Surveillance Poles To Combat Crime In Downtown Santa Ana

1. “Code Blue” is helpful, valuable and addresses public safety.

2. This article reminds me of the case with Michael S. a man who falsely called “bomb”. This affected safety.

3. The author's purpose is to inform and persuade.

a. help, provide program, help button, safety

4. The audience is people in the U.S. who are concerned about public safety.

a. Simple language that stays away from any specific jargon.

b. Article is written at a low reading level so that it is easily understood.

5. The author uses pathos and ethos. He uses fear of death, and interviews law enforcement.

6. Ethos is more prevalent in the article, though pathos, too, is used.

a. Ethos: “‘It provides evidentiary value if a crime occurs. It's an additional resource for the public, not everyone has cell phones,’
Officer Otto Laufer with the Santa Ana Police Department explained”(Lee).
Ethos: “Six cameras on every pole transmit back to the department operations center where officers can also monitor more than 20
cameras that were also installed around downtown”(Lee).
Pathos: “Laufer helped to get the program online and said part of the push was spurred by the deadly beating of 23-year-old Kim
Pham outside a Santa Ana nightclub in 2014”(Lee).
b. The author uses a lot of ethos to establish credibility, for example he used the interview of a cadet. The cadet knows his stuff. He
also uses pathos because the audience can relate to the subject through commonly held emotions, maybe questioning their opinion on the
addition of surveillance poles in the cities of California.

7. The possible theme for this text is: help others.

● “‘It provides evidentiary value if a crime occurs. It's an additional resource for the public, not everyone has cell phones,’ Officer
Otto Laufer with the Santa Ana Police Department explained”(Lee).
● “Six cameras on every pole transmit back to the department operations center where officers can also monitor more than 20
cameras that were also installed around downtown”(Lee).
● “Laufer helped to get the program online and said part of the push was spurred by the deadly beating of 23-year-old Kim Pham
outside a Santa Ana nightclub in 2014”(Lee).

8. The text helped me understand the positive effects of having surveillance poles installed in cities.

9. An element of the text that I would change would be to include more people who tell their experience and why they think these surveillance
poles are crucial for the safety of the public.
10. Option II
Although many believe that surveillance poles shouldn’t be installed in cities because they may be beneficial for criminals, in a way to
distract the police, the installment of surveillance poles in can be extremely beneficial for the safety of the public. Many people travel or
visit a city for pleasure, these people are known as tourists. Many tourists are foreign, therefore it is a strong probability that they do not
have ownership of a cell phone. Now, what if they had an emergency and had no access to a 911 call. In other words, surveillance poles
are needed by these cell phone-less people. In “Surveillance poles to combat crime in downtown Santa Ana” Greg Lee interviews Officer
Laufer,“‘It provides evidentiary value if a crime occurs. It's an additional resource for the public, not everyone has cell phones,’ Officer
Otto Laufer with the Santa Ana Police Department explained”(Lee). Here Officer Lee states that surveillance poles will have no other
purpose but to better existing problems for the safety of the public. People in these cities, including cell phone-less people, are provided
with attention from the police department at a push of a button. Therefore the installment of surveillance poles should be an addition to
these populated cities.
