yoga
Allow for flexible seating, in all settings
Increased education about health habits and how to live a healthy lifestyle
Increased discussions about sexual activities and dangers of opiod addiction

2. ​Cognitive
More interactive learning experiences
- Allow students to work creatively with technology
- Coding
- App Creation
- Website design
Teaching the developmental skills, both academic and social, for those that are in need
- Students are coming to high school with serious deficits that are not being
addressed
Financial literacy skills need to be taught to address the process of paying for higher ed

3. ​Self Concept, Identify, Motivation


Restorative justice practices could serve to emotionally grow students and prevent
recurring instances of discipline infractions
Providing peer role models and leadership positions for students within school
Teen court would be effective in handling issues that children are most sensitive to
Create clubs and group experiences to bring children into the fold

4. ​Peer Relations/Moral Development


Social media course needs to be implemented for students and parents to teach proper
online behavior
Professional development for teachers to identify warning signs and be proactive to
prevent online abuses.
Professional development on the protocols and procedures for school safety.

5. ​Language and Literacy Development


Teaching the developmental skills, both academic and social, for those that are in need

Financial literacy skills continued to continue the process of paying for higher ed
Currently using Power, Key Club, DECA, National Honor Society, and Sports to provide
enrichment for students
Conclusion
As with all comprehensive, full scale evaluations, we realize that success in one

particular area can come at the expense of another. At NRMPS we strive to educate the

whole child and allow them to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally. In order to

develop our students fully, we need to provide leadership opportunities for our students

within our schools. Additionally, we need to work to develop programs to meet the 21st

century needs of our students to be safe practitioners of social media and online

resources. This full scale, whole child approach to education will serve our students well

in high school and beyond.
