Abstract The present study is part of a group of studies related with the evaluation of
impact of the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT)
in the development of general and cross-curricular competencies in primary
schools.
The main objective of the investigation presented is to evaluate impact of the
integration of ICT in the development of abilities related with the competence
to learn how to learn, more specifically in what it concerns to the acquisition of
effective work methods and to the dimensions which constitute this
methodological cross-curricular competency: to analyze the task to be
performed, to begin the process, to perform the task and to analyze his/her
procedure.
In the theoretical framing it was intended to build a reference frame that
allowed the clarification of the study field of this investigation and the
understanding of the involved concepts. There were also boarded, in a brief
form, the concepts of competency, learning strategies, study methods and
metacognition, as well as notions related with competencies evaluation and
with ICT integration in educational contexts.
For the accomplishment of this study, and to guarantee an effective
integration of the ICT in school context, was developed a project using ICT as
a resource which aimed to promote interactions between participants, pupils
from four schools of different regions of the country, supported by Blackboard
communication platform and MSN Messenger.
In this study, the unit of analysis was one of the participant groups in the
project, for this reason was carried out a qualitative single case study.
Considering the reduced number of studies reported in literature with similar
purposes, this study can be considered as an exploratory study.
The data was collected through several instruments such as effective working
methods classification scales, technological skills classification scales, inquiry
by questionnaire, individual and group evaluation registers.
From data analysis was made possible to conclude that the integration of ICT
can benefit the development of abilities related with the competence to learn
how to learn and the acquisition of effective working methods. The
development of the project and the use of ICT have also contributed for the
development of pupils’ technological competences.
