TASTE OF CAYMAN 2
As a part of the course outline for the Seminar on Technology and Society, it was
necessary for students to volunteer a day of service at the Taste of Cayman. The event was held
on Saturday the 27th of January, 2018, at the Festival Green in Camana Bay. This year marked
the 30th anniversary of Taste of Cayman. The festival allows restaurants around the Cayman
Islands to display their cuisines, local produce, and drinks to the thousands of attendees. Having
such a diversity of restaurants around the islands and multicultural society, Taste of Cayman
offers something for everyone to enjoy. This includes delicious foods, desserts and cocktails to
that are sampled throughout the day (Elyse Gallacher personal communication, January 25,
2017).
In 2017, they had over 5000 people attended the event to enjoyed over 18,000 portions of
food from 36 vendors. For the festivity to be a success, however, it requires volunteers to offer
their services free of charge. To help put this altogether required the help of 189 volunteers in
2017. In 2018, the amount increased to some 250 volunteers that assisted with the preparations,
setup and running of the event (Elyse Gallacher personal communication, January 25, 2017).
Although I attended the event previously, I found it surprising the size and how much planning
Having the opportunity to volunteer for the setup, I was able to meet and interact with
some of the vendors before the event. In talking to them, they seemed very passionate about
what they were doing and excited to be a part of the anniversary celebration. While working
with another student from ICCI, we were treated with live music by a band that was practicing
for a show the same night. To my surprise, it required much soft tuning of the different
instruments and adjusting the various sounds to allow the vocals to flow with perfection through
the speakers. According to the author Easton (2016), in every aspect of today’s society

technology becomes part of human life allowing us to function effectively. This is rather
evident, as I use technology every day of my life at work, home, and at school.
