It was a case of déjà vu for some council members
as the Animal Control Bylaw once again landed on
the town’s agenda with a request to prompt a new,
Page 17 more inclusive regulation that demonstrates mod-
ern standards and practices.
The bylaw raised some concerns in 2014, when a
local family asked to allow their Vietnamese pot-bel-
lied pig, Chuckles, within town limits to ease their
daughter’s night terrors.
Following much debate about a solution best
suited for the Town of Strathmore, the bylaw was
amended with special conditions attached to allow
for Chuckles – who by then was a registered emo-

mal Registry (NSAR) – to return home. However, the
Animal Control Bylaw still prohibits the use of fowl,
bovine, equine, poultry and porcine as pets.
These restrictions resulted in Strathmore resident
Paul Sonsteby appealing to council on March 7 for
the sanction of owning miniature pigs as pets with-
in the town.
“I grew up on a farm in a household with lots of
pets, dogs and cats, and I married a woman who

strict regulations on miniature pigs,” Son-
steby said. “The AMPA actually has a long
list of regulations they need potential own-
ers to meet. It’s not just a case of you pay
your deposit and you’re getting these ani-

Strathmore pastor receives prestigious honour

On Saturday, Lord of All Lutheran
Church Pastor Dawn Nelson became
the province’s first chaplain to receive
the Alberta Emergency Service Medal
during the Wheatland County Volunteer
Firefighters Appreciation and Awards
Dinner.
PD, as she is commonly known, was
among 46 recipients who received the
award for 12 years dedication to or sup-
porting the emergency services.
Wheatland County had never pre-
sented these awards previously.
“She’s a phenomenal person to bring
peace and mental wellness to our crew,
and it is really important to emergen-
cy service personnel to have someone
who’s a sounding board, a chaplain …
and she just comes by it naturally,” said
Mac de Beaudrap, regional deputy fire
chief for Wheatland County.
“We’ve never presented these awards
in Wheatland County before, although
people were entitled to them. We de-
cided that now is the time, let’s catch
up on the backlog of people who are
very deserving and need this recogni-
tion. We put forward all their names
and got them all approved.”
PD grew up in Calgary as one of
three children and attended church on
special occasions such as Easter and
Christmas. She then pursued a nine-
year nursing career in the Pediatric In-
tensive Care Unit at Foothills Medical
Centre, which she credits for her fond-
ness of emergency workers. After near-
ly a decade in the nursing profession,
PD knew she was destined for some-
thing else and became the Lutheran
Church youth minister for all of West-
ern Canada for a year. When it was time
to return to nursing, she turned instead
to becoming a pastor full time. The op-

role at the Strathmore Lord of All Lu-
theran Church, which at the time was
housed in a doublewide trailer.
The job required her to dedicate up
to 25 per cent of her time to commu-
nity service; one of the reasons she was
drawn to the position. She spent her
days reading books to children during
story hour at the Strathmore Municipal
Library, served on the Youth Club of
Strathmore board, played a vital role in
the creation of Strathmore Victims Ser-
vices, helped in the beginning phases
of the Strathmore Overnight Shelter,
and is marginally involved with the
Wheatland and Area Hospice Society.
For the past 12 years, PD also served
as the chaplain to members of the
Strathmore Fire Department, eight fire
departments in Wheatland County, and
for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
under K-Division. On occasion she also
makes herself available to Emergency
Medical Services (EMS).
“I tend to try to make sure that I’m in
the places where my skills, my abilities
and my resources can be best used, and
I guess I just go where I see a need and
that changes from time to time,” said
PD. “I don’t do it as a Lutheran pas-

tor, I do it as someone who’s concerned
for my community and overall wellbe-
ing. I’ve been here so long, so I’m more
known in that regards, but this is where
my heart is.”
According to PD, her role as chaplain
has no religion attached and is much
more open-ended. She addresses the
whole spiritual picture, helping people
deal with anything in life from strug-
gles to celebrations. She is also trained
in critical incident debriefing.
On March 10, PD was taken by sur-
prise when she received the provincial
award, presented to her by Strathmore-
Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt, and a
certificate signed by Alberta Premier
Rachel Notley and Minister of Munici-
pal Affairs Shaye Anderson.
“It’s very humbling to be acknowl-
edged for doing it. I don’t do this for
the publicity or awards, I do it because
I think it’s what I’m called to do,” she
said. “In a world where so often faith
gets hidden away or put to the side,
there needs to be some recognition for
chaplains. We’re not just people in the
box of the church, and so for me this
was not just about me, but about all the
other chaplains out there, and there are
many.”

