Lesson Plan Format:

Teacher_______Ashley Roomsburg________ Grade Level__First Grade___

I. Content and Standards: This lesson will focus on reading and writing time to the
hour.
II. Prerequisites: Students will need a basic understanding of clocks and numbers.
III. Essential Questions: How can numbers tell us more about the world?
IV. Instructional Objective: Given direct instruction as well as time to work with a peer,
students will be able to answer clock questions with 80% or better accuracy.
V. Instructional Procedures: Before instruction, the teacher will prepare all materials
needed for the lesson plan. The teacher will begin by asking review questions which
will be answered via the Plickers cards. These questions will discuss previously
learned subjects that can be done mentally. Then, the students will think pair share
about activities that take about an hour to do, and the teacher will write them on a
large sheet of paper for their “time museum”. The teacher will help students
distinguish activities that are always an hour, as well as some that can be an hour
sometimes (such as playing video games). The teacher will discuss with the children Commented [R1]: Domain 3b: Using Questioning and

why there are 24 hours in a day. We will relate this lesson to our guided reading book
that discusses seasons and the tilt of the Earth. The teacher will discuss with
students that it takes 24 hours for the Earth to turn once, after allowing students to
brainstorm ideas. Then, the students will make their own clocks and practice reading
different times to the hour. Their clocks will be color coded to show that anytime the Commented [R2]: Domain 3c: Engaging Student in

hour hand is after one number but still before another, the hour will read to the
previous hour. For example, the space between the numbers 2 and 3 will be color
coded to show that if the hour hand is anywhere in that area, it is still 2pm. The
teacher will display times on a clock and allow student to tell what the hour is at each
displayed time. They will display their answers on a whiteboard. The teacher will then
have students put their clocks to a certain time, and have them hold their clocks up.
The students will then practice their math boxes independently to reinforce previously
learned math skills. The teacher will then have the students answer a question with
an exit slip about what the hour currently is in using the real time classroom clock. Commented [R3]: Domain 3d: Using Assessment in
Instruction
Students will prepare their homework to take home, which will have them practice
creating times to the hour on a clock.
VI. Materials and Equipment: Plickers cards and a smartphone will be used for the
initial questions, a computer, overhead projector, paper clocks, paper, pencils,
crayons, math journals, and exit tickets will be used in this lesson plan.
VII. Assessment/Evaluation: The students will be assessed based on their Plickers
answers, time answers, their homework, and their math tickets.
VIII. Differentiation: Individualized Activities: Students that need extra support will
receive support through scaffolding by the teacher and can be offered peer support
by allowing peers to work with them on certain problems. Those that need
enrichment will be able to answer deeper questions about the task as well as assist
those that need help with the assignment.
IX. Technology: Technology used will be an overhead projector, computer,
smartphone, and Plickers technology.
X. Self-Assessment: The teacher will assess the success of this lesson by looking at
the student success on the in class assessments. The teacher will reflect on the
lesson and how it fits with the domains, as well as journal about the lesson.
