Unit II
For the force system shown in figure determine the direction and magnitude of the resultant from O.
527. 12
Determine the support reaction at A and B for the simply supported beam.
Forces 32 kN, 24 kN, 24 kN and 120 kN are concurrent, non-coplanar acting at the origin and directed
through the points whose coordinates are A(2,1,6), B(4,-2,-5), C(-3,-2,1), D(5,1,-2) respectively.
Determine the resultant. 14
Unit III
A ladder of length 10m and weight 300 N is leaning against a vertical wall with an angle of 30° to the
vertical. A man of weight 500 N climbs the ladder. Find the position of the man at the instant the ladder
begins to slip. The coefficient of friction for all surfaces is 0.3. 12
Unit IV
Find the principal moment of inertia and its direction for the area shown in figure.247 12
Over a cylinder of height 15cm and radius of bas 5cm, a flat end of a hemisphere of radius 5 cm is
placed. Locate the centre of gravity of the compound set assuming that the density of both solids is
same. 10
Unit V
A police officer observes a motorist who is approaching at a uniform speed of 80 km/h. He, in his patrol
car, starts chasing it as it just crosses him. After accelerating for 8 sec at a constant rate, he attains his
top speed of 120 km/h. how long does it take to overtake the motorist and at what distance. 10
Two stones A and B are projected from the same point at 45° and 30° respectively, inclined to the
horizontal. Find the ratio of the velocities of projection of A and B if the maximum height reached by
both is the same. 10
A stone is thrown vertically upwards at the bank of a watertank, which is located 50m above the water
level. If it strikes the water after 5 sec, determine i) the speed at which the stone was thrown up and ii)
the speed at which the stone strikes the water. 10