March 24 each year is World TB day. Although there
are less than 2000 diagnosed cases in Canada each
year, the disease is an epidemic in many areas of the
world, often just a plane ride away. In 2015, 10.4
million people were diagnosed with TB and 1.8 million
died worldwide. TB affects the lungs with symptoms
including coughing longer than 3 weeks, chest pain
with breathing, weight-loss, fatigue, fever, night sweats
and appetite loss. There are antibiotics available to treat
the disease successfully but often not available in third
word countries.
The third week of March also highlights National
Poison Prevention Week to raise awareness of the
dangers of poisons in the home and to educate
consumers and caregivers on how to prevent
poisonings. Many children are being looked after by
grandparents who often take many medications. Safe
storage of these medications is important. Another
potential poisonous item is those little pillows of
dishwasher and laundry soaps. They can be attractive
to kids and MUST be kept out of reach.
Those who use pressurized inhalers to help their
breathing may not be getting the full benefit from the
device. Some have problems timing the activation of
the inhaler to breathing the medication in and end up
with much of it in the mouth or the back of the throat.
If this is you, talk to your pharmacist about a valved
holding chamber that helps coordinate the activation
of the inhaler with the inhalation of the medication
efficiently to get more into the lungs where it does the
most good.
Vitamin E is said to be good for many things but
Alzheimer’s isn’t one of them. It has no effect on the
disease. Exercise and healthy diet work better.

New committee formed to promote tourism

Strathmore Town Council approved the creation
of a new Tourism Development Committee with a
mandate to expand Strathmore’s tourism industry,
during the March 7 regular council meeting.
Membership on the committee will include a
candidate appointed by Siksika Nation on how to
advance tourism in and between the two commu-
nities.
“Bringing people to our community to see the
natural environment, to see historic features, near-
by lakes … all of that is really tied intrinsically
to the First Nations and their relationship with
the land,” said Ryan Roycroft, assistant director
of infrastructure and development service for the
Town of Strathmore. “Administration and council
are really excited to see this committee take shape
over the next month.”
According to Roycroft, there are many possibili-
ties for the two communities to work together go-
ing forward. One area the town could really bene-
fit from is Siksika’s access to government funding.
The Tourism Development Committee will rep-
resent the town and Siksika’s first foray into a
joint venture specifically focused on tourism. A
member of Siksika wasn’t originally planned to be
on the committee during its initial concept.
“We noticed we were missing Siksika Nation as
a partner and wanted to invite them to partici-

6, to give council an awareness of a movement in
the county to establish a four-bed palliative care
unit, which would provide a facility to help local
residents and their families, allowing a dignified
atmosphere for end stage care.
“Our goals are basically to provide services and
programs for people who are dying, as well as
support for family members, and to provide hos-
pice and palliative beds in the Wheatland area,”
said McNeeley.
However, she said this care doesn’t need to be
confined to a facility. It can take place in hospi-
tals, homes, age care facilities and in the hospice.
An important component is also providing emo-
tional, psychological and spiritual services.
“Actually, the definition of palliative care is
changing to hospice care that takes care of the
patient but also the needs of the family, friends
and community,” said McNeeley.
She said patients do better, are more comfort-
able and have more dignity in hospice environ-
ments. It is also cheaper than hospital housing.
The Canada Health Act does not include home
care as an essential service. It is left to regional
and local level governments to fund additional
hospice facilities. Alberta Health Services (AHS)
will build no new beds in this region. The current
ones are designated to service the Calgary area,
with the main facility in Okotoks with 121 beds.
However, AHS recognizes this does not meet the
need of rural patients. It is working with WAHS
to brainstorm how the community can build a
four-bed facility and cover operating funds in the
future.
The building costs are between $3 million and
$6 million. AHS will provide half the annual $1
million operating costs.
Roundtable discussions have taken place in
many area hamlets and villages. McNeeley said
there is a good volunteer base and coordination
of resources needed for palliative care here. She
would like to look at palliative care as a public
health movement.
Wheatland County council proclaimed National
Palliative Care Week May 5-12, and WAHS will be
holding some fundraising events during that time.
The first annual Hike for Hospice will be held at
Kinsmen Lake on May 6; and a Cheadle Lions fun-
draiser will be held at the Strathmore Civic Centre
on May 13.

