GPONDoctor advanced features

PON Check

The GPONDoctor Analysers now support the following features:

• Downstream frame edition

• Controlled fragmentation of one OMCI channel
• Controlled fragmentation of one user data GEM channel

To support these features additional hardware modules have been

developed, and the system now supports two modes of operation:

• Normal mode (same characteristics and usage than previous versions).

• PON Check mode (support for downstream frame edition and controlled
fragmentation features. Previous “normal” features are also supported in
this mode).

Each mode of operation requires a specific external splitter module, which

must be connected as shown:

Do not forget to use required

OLT attenuators to keep optical power
PON interface within the sensitivity&saturation
limits on all interfaces.

The difference between the Normal and Test modes is mainly in the
downstream signal path and the way it is generated.

When should I use Normal mode or PON Check mode?

• Normal mode can be used in any scenario where PON Check advanced
features are not required.
• PON Check mode must be used when advanced features are required.
• Normal mode can be used when GPON Doctor is connected to any external
OLT or OLT emulator.
• PON Check mode cannot be used when an OLT is using downstream FEC
and/or encryption (except for the downstream FEC errors injection feature).

To change between Normal and PON Check modes:

• Default mode after the system is powered up is Normal mode.
• To enable PON Check mode:
1. Make the appropriate connections using the PON Check mode
external splitter module.
2. Open the GPON Analyzer application (AppGPON).
3. Select the OLT Control tools in the OLT menu.

4. Activate the OLT Emulator Advanced Functions checkbox and press

Accept.

• To return to Normal mode:

1. Make the appropriate connections using the Normal mode external
splitter module.
2. In the GPON Analyzer application select the OLT Control tools in the
OLT menu.

Configuration of the OLT emulator GEM fragmentation advanced function:

1. In the GPON Analyzer application select the GEM fragmentation
Configuration tool in the OLT menu.

2. Activate the checkboxes associated with the GEM ports you want the
controlled fragmentation to be applied to: User Data GEM port, OMCI
GEM port, or both.

3. Enter the desired values: GEM Port-Id and Maximum GEM Payload Size
and click on Accept.

Interleaving checkbox:

• When deselected, all the GEM fragments that encapsulate a User Data
packet will be sent consecutively before sending GEM fragments that
encapsulate an OMCI packet.

• When selected, the first GEM fragment that encapsulate one User Data
packet will be sent. Then, all the GEM fragments that encapsulate an
OMCI packet will be sent. Finally, the other GEM fragments that
encapsulate the User Data packet will be sent. This process will be
repeated per User Data packet.

CRC32 Errors:

• Errors can be inserted in the CRC32 field of the OMCI messages or User
Data frames of any of the two GEM ports selected for controlled
fragmentation.

• When the CRC32 Errors checkbox is unselected, a good CRC value is

transmitted.

• When the CRC32 Errors checkbox is selected, an errored CRC value is

transmitted.

HEC Errors:

• Errors can be inserted in the HEC field of the GEM frames of any of the
two GEM ports selected for controlled fragmentation.

• First, activate the HEC Errors checkbox.

• Second, configure the number of bit errors in the BCH Code part of the
HEC field (up to seven errored bits can be inserted).

• Third, select the Parity Error checkbox to invert the Parity bit of the HEC
field. Leave this checkbox unselected if Parity bit inversion is not desired.

function:
1. In the GPON Analyzer application select the Downstream Frame Editor
tool in the OLT menu.

2. For GTC Header edition, activate the Enable PCBd Edition checkbox.
3. Activate the checkboxes associated with the fields you want to edit.
4. Enter the desired values (HEX format) and click on Accept.

Some notes related to PCBd edition:

a) For PLOAMd CRC, BIP, Plend1 CRC, Plend2 CRC and BWMap CRC:
• When the associated checkbox is unselected, a good CRC value is
transmitted.
• When the associated checkbox is selected, the value configured by
the user is transmitted.
b) Regarding BWMap edition, just one Alloc-ID can be selected and edited at
the same time. All the BWMap allocations for this Alloc-ID will be modified
according to the user configuration, and the allocations of the other Alloc-
IDs will be unmodified.

5. For FEC errors injection, activate the Enable FEC Errors checkbox.
6. Enter the desired values to configure the error pattern and click on Accept.

Description of the parameters to configure the FEC error pattern:
• Byte Offset: it represents the offset within each FEC codeword. Possible
values from 0 to 254.
• Number of Altered Bytes: number of errored bytes within each codeword
from the selected offset. Possible values from 1 to 255.
• Error Mask (binary): to configure the bits that will be inverted within each
errored byte. To invert a bit, set the associated mask bit to 1. To leave it as
it is, set the associated mask bit to 0.
• Number of Altered Codewords: number of codewords within the
downstream GTC frame that will be transmitted with errors. Possible
values from 1 to 153. If the user selects N codewords, the codewords with
errors will be from codeword#1 to codeword#N.
NOTE: controlled GEM fragmentation and PCBd edition are not compatible
with FEC errors injection, so these features can not be used
simultaneously.

Follow the next steps to smoothly switch from an scenario without FEC to an
scenario with FEC when you are in Test mode:
1. Select the Enable FEC Errors checkbox with Error Mask equal to 00000000
2. Activate the use of downstream FEC in the OLT emulator (fec CLI
command)
3. Configure the FEC error pattern as desired

Follow the next steps to smoothly switch from an scenario with FEC to an
scenario without FEC when you are in Test mode:
1. Set Error Mask to 00000000
2. Deactivate the use of downstream FEC in the OLT emulator (no fec CLI
command)
3. Unselect the Enable FEC Errors checkbox

When in PON Check mode, GPONDoctor Analyzer can capture the unedited or
the user edited downstream signal. To select the desired option:
1. In the GPON Analyzer application select the Configure Capture Advanced
Options option in the Capture menu.
