SCADA system: overview

The SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system is an industrial computer-based
control system which gathers and analyse the real-time data to track, monitor and control
industrial equipment's across various industries.
SCADA components are easier to integrate and provides improved capabilities and
functionalities which helps for a faster response in real time processes.
SCADA system has the capacity to support higher-level operational improvement applications
and mostly used for control and automation across various sectors such as electrical power,
water & wastewater, oil & gas, transportation, telecommunication etc.

Evolution of SCADA system:

Emerging cloud-
Third generation: based SCADA
Networked systems limit the
SCADA systems need for hardware
and software
Second generation:

systems Fourth generation: maintenance
Cloud/Internet of
things (IoT) based It enhances reliability
SCADA systems through its multiple
redundant internet
First generation: connections in a
Monolithic or Early

efficient manner

SCADA system application in water and wastewater facilities

SCADA system have applications in both distribution
plants and waste water treatment. In these plants PC
based workstation are located in a control room which
allow operators to view and perform control actions.
In distribution plants, SCADA is used in monitoring
water tank levels, pressure of water system, plant
temperature, sedimentation, filtration, chemical
treatment etc.
The SCADA system also helps in delivering business
system integration, cost effectiveness and system
security in water control systems and plants.

population, from 1.2b in 2015 water sector and introduction of PPP model to
to 1.6b by 2030 reduce the water wastage in the market.

distributed water, highest in water monitoring systems are planned in the
country to check the water shortage and high
the world consumption/losses of water.

Demand & Growth
Drivers - Gujarat
Gujarat, one of the leading states in terms of economic growth &
industrialization, falls under the water-stressed category
Despite having 185 rivers, 5.96% of the total area of the
country and 4.93% of the total population, Gujarat has
only 2.28% of the total surface water resources available
in India.
70% of Gujarat's fresh water resources are located only
in 30% of its geographical area. At present, there is
disparity in water availability across different regions as
South and Central Gujarat has more than 50% of the
total water availability.

Increasing water networks Low quality standards

To counter the dependency of regions 85% of the available water has high
such as Saurashtra and Kutch on rain pollution level
water, the Gujarat government is
expanding the Narmada canal network Of 26 districts in the state, 20 are affected
as work on 5,000km of the 12,000km by salinity, 18 are affected by fluoride, 17
network is under progress are affected by chloride

Water management during Over exploitation of ground

crisis water

In 2016, 65% of the 500 dams and Low surface water availability is
reservoirs are empty due to drought causing the over usage of ground
water
100+ cities in the state receive 92% of the ground water is used in
water for less than 2 hours/day irrigation

Rising focus on the sustainable and effective water technologies due to decrease in per
capita availability of water and deteriorating water quality, presents an attractive business
opportunity for installation of water distribution network monitoring systems

Gujarat - Competitive
Advantage
Ease of Doing Business: Only state which comply 100%
with environmental procedures. Gujarat fares highly when
it comes to setting up a business, allotment of land and “Gujarat ranked
obtaining a construction permit first in ease of
doing business
as
per DIPP report
2015”
Key industries: Gujarat is the leader in key industrial
sectors such as chemical, petrochemical, auto and its
allied sector, pharmaceuticals, engineering, textile,
jewellery etc.
Gujarat has attracted cumulative FDI worth US$12 b
from April 2000 to March 2015
Gujarat clocked the highest growth rate in
pharmaceuticals market at 22.4% surpassing the
industry growth rate of 10.9%
Gujarat contributes around 19.1% to India’s total exports
of goods in 2014-15

Gujarat, with 42.6% of its population residing in the urban

areas, is among the top three urbanized states in the
country

Gujarat is one of the power surplus states in the country,

as a result it helps in bringing huge amount of investment
from the industries and tagged as preferred investment
destination in the country

Skill development industry in the state is well-developed

with many technical institutions (786 ITI’s and
52 Skill upgradation centres)

Incentives
Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB) in their vision BG:2020 facilitate the
government regarding water issues and also to plan the future requirements.
Under the minor irrigation schemes 1/3rd cost of ponds/pump sets is provides by agriculture
department and 2/3rd as loan by NABARD
Government assistance for Saving in Consumption of Energy & Water:
75% cost of energy/water audit conducted in a unit by a recognized institution/consultant
subject to a limit of INR50,000
25% of cost of equipment subject to maximum INR2 mn per project. Only one time assistance
will be eligible during the operative period of the scheme