Along with a Siksika Nation representative, the
committee will be made up of seven members.
A Strathmore town councillor will serve, as will
someone from the Strathmore and District Cham-
ber of Commerce (SDCC) to bring the business
perspective and complete the loop of communica-
tion back to the business community.
“We’re always more than happy to work with the
town and get involved in tourism because tourism
and business work hand in hand,” said Lawrence
Carriere, executive director of SDCC. “Whatever
areas we can help out and bring the town’s busi-
ness community viewpoint to is perfect.”
According to a report submitted to council, the
final four positions will be filled by applicants
with experience in hospitality, entertainment, and
government or private sector tourism and market-
ing backgrounds.
Originally the membership for the final four
positions was going to be restricted to business
owners but Roycroft wanted those restrictions re-
moved to allow for employees to be hired. One
reason was that employees can have a similar ex-
perience on the front lines and business owners
can face time issues.
Once members have been chosen, the commit-
tee will officially be formed in the second quarter
of 2018.

Monitoring air quality

Wheatland County has recently seen the need
for monitoring air quality in dealing with compost
facilities and particulates coming from other sites.
The county asked for help from the Calgary
Region Airshed Zone (CRAZ) to indicate if there
were harmful particulate levels in the air. Howev-
er, the current monitoring could not formally and
conclusively ascertain the exact particulate origin
with current monitoring equipment and financing.
Jill Bloor, CRAZ executive director, appeared be-
fore Wheatland County council on May 6 to em-
phasize the need to monitor air environments and
to deliver an update on what the organization is
doing. She said CRAZ is grassroots formed with a
volunteer board, embracing 40 municipalities and
an air zone that affects 1.4 million people.
“If people don’t know what it means (air quality
index) … we don’t change anything,” said Bloor.
According to Bloor, combustions and industrial
manufacturing contribute to particulate concen-
trations and can have major health repercussions,
such as respiratory illnesses. CRAZ has developed
a good working relationship with some of the ma-
jor industries in the zone concerning industrial
outputs, and they have also worked with Alberta
Health Services regarding last year’s wildfires, de-
veloping the Simplified Wildfire Smoke Guide.
Bloor said the organization reviews and gives
input to the government on air quality issues in
the region, and provides educational programs for
groups and schools. She said education is the big-
gest factor in changing attitudes and behaviours,
and they have teaching plans available for teach-
ers with interesting experiments like the dirty
sock challenge.
Bloor said CRAZ is looking for board members
and suggested Wheatland County consider having
a member on the board to increase their input to
the organization.

Like the famous Warner Brothers cartoon char-
acter Elmer Fudd, farmers will be preparing to
deal with 2018 gopher infestations.
The gophers – Richardson’s ground squirrels –
create havoc to farm fields and public parks, cre-
ating up to 30 holes per month. They eat roots
and buried wires and piping. They have ticks and
fleas, and some can carry viruses. However, they
are also a part of the food chain and supply high-
er animals with needed food.
Under the province’s Agricultural Pests Act, go-
phers are classified as a nuisance, which means
they are to be controlled but not eradicated. In
the past, federal animal cruelty bills listed gophers
as wildlife and may have eliminated many control
methods used had those bills passed.
Some residents in Wheatland County have seen
the gophers peek their heads aboveground re-
cently, however with this amount of snow, resi-
dents might have time to consider control ideas.
Most farmers use strychnine as effective rodent
control, which needs to be handled with care.
However, control by other means may not control
widespread infestations.
Wheatland County has two per cent liquid
strychnine for sale at 10 per cent plus cost, or the

EASTERN BRIDGE REPAIR NEEDED
Some residents near Hussar might be impacted
by a closure of Bridge 11 that connects the east-
ern population of Wheatland County along Hwy
9 and 10 to Drumheller. Many of those residents
go to Drumheller for shopping and medical ap-

Strychnine is a toxic chemical and employed
through treated grain put down the holes, prior
to birthing season in April. The dead carcasses
have to be incinerated and buried in 18-inch-deep
holes to protect wildlife and domestic animals.
Protected species such as the swift fox and bur-
rowing owls will use old gopher holes as homes,
so if they are on the property, strychnine should
not be used.
The City of Calgary uses chemical smoke bombs
fired down the tunnels for gopher control.
Often farmers will shoot gophers, but care with
neighbouring farm animals needs to be taken to
prevent people and stock injuries. Some farmers
say gophers don’t like areas where the ground
cover is left uncut as they can’t see distances,
which may be a good reason not to mow.

