Assignment # 1

INTRODUCTION TO HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES

1. For the surface irrigation and drainage network, Fig. 1, suggest the suitable structure and mention its main
function To simplify the problem, fill the shown Table (1).

2. A drainage ditch is to be designed to collect rain water of a catchment area shown in Fig. 2. It has a
rectangular shape ditch of best hydraulic cross-section (b=2y). Draw a sketch to show the location of the
ditch. The longitudinal slope of the ditch is 0.004 and Manning coefficient is 1/n = 50. The design
discharge is given by the Rational method, Q = C I A, where C is a runoff coefficient, I is the rain fall
intensity in m/s, A is the catchment area in m2. Consider, C = 0.7 and I = 100 mm/hr. Estimate the
dimensions of the dich. At road intersection, the flow is to be conveyed by a pipe culvert of dimeter not
more than 3.0 m. What is the number of pipes used so that the velocity does not exceeds 1.5 m/s. Draw a
sketch?

3. Drainage open channels (ditches) are to be designed to collect rain water of a catchment area shown in
Fig. 3. Each ditch has a rectangular section (b = 2y). The longitudinal slope of the ditch = 0.0003 and
Manning coefficient, 1/n = 50. Consider, C = 0.7 and I = 150 mm/hr. You are asked to estimate the
dimensions of each ditch, b/y = 2.

4. Figure 4 is a plan view of a storm sewer system draining three sub basins. Use the Rational method to
determine the size of pipe (1/n = 50, S = 0.0001) and channel assuming the channel flow with mean
velocity of 1.5 m/s and b/y = 4. Assume constant C = 0.8 and I = 6.0 inch/hr. Sub basin A = Sub basin B
= 8.0 acre, Sub basin C = 20 acre.
