Gardens and to jazz, singer-songwriters and zarzuelas. And
that’s just where music is concerned. If you feel like an
exhibition, you should see what PhotoEspaña has to offer,
get inspired by a pioneering classic like Turner, travel to
Quattroccento Florence with Ghirlandaio, or to the extraor-
dinary world of Federico Fellini. Need a little breeze to cool
down? Nothing beats a stroll through Casa de Campo Park
or a bird’s eye view of the century-old Gran Vía. These are
just some of the many proposals you can find in this edition
of our magazine. All you need to do is pick the flavour that

 Como viene siendo habitual, grandes es-
trellas del panorama nacional e internacio-
nal brillarán con luz propia en las noches
de verano. Las baladas románticas con sa-
bor andaluz de Manuel Carrasco inunda-
rán el día 1 de julio el Escenario de la Puer-
ta del Ángel, en la Casa de Campo, que se
volverá flamenco con el arte y el duende
de Miguel Poveda (día 2) y mediterráneo
y sensual gracias a Noa y Dorantes (día
3). Son ellos quienes marcarán los prime-
ros compases de una programación que
cuenta con la presencia de Jeff Tweedy,
grandes conciertos unmissable concerts
Year after year, national and international
stars come to Madrid to light up the sum-
mer nights. On July 1, Manuel Carrasco
will fill the Puerta del Ángel stage in Casa
de Campo with the sweet flavour of his
romantic ballads brought to us from An-
dalucía. On July 2, Miguel Poveda will
bring his incomparable art and talent to
this unique venue, transforming it into an
genuine flamenco party, while Noa and
Dorantes will flood it with their Medi-
terranean and sensual music on July 3.
These artists will kick off this popular sum-
mer event which will welcome other big
names such as Jeff Tweedy, band leader
Elvis Costello

emblemática de Madrid se pondrá en
escena La Gran Vía (del 1 al 16 de julio,
mar-sáb, 22:00 h), de Federico Chueca y
Joaquín Valverde, que narra los orígenes
de la calle. Los amantes del género chico
también podrán disfrutar con otra obra, La
del manojo de rosas (del 25 de julio al 4
de agosto), sainete lírico en dos actos con
música de Pablo Sorozábal.

For the first time in the history of the tradi-
tional Veranos de la Villa festival, zarzuela,
or Spanish operetta, will be the guest of
honour at the splendid Sabatini Gardens.
As part of the centenary celebrations Ma-
drid is holding for its most emblematic
avenue, the capital will be staging Federico
Chueca and Joaquín Valverde’s famous
zarzuela La GranVía (from July 1 to 16,
Tues-Sat, 10 pm), a piece which illustrates
the history of the thoroughfare. Lovers of
Spanish operetta can also look forward to
La del manojo de rosas (from July 25 to
August 4), a two-act lyrical sainete (farce)
with music by Pablo Sorozábal.

dés Celtic Legends, que sorprenderá al
público con un espectáculo de música y
baile tradicionales llenos de emoción y
color (del 18 al 22 de julio). También muy
especial será la Gala Roland Petit, con
la participación de Lucía Lacarra, Uliana
Lopatkina y Eleonora Abbagnato (6 y 7 de
agosto). Una invitación a viajar a través de
la obra y las muy diversas fuentes de inspi-
ración de Petit, un coreógrafo que no deja
de fascinar por la juventud, modernidad y
originalidad de sus ballets.

lore dance company Celtic Legends will
surprise the audience with a spectacular
show packed with emotions and colour
(from July 18 to 22). On August 6 and 7,
enjoy the perfect opportunity to let your-
self be seduced by the work of Petit, a
choreographer who draws inspiration from
several sources and who always leaves
his audience in a state of pure rapture
with the youth, modernity and freshness
of his ballets. The event Gala Roland Petit

The Sabatini Gardens will be decked out
in style to welcome one of the best piano
players in the world, Chucho Valdés
(July 5, 10 pm), who will be accompa-
nied by a sensational band that creates
a perfect blend of jazz and Cuban music.
This panoramic venue, which boasts the
Royal Palace in the background, is the
perfect setting to experience the hair-
raising performances of Fado artists Car-
los do Carmo (August 9) and Camané
and María Lavalle (August 16), who will
be bringing this Portuguese art form to
the Spanish capital.

The summer evenings of Veranos de la Villa
will also be filled with traditional flamenco art.
Prominent Cádiz-born singer José Mercé
(August 10, 10 pm) will have the honour of
opening the flamenco show Sabatini Fla-
menco (from 18 €), held in the stunning gar-
dens. He will be followed by other renowned
artists such as Enrique Morente (August
13) and José Menese (August 19), and fla-
menco dancers Eva Yerbabuena (August
15) and Farruquito (August 21).

Orquesta West-Eastern Divan. Mucha
atención porque el acceso al recinto se
realizará a partir de las 19:30 h (entrada
gratuita). Las sexta y séptima sinfonía de
Beethoven serán las piezas que interprete
esta orquesta creada por el propio maestro
y compuesta por jóvenes músicos árabes,
israelíes y españoles, que trabajan sobre
tres principios básicos: el entendimiento,
la concordia y el diálogo.