Local speakers show skills, gain confidence

Young and talented speakers from
various 4-H clubs within Wheatland
County gathered on March 10 at the
Strathmore Civic Centre for the Wheat-
land District 4-H Speak-offs, where
they delivered speeches and presenta-
tions at the second level of the public
speaking competition.
This advanced opportunity allowed
each 4-H club’s top two speakers in
each level – junior, intermediate and
senior – to recite their speeches or
presentations to a new set of judges
alongside other advanced speechmak-
ers from different clubs.
All 4-H members are required to
participate in at least one communica-
tions activity every year, usually a for-
mal prepared speech or a presentation.
However, some senior members may
instead opt to emcee an event or host a
workshop in lieu of presenting a formal
speech.
“(Public speaking) is an important
skill to have no matter what your career
is,” said Grace Heuver, Grade 11 stu-
dent and senior member of the Cheadle
4-H club. “It’s a good thing to have for
anything in your life – just to be able to
talk to people is important. I think that
in the long run it will pay off, it’s even
paying off now just in school presenta-
tions.”

seven different 4-H clubs in the district.
Topics included learning how to make
DIY weather instruments; how to grow
the best beans; the essentials of trav-
elling to Australia; driving in the new
age; and the fight for women’s equality,
among many other topics.
At the end of the competition, each
speaker was able to take home a set of
judges’ notes to potentially give them
hints and tips to help them in the fu-
ture.

4-H aims, among many other things,
to prepare members for real world situ-
ations through involving them in prac-
tical life lessons targeted at teaching
members responsibility and confidence.
Members learn this through running
their own meetings with minutes, finan-
cial reports and upcoming event plan-
ning, through participating in a yearly
public speaking event and through put-
ting together a final project – whether
that be showing an animal they have
taken care of, or putting together a me-
dia presentation such as photography
or crocheting.
Researching, writing and delivering a
speech or presentation helps 4-H mem-
bers gain valuable life skills that will
benefit them in the future, such as in
job or school interviews, meetings or
work presentations. It is also benefi-
cial to help the members learn how to
stand up and speak in front of a crowd
and even just to hold a conversation
with another person.
“I think it’s incredible because when
I was nine, and first started 4-H, I was
a super shy kid. My first public speak-
ing event I cried because I was so ner-
vous about it,” said Heuver. “Consider-
ing how far I’ve come in my confidence
level and my ability to do this is sur-
prising to me. I definitely think it’s su-
per important for a lot of people to do
this because I know I never would have
gotten this far without 4-H and I prob-

Rosebud woman shares hope

Jaala Cutbill of Rosebud spent two weeks in Ki-
gali, Rwanda in February, bringing love to women
affected by genocides and poverty.
Cutbill was with the Hearts of Hope team, un-
der HOPEthiopia/Rwanda. The team included
six Canadian women, an American woman and
a Rwandan woman, who went to nurture rela-
tionships with women in HOPEthiopia/Rwanda’s
year-long tailoring program.
According to Glenda Dubienski, HOPEthiopia/
Rwanda’s director of operations, most women
in the tailoring program are orphaned genocide
survivors, and have so little education they’re
deemed unemployable. Many were raped, she
added, and forced into prostitution, giving birth
before their mid-teens. “Their prospects are slim.”
Cutbill and the team spent the first week visit-
ing the 20 women, aged 16 to late 20s, about to
begin the program. Most of their homes, she said,
are “very tiny” and “very poor.
“We would just spend an hour and a half, two
hours with them,” Cutbill said. “We were there to
introduce ourselves, have them introduce them-
selves to us, and spend a bit of time welcoming
them to the Hope family, and just share some
blessing.”
The Hearts of Hope team shared Bible verses,
encouragement, affirmation and prayer. They’d
also hear their host tell stories about her own life.
The following week, the Hearts of Hope team
took those 20 women on a day trip to Lake Mu-
hazi. It was their first time meeting each other,
and for most their first time outside Kigali. “We
had a big buffet lunch down by the water, and
the girls just got a chance to play and be free,”
said Cutbill.
Then the team focused on the 20 women who
entered the program last year and were graduat-
ing. They organized a graduation ceremony and
took the graduates to Akajira Park, a wildlife re-
serve, giving many their first chance to see wild-
life.
Cutbill believes the greatest difference they
made was “listening, just hearing their stories,
and acknowledging and validating what they
went through. Feeling heard and feeling loved; I
think they’re so alone that knowing that people
actually care was probably a big deal.”
Cutbill quoted Dubienski: “We go to love on
these women. And our model of therapy is rela-
tional.”

At the age of seven, owner of the Ul-
mer School of Irish Dancing, Jan Ulmer,
would share part of her Irish culture by
visiting senior homes and performing
traditional Irish dances.
Now as an adult, the custom continues
as her students will be visiting AgeCare
Sagewood and Wheatland Lodge on
March 16 to showcase their talent and
Irish tradition in time for Saint Patrick’s
Day.
While the school has performed at
the senior facilities for the past several
years, this year seniors are in for a treat
as the group will be showing off some
of their youngest dancers to date, rang-
ing from age four to 13 years old.
“I pursue it because I grew up danc-
ing in senior homes and I know how
much they love it and it’s important for
us to give back to the community,” said
Ulmer.
“It’s an exciting time for them. It’s get-
ting them away from the competition
aspect and allowing them to have fun
and be free and show off their skills and
everything they’ve learned. One of our
favourite places to go is a senior home.
I know how much the seniors love it,
it’s an important day for them and we’ve
been there before; I know they really
look forward to having the dancers
back.”

