Did the newly independent America create the type of government it was looking for with the
Articles of Confederation?

Points For: Points Against:

1. + In the 13 states every person is able to

enjoy rights as a citizen or “are entitled
to all privileges and immunities of free
citizens” This includes having free
speech, go in and out of different states,
everyone being equal. Section 4 of the
Articles of Confederation.
2. + The states are united and have a social
contract with each other.
3. + Congress has to approve everything
4. + No war, states cannot start war against
each other unless another nation starts
war against them.
1. - Can’t be assembled for war unless the
people are able to physically see
something happening.
2. - Choice of paying taxes lead to the
government’s debt
3. - Each state had its own currency
4. - When states were asked to pay for
war, they couldn’t enforce everyone,
and even if they did, the burden would
be uneven. Section 9 paragraph one of
the articles of confederation.

Conclusion

Yes or No? (And Why.)

No, because the government although tried to charge the states with taxes they didn’t enforce
this well leaving the government in debt. They made didn’t let states prepare for battle until
they actually saw what was going on. The congress was weak they couldn’t control and properly
maintain the 13 states.
