Designing a Simply Supported Reinforced

Concrete One Way Slab per ACI Code 318-11
 January 15, 2017  Abdul Siraj, P.E.

In this post, I will go over the third example in our course that covers the analysis and design of
reinforced concrete one-way slabs. The goal of this reinforced concrete design example is to design
a simply supported reinforced concrete one-way slab subjected to dead and live loads per ACI Code
318-11. We will focus our attention on tension-controlled sections
(https://sso.teachable.com/secure/45863/users/sign_up?reset_purchase_session=1).

The problem statement states,

Design a simply-supported one way slab given the following conditions:

Slab Span – 11 ft
Uniform Dead Load (Excluding Self-Weight) – 120 psf
Uniform Live Load – 110 psf
Compressive Strength of Concrete – 3 ksi
Yield Strength of Reinforcement – 60 ksi

The rst step is to nd the total slab thickness, h, with the aid of Table 9.5(a) in ACI Code 318-11. This
table gives guidance on the minimum thickness of nonprestressed beams or one-way slabs. For the
simply supported condition, the table speci es that the thickness must be greater than or equal to
the span length divided by 20. To use this formula properly, the span length must be converted to
inches. Once we’ve derived our slab thickness, we assume the e ective depth is equal to the slab
thickness minus 1. This assumption will need to be con rmed once our design is nalized.

The second step is to calculate the maximum factored moment, Mu, that the slab will experience.

This requires the use of the load combinations from ASCE 7-10 where the factored load, wu, will be
equal to 1.2 times the dead load plus 1.6 times the live load. The dead load consists of the self-
weight of the slab and the dead load excluding self-weight. The self-weight is equal to the slab
thickness in feet times the unit weight of reinforced concrete which we assume to be 150 lbs/ft3.
Since we will only consider a 1 foot width strip of slab for design purposes, the factored load can
be converted from an area load to a linear load. The factored linear load is used to calculate the
maximum factored moment which is equal to the factored load times the slab span length squared
divided by 8. This is based on the maximum moment at the midspan of a simply supported beam.

The third step is to nd the minimum required steel ratio, ρreq, to sustain the factored moment.
Since we know the width of the 1-ft strip and have a preliminary estimate of the e ective depth, the
minimum required steel ratio can be calculated using the following formula assuming a tension-
controlled section,

The minimum required steel area per unit width, As,req is equal to minimum required steel ratio
multiplied by the width and e ective depth. Once this is know, we can now choose the bar type and
number of bars that will serve as the primary reinforcement. The minimum required spacing of the
bars per unit width, Sreq, is equal to 12 times the cross-sectional area of a single bar divided by the
minimum required steel area per unit width. As I mentioned earlier, the e ective depth that was
used in the calculation for the steel ratio was an assumption which must be con rmed. Because the
bar type is known, the actual e ective depth, “d”, is computed as the total depth minus the cover
minus the bar diameter divided by 2. If the actual e ective depth is greater than or equal to the
assumed value, the design is satisfactory. If the actual e ective depth is less than the assumed value,
the design is unsatisfactory.

The fourth step is to nd the steel ratio, ρ, which is equal to the average area of steel divided by the
product of the width and the e ective depth. The width is equal to 12″ because we are analyzing a 1
foot wide strip of the slab. The steel ratio should be greater than or equal to the minimum required
steel ratio per ACI Code 318-11 Section 10.5. The steel ratio should also less than or equal to the
maximum steel ratio for tension-controlled sections. If it satis es both criteria, the strength
reduction factor will be equal to 0.9.

After checking the steel ratios, the depth of Whitney stress block, “a”, and the design moment
strength, ΦMn, are computed using the following formulas,

The sixth step is to specify the secondary/shrinkage reinforcement that are placed perpendicular to
the primary reinforcement. The minimum required steel ratio for secondary reinforcement is equal
to 0.0018 and is based on ACI Code 318-11 Section 7.12.2.1. The minimum required steel area for
secondary reinforcement  is equal to the minimum steel ratio times the width times the total
thickness of the slab. A reinforcement bar type is chose, and the required spacing per 1-ft width is
computed as 12 times the cross-sectional area of a single bar divided by the minimum required steel
area for secondary reinforcement. The spacing of the secondary reinforcement must be in
accordance with ACI Code 318-11 Section 7.12.2.2.

The last step is to check the shear strength of the slab. The design shear strength of the slab, ΦVc,
per ACI Code 318-11 Section 11.2.1.1 is equal to the strength reduction factor times 2 times lambda
times the square root of the compressive strength of the concrete times the width times the
e ective depth. The maximum shear force the slab needs to be designed for, Vu, is equal to the
shear force at a distance equal to the e ective depth away from the slab support per ACI Code 318-
11 Section 11.1.3.1. If the design shear strength is greater than or equal to the maximum shear
force, the design is satisfactory. If the design shear strength is less than the maximum shear force,
the design is unsatisfactory.