The Ulmer School of Irish Dancing
was established in 2006 in Okotoks and
opened a facility in Langdon in 2014.
Since then the non-profit dance school
has grown to 29 dancers from an origi-
nal six participants, offering recreational
as well as competitive classes. It recent-
ly turned out its very first championship
dancer from the Langdon branch.
The students, who come from Lang-
don, Strathmore, Chestermere and the
surrounding area, have been practic-
ing their Ceili, soft shoe and hard shoe
dances in preparation for upcoming
performances.
Strathmore’s 13-year-old Alysha Young
saw an ad for the Ulmer School of Irish
Dancing on social media years ago and
attended a meet-and-greet. She fell in
love with the dance and performed for
Strathmore’s seniors with the school
previously.
“I like seeing their reactions at the
end, they really like it when we come
and do these things,” Young said. “It’s
mostly Christmas time that they get per-
formances so for Saint Patrick’s Day it’s
really special for them. “
The Ulmer School of Irish Dance will
be performing at AgeCare Sagewood
and Wheatland Lodge on March 16. The
senior dancers, aged 13 to 17, will also
be participating on Saint Patrick’s Day,
Saturday, March 17, at Murdoch’s Bar
and Grill in Calgary with performances
at 6:30 and 8 p.m.

Locals take aim at Allan Cup

Lord Stanley’s mug dwarfs all other
hockey trophies that try to measure up
to its greatness, longevity and relevance
across Canada.
The Allan Cup is the only other tro-
phy of significance that can hold a can-
dle to the Stanley Cup, as it too carries
an encyclopedic history and deep roots
in our great nation.
The Allan Cup was donated by Sir H.
Montagu Allan in 1909 to the Victoria
Hockey Club of Montreal and was to be
given to the amateur hockey champion
of the Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey
Union, which ended up being the Ot-
tawa Cliffsides.
One week later, the Intercollegiate
league champion Queen’s University
Golden Gaels challenged the Cliffsides
to a one-game playoff and won, taking
over as Allan Cup champions.
Since then, the Cup ironed out its
playoff format from a challenge to a
nationally represented tournament, as
the groups responsible for the trophy
changed hands as well, all while build-
ing up a rich hockey history. The trophy
is handed out yearly to the best senior
AAA hockey team.
Two local hockey players are looking
to get their hands on this iconic piece
of hardware one more time.
Keenan Desmet, a local boy who
starred with the UFA Bisons before go-
ing on to an established Junior A career,
college career and one year as a pro
in Europe, who is also known around
town as an assistant coach to the Strath-
more Wheatland Kings, won the Allan
Cup for the 2012-13 season with the
then Bentley Generals.
The Generals have played in eight Al-
lan Cup finals, winning three of them,
and now go by the Lacombe Generals.
“It’s the highest level of hockey for a
guy like me in Western Canada. We play
with a lot of guys who played pro but
have since moved on to get jobs and
now have families,” said Desmet, who
makes the two-hour drive mid-week for
practices and hops in the team van for
games on the weekend.
“It’s a huge commitment and I’ve had
a lot of support from my family and
friends. But for me, it’s all about play-
ing with that competitiveness again. I
still love the game. Everyone we play
with or against has the same competi-
tiveness and we all want to be winners.
To say that you’re a national champion
is something special that not a lot of
people get the chance to do.”
Desmet isn’t the only Strathmore
product to don the navy and gold of the
Generals. He skates alongside 31-year-
old Brett Robertson, who has won a
pair of Allan Cups with the Generals.
In 19 games this season with the Gen-
erals, Robertson notched seven goals
and 21 points, while Desmet found the
back of the net once and chipped in
seven assists in eight games.
Keenan isn’t even the only Desmet to
have played in the past. Both his broth-
ers, Braden and Taggart, played for
the Generals in years past, along with
the dozens of locals who have made
the trek to the Gary Moe Auto Group
Sportsplex Arena in the past.
Joining Desmet and Robertson on
those long carpooling rides are a pair
of Strathmore coaches in their rookie
seasons behind the bench.
Brett Thurston played for the Gener-
als for six years and won the Allan Cup
three times (2009, 2013 and 2016) and
is looking for his first ring with his new
role.

