Module – II

Tutorial – 2 (for 9th March, 2018)

1. (a) How many molecules of oxygen strike 1 cm2 surface in 1 s at 298 K when
the pressure is 10-6 torr ?
(b) For a clean surface with 10 15 sites per cm2, when exposed to oxygen at 10-6
torr for 1 s, calculate the fraction of sites that will be covered, considering
every molecule sticks.
2. Calculate molecular gas density for an ideal gas at 300K and at 10-6 torr.
3. The enthalpy of physisorption of hydrogen molecule on mica surface is -36 kJ
mol-1. Estimate the residence time of a hydrogen molecule on mica surface at
300K and 100K. (τ0 = 1 x 10-12 s)
4. Experimental adsorption data are often tabulated as the equivalent volume of
gas (V) that will adsorb onto the surface at a particular temperature and
pressure. Typically, this volume of adsorbed gas is tabulated as the volume
that the gas would occupy under 1 atm and 0 deg C. From the date given
below for 1 cm2 surface, determine the values of b, volume of gas corresponds
to a monolayer coverage (Vm) and σ0.
P (10-12 torr) V (10-8 m3)
2.55 3.39
1.79 3.17
1.30 2.89
0.98 2.62
0.71 2.45
0.46 1.95
0.30 1.55
0.21 1.23
5. Derive Langmuir adsorption isotherm for competitive adsorption of two
molecules A and B, which are adsorbed molecularly and compete for the same
adsorption sites.
