How do we learn the software?

Tutorial based learning

Recommended Software Tutorial:

The tutorial used for this course is a custom text created specifically for this
course using the PTC eLearning Library. A license for online course access can be
purchased at the following link:

http://store.ptc.com/buffalo

The cost is $50 for a 1-year license. The tutorial will not be available immediately.
You need to be added to the course manually by the instructor, so plan
accordingly and do not delay in purchasing a license.

This is the same tutorial platform that I use in MAE177.

To access tutorial:

Once you have been assigned to the course by the instructor, you can access the
software at the following link with a username and password.

https://precisionlms.ptc.com/

There will be a MAE377 Tutorial which covers key topics for the course. This will
appear in under the ‘My Learning’ tab. There is also a ‘Find Training’ tab, which
will allow you to search the entire database for tutorials.

Why are we using an online tutorial?

Advantages:

• Cheaper- in the past students needed to purchase 2

printed tutorials. The total cost was $100+.

• Customizable- topics selected to align with the course

goals and projects.

• Access to an large library of other instructional

resources.

How do we learn the software?

Tutorial based learning

This tutorial is recommended. Some students can get through the course
using other resources.

I have posted a set of tutorials that a student developed. There are also a
variety of video demonstration available online (directly from PTC, also
some on YouTube).

If you have never used modeling software- I strongly suggest purchasing

the tutorial.

Software used: Creo Parametric 3.0 & Creo Simulate 3.0- available 24/7 in 1019 Furnas
Hall. You will have swipe-card access to the lab.

NOTE:
Students can download a copy of the software from the PTC website. If you plan to do this,
make sure you download version 3.0, which corresponds to the version in the lab. The
instructor will not be able to assist you with installation problems.

The student version of the software does not have the full capabilities of Creo Simulate 3.0.
There could also be compatibility issues with the student version and the version in 1019
Furnas.

*TopHat keeps track of the questions you answer and also the questions
you answer correctly. The grade from TopHat will count as 10% of your
grade, with 5% coming from submitting an answer (you get these points
even if you answer a question incorrectly) and 5% coming from the
questions you answer correctly; this means that you need to pay attention!
Failure to answer a question counts as an incorrect response.

Example Calculation
Throughout the course the instructor asks 50 questions (this is just
an example- I have no idea how many questions will be asked). A
student answers 45 of the questions and gets 35 of them correct. They
will receive 8% of the total 10%.

45 35
∗ 5% + ∗ 5% = 8%
50 50

Grading Policy:
All assignments and projects will be assigned a grade out of 100 points. 10
points will be deducted for each day that an assignment or project is late-
except for the Final Project, which will not be accepted if it is late. A valid
excuse for missing an exam or due date must be provided ahead of time in
order to schedule a makeup exam or establish an alternate due date.

The following grading scale will be used to determine final grades:

A: 93-100, A-:90-93, B+: 87-90, B: 83-87, B-: 80-83, C+: 77-80,

C: 73-77, C-:70-73, D+: 67-70, D: 65-67, F: below 65

Why do we use the Creo platform?
Advantages:
Very powerful platform:
• Most capable software for handling large
assemblies (thousands of parts).

• Excellent surface modeling capabilities.

• Built-in analysis software.

• Best compatibility with other modeling packages.

Final Design Project
Objective:
The complete design of an original functional product of your choosing, from
the initial design inception to the final manufacturing and production stages.
Design considerations should include ergonomics, appearance, installation,
maintenance, serviceability, cost, reliability, and safety. The following should
be included in detail for completeness:

• Problem Identification, Product Description, & Product Comparison

• Solid modeling of parts and assemblies
• Working drawings showing full details of the product
• Include detailed drawings of each part, assembly drawings and bill of
materials (BOM).
• Design Analysis, including finite element analysis (FEA).
MAE 377 Product design in a CAE environment
Final Design Project
Design Requirements:
A minimum of 12 custom parts (parts designed by you) must be
incorporated into the final design (standard purchased parts such as nuts,
bolts, washers, etc. do not count towards this part total).

Note regarding product selection: The product chosen should have a level
of complexity that requires this many parts. Do not choose a product
constructed mainly from wood. Furniture and electronic devices are not
recommended, as they typically do not result in very good projects.

The product should include complex parts such as threads, gears, springs,
etc., which require the more complex modeling functions available in Creo
(patterns, sweeps, blends, etc).
MAE 377 Product design in a CAE environment
Final Design Project
Assignment 2- Preliminary Project Proposal
Complete a preliminary project proposal, which covers a problem
identification and a product description with appropriate hand sketches
to convey the idea. The proposal should also include a product
comparison and a preliminary design analysis. See the following pages
for more detail.
Everyone must complete an individual proposal, which should be typed.
MAE 377 Product design in a CAE environment
Final Design Project
Problem Identification: Identify the problem that you are trying to solve. Why is there a
need for the product?

Product Description: Describe what the product does and explain how the product works;
include sketches to convey the idea. What is new and innovative about your product?

Product Comparison: Give advantages and disadvantages of your product and of similar
products. Show pictures of products that are similar.

Preliminary Design Analysis: There are many different ways a problem can be solved. Why
did you choose your design solution? What were some of the alternative design solutions
that you considered? Justify selection of your design.

Also discuss how your product meets the desired needs within realistic constraints such as
economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and
sustainability.

NOTE: You will lose points if you choose a product that already exists! It is acceptable for
your product to be a modification of an existing product. Make sure you emphasis the
modification and how your product is unique.

Final Design Project
The Preliminary Project Proposal is an individual effort. Everyone will do
it on their own.

The Final Design Project will be a group submission.

How do we get from Individual to Group?

Groups are formed after the Preliminary Project Proposal is completed.

Each group will choose one project (from the individual proposals within
that group) that they think is the most promising to move forward with.