ning games,” said Thurston. “I still have
the fire and passion to be out there. It’s
fun to be out there with the guys trying
to win a national championship.”
The other bench boss is Devin Olson,
who enjoyed a 12-year tenure pulling
the strings in the Wheatland Athletic
Association.
“I always knew the hockey was good.
We have two former NHLers on our
team (Brennan Evans and Evan Oberg).
They offered me a job to help out and I
couldn’t say no,” said Olson, who turns
36 this spring. “The main reason you
put up with the long hours spent on
the road and late nights driving back
is to have a chance to compete for the
national championship. To win that
would be at the top of my coaching list
for sure.”
Standing in front of the Generals (18-
4-0-2) and their 12th appearance to the
Allan Cup are the Stony Plain Eagles
(12-11-0-1). The puck dropped in Game
1 of this best-of-seven final March 9 in
Lacombe and saw the hometown skate
to a 4-2 lead. The following night in
Stony Plain, the Eagles battled back
from a 3-1 deficit to clip the Generals
4-3 in overtime. Game 3 goes March 16
in Lacombe with Game 4 going the fol-
lowing evening in Stony Plain.
In six regular season meetings be-
tween the Eagles and Generals, the
Generals had the upper hand, going
4-2 and outscoring the Eagles 22-13.
“Stony will be a good team. We did
all right against them in the regular
season, but the regular season is a dif-
ferent animal,” said Thurston. “A lot of
guys miss games with injuries, work
and family stuff, but they always seem
to find a way to make it to the rink
come playoff time. So, we can’t really
base anything we learned from them in
the regular season.”
The winner will advance to Rose-
town, Sask. where representatives from
Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and Alberta will con-
verge April 9 to 14 at the SaskCan Cen-
tre to determine a new champion.
Of course, if the Generals struggle
with the Eagles in the ACHW final, they
will have a great chance at hoisting the
Allan Cup next year, seeing as Lacombe
is set to host the 2019 championship.

Spartans come up short in Zone final

Not even a freak ice storm caused by
rapid snow melt with sudden gusts of
wind could slow down the No. 4 ranked
team in the province.
The 3A South Central Zone senior
girls basketball title changed hands
March 10 when the Brooks Compos-
ite High School Buffalos knocked off
the host Strathmore High School (SHS)
Spartans at the SHS gym.
Originally, the final was slated for
the evening of March 9, when a larger
student body would have been pres-
ent, but a wind storm swept in and
made the highway between Brooks and
Strathmore unsafe.
When the ball finally tipped, the Buf-
falos showed why they have been a
dominating force all season. They didn’t
blitz the Spartans, but used a steady of-
fence and stifling defence to constrict
the Spartans for four quarters until the
horn sounded on their 60-46 victory.
“Brooks did this afternoon what they
did all weekend; they only went on one
little run, but won each quarter by four
or five, and by the time you look up
in the fourth quarter, they are leading
by 20,” said Spartans Head Coach Kyle
Larson.
Playing her final game of her high
school career, Allie Davidson came out
in front of a lively crowd and buried six
of her team-high 22 points in the first
quarter, as the Spartans trailed 13-10 af-
ter the first 10 minutes.
At times this season, scoring has
dried up for the Spartans in stretches.
For whatever reason – whether it’s
shots not falling or defences cramping
down – the well has been known to dry
up at times and it did again in the sec-
ond quarter.
Turnovers, and the Spartans going
0-for-6 as a team from the land beyond
in the second quarter, allowed the Buf-
falos to expand their lead to 28-17 at
half time.
On defence, the Spartans tried to
deny the Buffalos’ low-post combo of
Rachel Harvey and Brittney Rhodes
the ball by trapping them and double-
teaming them at times with Natalie
Funk and Kristen Whelan, but the Buf-
falo bigs found ways to utilize shooters
elsewhere, as Reagan Zottl chipped in
five points in the quarter.
Coming out of the locker room after
half time, Davidson and fellow senior
Kaylin Larson came out firing.
Kaylin came out and drilled a three,
the Spartans first of the game. The next
few trips down the floor she dotted Da-
vidson with a backdoor feed, drew a
foul and stroked another three, as she
was gunning it in her final game.
“My seniors were definitely our lead-
ers all year,” said coach Larson. “Kay
and Allie went down battling today. I
couldn’t have asked for much more out
of those two.”
The Spartans hung with the Buffalos
in the third, tying them 16-16, but still
wound up trailing them 44-33.
In the fourth, the Buffalos pulled into
the fast lane and were never seen from
again, when they scored on their first
five trips down the floor, stretching the
lead to 20 at times.
“There were times when we couldn’t
get a shot to go in and we dug our-
selves too big of a hole against a very
strong team,” said Larson. “I’m very
proud of the way we hung in there and
battled to the end.”
Whelan fouled out of her last game,
while Sydney Boyd turned in four
points in her last game with the red,
white and blue.