Make sure you write this date down in
your calendar: August 5. At 10 pm, Dan-
iel Barenboim will return to Plaza Mayor
at the head of the West-Eastern Di-
van Orchestra, who will be performing
Beethoven’s Sixth and Seventh Sympho-
nies. Try to get there early as doors open
from 7.30 pm and entry is free. This or-
chestra, which was created by Barenboim
himself, is composed of young Arab, Is-
raeli and Spanish musicians and is based
on three basic principles: understanding,
harmony and communication.

From July 6 to 27, the Plaza de Oriente
is offering you a different way of enjoying
the sunset as various international and
Spanish groups fill the capital with polo-
naises, arias, music for cello and baroque
guitars. More ethnic sounds will be the
order of the day at the Templo de Debod
from July 20 to 24. Music ensembles will
come from as far as Rajasthan, Kalahari
and the Ivory Coast to take you on a jour-
ney to magical places (9 pm).

pasado año parte de sus instalaciones fue-
ron ocupadas por el Hotel Ada Palace que,
en su sexta planta, ofrece una terraza con
unas impresionantes vistas, con la cúpula
del edificio Metrópolis en primer plano. Un
buen lugar para tomar un aperitivo, probar
sus tapas y tostas o, si ya está entrada la

Gran Peña, one of the oldest buildings
on Gran Vía, rises up at the beginning
of the street. Since 1914, the edifice has
served as a home for the gentleman’s club
of the same name which is composed of
aristocrats and military men. In September
last year, the sixth floor welcomed a new
tenant, the Hotel Ada Palace. Step out
onto its terrace boasting a stunning view,
with the dome of the Metrópolis Building
in the foreground, and enjoy an aperitif ac-

The silver top mountains looming over the
fields of Castille is part of the visual land-
scape immortalised by the Madrid based
photographer. This exhibition is the result
of images captured during three different
sessions. The first two were conducted
with an analog camera, and the third with
a digital one.

Martin Parr has managed to capture the
most grotesque and extravagant side of
luxury. This British photographer uses the
images, which he started taking with the
onset of the current global economic crisis,
to criticise society’s value system. 35
 Fiestas del Orgullo Gay gay pride party
En Madrid, el verano comienza el Día Internacional
del Orgullo Gay, que en este 2010 se celebra el 3
de julio. Los días previos las calles del barrio de
Chueca se cubren de banderolas y guirnaldas, y
los bares de la zona instalan sus barras al aire libre,
mientras que las plazas acogen música en directo,
aunque este año los escenarios principales estarán
en Callao, plaza de España y la plaza de Soledad
Torres Acosta. Las fiestas, que tendrán este año
como pregoneros a los actores Imanol Arias y Ana
Milán, se prolongan durante la semana y alcanzan
su apogeo el sábado, cuando el desfile por la
visibilidad LGTB (lesbianas, gays, transexuales y
bisexuales) reúne a miles de personas de todo el
mundo. En esta ocasión el lema es Por la igualdad
transexual y recorrerá la centenaria Gran Vía hasta
la plaza de España, donde actuará la cantante
australiana Kylie Minogue.

En el marco de las fiestas, como es habitual, se

celebra, del 1 al 4 de julio, la Infinita Gay Week,
festival que promete tres noches de música y baile
hasta la madrugada –días 1, 2 y 3 en las salas
Heineken, Macumba y Madrid Arena–, además
de un apoteósico final coronado por una sesión
especial de Space of Sound a partir del mediodía
del domingo 4 (Sala Macumba).

Hasta el 18 de julio, el Festival Visible, que celebra

su sexta edición, exhibirá la diversidad de la cultura
LGTB en diferentes escenarios de la ciudad a través
de exposiciones, performances, teatro, danza y
cine, con la proyección de películas como La playa
de los perros destrozados –6 de julio, 20:00 h, en
la Sala Manuel de Falla de la SGAE–, con Nieve de
Medina y Vladimir Cruz.

One can almost say that International Gay Pride Day,
which will be held on July 3 this year, marks the onset
of summer here in Madrid. The entire Chueca district
is lined with flags and garlands in anticipation of this
big event. Open-air bars flood this avant-garde area
and live music performances are held on many of the
city’s squares, although the main stages for the vast
array of events will be in Callao, Plaza de España and
Plaza de Soledad Torres. Renowned actors Imanol
Arias and Ana Milán have the honour of inaugurating
this year’s festivities which will continue throughout
the week and will climax on Saturday, with the Gay
Pride Parade organised by the LGBT (lesbians, gays,
bisexuals and transsexuals) community. This inter-
nationally acclaimed parade attracts thousands of
people from all over the world, and this year the slogan
will be For transsexual equality. Together they will
cover the length of the 100-year-old Gran Vía avenue
and finish in Plaza de España, where Australian singer
Kylie Minogue will perform.

