Engine Power Distribution Module (EPDM) Terminal Corrosion

On CX, CH and CL models, the possibility exists for moisture to enter the Engine Power
Distribution Module (EPDM). In areas where the roads are heavily treated with de-icing
agents (primarily road salt, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, etc.), prolonged exposure
to moisture mixed with these agents can cause the terminals at the bottom row of the relay
and fuse sockets to corrode. To prevent this type of corrosion from occurring, a synthetic
hydrocarbon-based dielectric grease (such as NyoGel 760G, MACK part No. 3598-
DS041214) should be applied to the terminal cavities at the bottom row of the relay and fuse
sockets as shown below. In addition, a small bead of dielectric grease should be applied to
the cover groove around the entire perimeter of the module before installing the cover.

In cases of slight to moderate corrosion, remove the relays and

fuses from the bottom row, and clean the terminals with
electrical contact cleaner and a small brass wire brush. Also
clean the female terminals, and then fill the terminal cavities with
a liberal amount of dielectric grease before installing the relays
and fuses.
In cases of severe corrosion, replacement of the EPDM may be
necessary. Fill the bottom row of the relay and fuse socket
terminal cavities with dielectric grease before installing the
relays and fuses.

Before cleaning the terminals, disconnect the batteries by

disconnecting the negative battery cable(s) first, and then the
positive cable(s).