Hawks senior boys miss zones, girls take bronze

There are a handful of magic words
in sports that can affect the outcome of
games.
When the refs hear them – or a varia-
tion of them – they have been known
to put their mark on the game, right or
wrong, regardless of the stakes.
That’s precisely what happened to
the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Hawks
senior boys basketball team as they
were clawing for an opportunity to at-
tend the 2A South Central Zone tourna-
ment March 7 against the Oilfields High
School Drillers at the HCC gym.
Trailing the zone play-in game by
12 in the fourth, the Hawks took the
lead with seven seconds left when their
leading scorer, Alex Nwoye, canned his
fourth three-pointer of the game to tie
it.
The Drillers called a time out and
fumbled the inbound pass. A few play-
ers scrambled with it and the Hawks
appeared to turn the ball over with less
than a second on the clock.
In the dog pile for the loose ball,
Brandon Middlemiss got fouled. Also
earning a technical foul was Nwoye, as
the refs heard him use an expletive.
“I didn’t hear him say it and Alex
said he didn’t say it,” said Hawks Head
Coach Josh Jalbert. “I’ve known him for
a long time and that’s never been his
style, to lose his cool like that. I’m not
sure what the ref heard.”
Once the dust settled, Middlemiss
walked down to the other end of the
court for his two shots. Missing the
front half, he made good on his second
attempt to go up by one.
Before time could start again, the
Drillers needed to shoot Nwoye’s tech-
nical, which they nailed to force over-
time.
Overtime normally wouldn’t be an is-
sue, but Nwoye was kicked out of the
game after leading the Hawks with 32
points on 11-of-31 shooting.
The Hawks No. 2 option, Landon
Osachuk, was also unavailable in over-
time with an injury.
Without their top two scoring op-
tions, the Hawks were handled in over-
time 14-1, falling 69-56 after the extra
frame.
“It was heart-breaking. The guys took
that loss really hard and it’s a tough way
to see our season end,” said Jalbert. “Es-
pecially for Landon, who finished out
his last high school game.”
As unfortunate as the Hawks were at
the end of regulation, admittedly, Jal-
bert stated that they didn’t take care of
business before then, which led to the
sad ending.
“We had one of our worst shooting
performances of the season,” said Jal-
bert. “I think if we play this game 10
times, we win eight or nine of them.”
The Hawks entered as the sixth-seed
and were taking on the 11th-ranked
Drillers. Despite the mismatch, the
Hawks only shot 24.1 per cent from the
floor, 18.8 per cent from downtown and
66.7 per cent from the charity stripe.
They were 2-0 against the Drillers this
season in the Foothills Athletic Council.

81-53.
Leading the way was Hope Given,
who turned into a monster, recording
39 points in the bronze medal match.
Angeline Palardy rode shotgun and reg-
istered 17 points.
The Hawks opened the tourney with
a close 59-51 loss to the St. Joseph’s
Collegiate school.
“It was an excellent way to finish out
the season,” said Hawks Head Coach
Joe Lepage. “The team played strong
defensively, moved the ball from out-
side to insideat will and maintained a
positive attitude and supported one an-
other.”

