INTERACTIVE

 WHITEBOARD

Directions: Using the template below, describe how you would use the interactive whiteboard in your
future classroom. Consider if your ideas is teacher centered or student centered. The learning activities
should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will view/use/benefit from students’
work.
Name:  Allison  Wagner
Grade  Level:  8th  Grade
Content  Area:  Social  Studies
Standard(s)  Addressed:
ELAGSE7RI4:  Determine  the  meaning  of  words  and  phrases  as  they  are  used  in  a  text,  including
figurative,  connotative,  and  technical  meanings;  analyze  the  impact  of  a  specific  word  choice  on
meaning  and  tone.
Bloom’s  Level  of  Critical  Thinking:
___  Remembering      ___  Understanding        ___  Applying          __X_  Analyzing            ___  Evaluating          ___  Creating
Description  of  how  to  implement  in  the  class:  Prior  to  this  class  the  students  have  read  the  novel
The  Outsiders  and  they  had  also  watched  the  movie.  While  watching  the  movie,  the  students  were
asked  to  pay  attention  to  the  details,  and  what  details  were  missing  in  the  movie  that  were  presented
in  the  book.  To  begin  the  day,  the  students  would  play  a  game  on  the  SMART  Notebook.  The  game  will
be  designed  for  the  students  to  drag  details  to  what  was  and  was  not  presented  in  the  movie,
compared  to  the  novel.  After  the  interactive  the  game,  the  SMART  Notebook  will  transition  into
presentation  mode,  and  present  the  details  that  were  not  presented  in  the  novel.  The  class  will  have
an  open  discuss  about  why  they  believe  some  details  were  left  out,  and  why  other  details  were
included.  During  the  presentation,  the  students  will  have  an  opportunity  to  come  up  the  board,  and
write  why  they  believe  some  of  the  details  were  left  out,  and  they  will  be  saved  for  a  later  discussion.
After  the  presentation  is  over,  they  students  will  have  a  short  quiz  presented  through  the  SMART
Notebook  based  off  the  discussion  of  the  day.
Level  of  Technology  Implementation  (LoTi):  The  piece  of  software  is  a  level  3  on  the  LoTi  scale
because  this  lesson  is  still  teacher-‐centered,  but  is  slowly  turning  into  student-‐centered.  It  is  allowing
the  students  to  be  on  a  higher  level  of  thinking,  but  still  allows  them  the  focus  on  the  content
presented  in  the  class  without  feeling  overwhelmed.  This  piece  of  technology  could  reach  a  LoTi
Level  of  5  with  all  of  the  different  features  that  are  available,  but  for  this  lesson  it  will  only  reach  as
high  as  a  3.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. With this piece of software, I am integrating
activities and quiz into the class like I have never before. Instead of giving the students an individual warm-
up, that is supplied on a sheet of paper, I would be giving them an opportunity to use the technology
supplied in the classroom and let them work with their peers. From this activity, I am hoping the students
will notice how much more detail movies have compared to the movies that are based off these novels.
Being able to visually see it, and then talk about it, can really drive the importance and help them become
aware of how much detail the movies leave out. I hope this will help the students learn by making the
activity very interactive, and will catch their attention using a piece of technology that is not used daily.
Importance of technology: Having an interactive whiteboard in the classroom is important because it has
so much to offer that can really catch the student’s attention. Growing up, all I had in the classroom was a
whiteboard and an overheard projector; any activities done in class were not done through technology. It
was not til my last half of high school that my county installed a interactive whiteboard, but even with this
new technology the teachers did not know much about it. So, having this technology in the classroom is a
major benefactor, and if trained correctly can have a major impact in the classroom. This allows the

students to interact together as a class, and to present information to the class, and a teacher can even
provide assessments through this technology. Without this technology, it can be hard to get the students
attention and have them engaged in the lesson. Even though students might not engage with this type of
technology, it would be a way to breakaway from the traditional classroom set up.
Reflection: This experience taught me that it is okay to branch away from what is normal in the classroom,
and to try something new. Before learning of this technology, I assumed this was just an average type of
technology that would be impossible to learn. But what I learned is that with some practice, and some help,
it can be a piece of technology that can be learned and useful in the classroom. I am excited to one day use
this in my own classroom, and have my students actively engaged in what I am teaching.
