DRILLING
Involvesa powered rotary cutting head on
the end of the shaft , which is driven into
the ground as its rotates.
Open-hole drilling and core drilling
Types of Rotary Drilling
Open-hole drilling
- soil and weak rocks
- material recovered is mixed with the
drilling lubricant
- only suitable for rapid drilling
Core drilling
- rocks and stiff clays
- the bit cuts an annular hole in the
material and an intact core is removed as a
sample
- is carried out using wire-line, double
or triple-tube core barrels with diamond or
tungsten-tipped core bits
-
Rotary Drilling
Best suited for boring of diameter more
than 100 mm
Not suited for coarse gravel, boulders and
badly fissured rocks
Rate of progress is greater in soils and
rocks
Uniform, clean hole with less disturbance
of soil is produced