The Puerta del Ángel stage in the Casa de
Campo is one of the main venues for the
Veranos de la Villa festival, and this gives you
the perfect excuse to explore the enormous
green lung of the city. A place packed with
fun things to do, only 10 minutes away from
the city centre.

Antes de adentrarse en la Casa de Campo
merece la pena conocer un poco más la
historia de este lugar que, con sus más de
1.722 hectáreas, es el parque más grande
de Madrid. Felipe II lo compró en 1562 por
150.000 maravedíes y desde entonces se
convirtió en el coto de caza favorito de los
monarcas. Fue declarado Bosque Real en
1746 y en 1931 pasó a ser público. Existen
muchas posibles rutas senderistas por la
zona pero ya que estamos descubriendo
su pasado lo mejor será acercarse has-
ta el puente de la Culebra, en la zona
conocida como El Zarzón, en el extremo
suroccidental. Fue construido en 1782
por Sabatini a instancias del rey Carlos III
sobre el arroyo de Meaques. Recibe este
nombre por su forma ondulante.

we’re looking into its past, the best choice
would be to make our way to Puente de
la Culebra (Snake Bridge), which gets its

our city from China, celebrated their first
thousand days in the Madrid Zoo Aquar-
ium. Their names are Bing Xing (Ice Star)
and Hua Zui Ba (Coloured Mouth) and
they are the main attraction in the zoo.
But you can also see lions, elephants,
koalas, dolphins and sharks, which you
can even swim with if you are a profes-
sional scuba diver.

ha conseguido soportar el tiempo a pe-
sar de tener que competir con los más

hay tornados con loopings, una lanzadera
que cae desde casi el mismo cielo a 80
kilómetros por hora, baby-barcas vikin-
gas para los más pequeños, montañas
rusas… y un tiovivo de 1929. La novedad
de este año es la Star Flyer, una silla con
la que los más osados subirán ¡a ochenta
metros de altura!

Every Madrilenian will always have a spe-
cial place in his heart for the Ferris wheel
at the Parque de Atracciones, from which
you can see the entire Casa de Campo
park. The Ferris wheel has withstood the
test of time despite having to compete
with the more sophisticated ‘contrap-
tions’ such as the Tornado, a looping
roller coaster, a shuttle which drops you
from the sky at 80 kilometres per hour,
Viking baby boats for the little ones, mind
blowing roller coasters and a merry-go-
round from 1929. This year’s newest at-
traction is the Star Flyer, where the most
daring thrill seekers can get in a spinning
chair to be shot 80 metres up in the air!

A tall jet of water towers above the artifi-
cial lake in Casa de Campo. The lake is
absolutely enchanting and offers perhaps
one of the most breathtaking sceneries

take it all in while you have a drink on the
terraces or from the lake itself. There are
boats you can rent for 4.55 € and kayaks
as well. However, the use of these kayaks
is exclusively for members of the Alberche
Kayak Club (www.alberchekayak.com),
which gives beginners’ classes for children

moderna, Max Pechstein y Erich Heckel, como
muchos otros artistas de principios del siglo XX,
creían necesario reconciliarse con la Naturaleza.
La playa es el escenario ideal para pactar la paz:
un entorno agradable donde disfrutar del sol. Las
bañistas, desnudas en ambos cuadros, se integran
en el medio plácidamente. Casi no hay ni rastro de la
civilización, sólo un abanico en la obra de Pechstein.
En la de Heckel nada indica si las muchachas han
pasado el día en el mar o si por el contrario llevan
toda la vida en una isla paradisíaca.

the big city and modern-day life and felt a sud-

sol de mediodía y sumergidos en el agua marina,

pero podría ser cualquier día de este verano (ver

them. As we look at the picture of the boys bathed in
the midday sun and immersed in the salty sea water
we have the feeling that they were spontaneously

in Javia, but this exact image could easily be echoed
on the coast this very summer (see previous page).

Picasso illustrates the same subject but his painting

does not mirror reality. Some parts of the swimmer’s
body, such as her arms, can be considered natu-
ralistic but others resemble architectural elements.

Una gran bóveda acristalada, de geome-
tría irregular, cobija los más de 2.400 m²
de este nuevo espacio, elemento esen-
cial de la sede del Ayuntamiento. El lugar
formó parte del entorno del Palacio Real
del Buen Retiro en el siglo XVII y en el XIX
albergó un jardín de recreo. Se incorporó
definitivamente como pasaje y patio de
descarga del Palacio de Comunicaciones
(1904-1919), proyectado por los arquitec-
tos Palacios y Otamendi.
A large glass dome, irregular in shape, serves
as a roof to the over 2,400 m² of this new
space which constitutes an intrinsic com-
ponent of the Madrid City Council’s new
headquarters. It was part of the Retiro Royal
Palace in the 17th century, and in the 19th
century it housed a leisure garden. From
1904 to 1919, it was officially incorporated
as a passageway and loading area for the
64 Palacio de Comunicaciones which was de-
signed by architects Palacios and Otamendi.