Chaos volleyball to hold fundrasier this spring

The local Strathmore volley-
ball program is gearing up for
another run at a national title
and is looking for some support
from the community.
The Strathmore Chaos Volley-
ball Club now houses U14, U15,
U16 and U17 programs. The club
is looking for new ways to bring
in money to help take them to
the proper tournaments that will
slot them into the proper divi-
sion to allow them to face the
best competition on a national
and provincial level.
The U17 Chaos just finished
with their second premier tour-
nament last weekend at Rally
Pointe in Calgary. After two
days of competition, the Chaos
wrapped up their round robin
1-2 and won their next two play-
off games against No. 1 seeds
before falling in their finale. Any
tournament recognized by Vol-
leyball Alberta will help filter the
70 teams into tiers with compe-
tition most closely aligned with
other teams in the province.
“This year, we are hoping to
be in the second or third divi-
sion,” said U17 Head Coach Vito
Peraino. “Right now, we are in
the fourth division, but we have
a lot of tournaments coming up
that will allow us the chance to
bump up a couple of groups as
the season goes on.”
Last spring, the U17 Chaos
wrapped up nationals at the
Olympic Oval in Calgary fifth
in the third division, which was
home to 32 teams.
The next opportunity for the
U17 crew to make a leap in
the provincial standings is this
weekend, when they join a su-
per series tournament in Kelow-
na, B.C.
Travelling B.C. and Alberta is
all part of the process, which
includes the premier No. 3 tour-
ney Easter weekend in Edmon-
ton.
Of course, all roads eventually
lead to the provincial tourna-
ment at the end of April, with
nationals on the May long week-
end.
“I feel like we have a good
team here,” said Peraino. “We
need to figure out a way to win
the early morning games and we
should be ranked higher than
where we are now.”
As a way to raise money for
the travel the Chaos teams will
embark on this spring, the vol-
leyball program is holding a me-
dium hearing by Jennie Ogilvie,
as a way for people to hear from
friends or relatives that are no
longer around.
“Jennie held an event in town
earlier in the year and it pro-
duced great results,” said Cha-
os fundraiser manager Karen
O’Keefe. “We are hearing a lot
of excitement for the event and
we are really looking forward to
what she is able to produce.”
The reading is set for May 26,
from 7-9 p.m. at Legends Bar
and Grill.
“We have the lowest league
fees out of any of the surround-
ing Calgary-area teams,” said
Peraino. “The Airdrie program
is nearly three times the cost of
our program. We do a lot with
what we have, but a little help
would absolutely help out the
program in several ways.”
In the meantime, the vol-
leyball programs will continue
their bottle drives and other
small fundraising efforts while
they try to ascend the provincial
rankings.

On this occasion, extra friends were
required to bring home the Southern
Alberta Mixed Curling championship.
The local rink of Scott Garnett, Ja-
son and Heather Wilson, and Katie
Crump positioned themselves in the
B final, when disaster struck.
Team skip Garnett got a call the eve-
ning of March 3 and learned the area
sales manager for his home building
company suddenly passed away and
somebody needed to cover the sales
centre during the grand opening of
their first show home in the Calgary
area.
Mixed teams of four cannot com-
pete with three players. Either one
guy or girl has to take the lead, and
then the genders alternate the rest of
the way through the lineup.
So, Garnett called an old friend.
Matt McDonald was in St. Albert
coaching the Henry Wise Wood
Warriors curling club at the Alberta

is a great curler,” said Garnett. “We are
very lucky he was able to make the
long drive to help us out.”
The makeshift Garnett rink was tak-
ing on the B. Ness rink and jumped
on them early, by scoring one point
in the first end and then stealing
three more in the second end, riding
the early momentum to a 7-1 victory
and earning a spot at the provincial
championships March 29 to April 1 in
Beaumont.
“It was a pretty crazy weekend. It
wasn’t a tournament we had planned
to enter for a long time, it kind of just
happened, and then with all the stuff
that happened between Saturday and
Sunday, it just made for a crazy week-
end,” said Garnett.
Making things a little sweeter was
how tight-knit Garnett’s rink was.
All calling the Strathmore Curling
Club home – with the exception of
McDonald – they all know each oth-
er through years of curling. For one,
Heather is Jason’s mother and Crump
is Jason’s aunt. Garnett used to coach
Jason six years ago.
“Jason throws as good as anyone
who I’ve curled with. So, with his
mom as the lead and Katie as the
third, to keep everyone in their roles,
Matt took Jason’s old spot as second
and Jason threw last stone for us,”
In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still,
in our hearts you hold a place that no one could ever fill.
Our thanks to the Rockyford Fire Department, Emer-
gency Medical personnel and STARS, and the doctors,
nurses, and care team at the Foothills Hospital that
are helping John with his recovery.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 24,
2018 at Rockyford Community Hall at 1:30 p.m.

May 10, 1961 - March 8, 2018
Todd passed away on March 8, 2018,
He leaves behind his wife Chris of 20
years, daughter Amber, parents Robert
and Donna, sister Brenda (Jim), nieces
Marayd (Matt) Tarryn, brother Terry (Sammie), neph-
ew Chase. Todd was born and raised in Calgary. He
graduated from SAIT in 1981 for drafting. He worked
at Coca-Cola for 15 years, leaving in 2000 due to MS.
He loved classic cars, Coke, chocolate, traveling, and
had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be dearly
missed by all. I would like to thank Strathmore Dis-
trict Hospital, EMS, the Handi-bus, and Sagewood for
all the years of looking after Todd. Donations in Todd’s
memory may be made directly to the charity of your
choice. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March
16, 2018 at Lord Of All Lutheran Church (112 Lake-
side Blvd, Strathmore) at 1:00 p.m. with lunch to fol-
