EGR Cooler Cleaning Procedures — MP7 Engines

Although there are no pre-determined service intervals for cleaning the EGR cooler on an
MP7 engine, the cooler should be cleaned whenever it becomes restricted due to an engine
or EGR system malfunction, as evidenced by driveability concerns and logged faults in the
V-MAC IV system (a typical fault code logged for a restricted EGR cooler would be a code
for EGR High Temperature). When cleaning the EGR cooler becomes necessary, the
following procedures are to be used:
1. Remove the EGR cooler from the engine.

For EGR cooler removal and reinstallation procedures, refer to

the MACK® MP7 Diesel Engine Service Manual, 5-112.

2. Place the cooler in a parts washer (or an appropriately sized basin) and pour
approximately one gallon of CLEAN ZEP Dyna 143° solvent/degreaser, or equivalent
(contact the suppliers for specifications and compatibility), into the EGR cooler inlet
opening. Allow the solvent to soak inside the cooler for at least one hour.

DO NOT use a solution that has already been used for general
parts cleaning.

3. Remove the cooler from the parts washer, and then suspend the cooler with the inlet
facing up. Allow the solvent to drain into a suitable container.

4. Steam clean the cooler from the inlet end first. Steam, water and soot will flow from the
outlet end of the cooler. Continue steam cleaning until the discharge water flowing from
the cooler outlet is clear.

Use caution when using the steam cleaner to prevent

personal injury.

Do not allow the steam cleaner nozzle to contact the fins inside
the cooler. Damage to the fins will result.

5. When the water coming from the cooler outlet is clear, turn the cooler over and
suspend it from the outlet end. Steam clean the cooler through the outlet, and continue
cleaning until the discharge water flowing from the cooler inlet is clear.
6. Hold the cooler vertically over a suitable catch pan with the cooler inlet end facing up,
and then blow clean dry shop air into the inlet to remove water and solvent from inside
the cooler. The cooler must be held vertical so that the water and solvent can flow
downward toward the outlet end.

7. Turn the cooler over, and then blow clean dry shop air into the cooler outlet end to
remove water and solvent from inside the cooler. The cooler must be held vertical so
that the water and solvent can flow downward toward the inlet.
8. When the cooler is completely clear of water and solvent, reinstall the cooler on the
engine. For installation instructions, refer to the MACK® MP7 Diesel Engine Service
Manual, 5-112.

When submitting for warranty payment, one gallon of ZEP Dyna 143° or equivalent cleaning
solution per claim is allowed.
