What role does basic technological research play in the product development
process? How would you modify Exhibit 2-3 to better represent the research
and technology development activities in product development?

Following are the few roles technological research play in the product
development:

 First of all it tells you which technology is being used in the market.

 It will give you a ‘benchmark’ for the technology to be used in your product.
You will be aware of what technology competitors are using and what
technology you need to stay in competition.

 It will give you an idea of what skills are required for the use of technology.
This will help you hire the right people for the use of technology. A machine
will be useless if you don’t know how to use it.

 It will give you an idea where market is moving in the use of technology and
what sort of research and development you will need in the future for your
product.

 It will also give you idea to identify your target market on the basis of
technology you will be using will be using in your product.
