1.0 Introduction

Roxsil Silicone Sdn. Bhd introduce improving a product’s water resistance an important
value-added process that can be helpful in a range of environmental conditions. Waterproof
materials have applications in underwater projects, semi-submerged aquatic settings, and in
general weather protection services. But whether shielding an outdoor structure from rain or
producing clothing that is impenetrable to liquid, the majority of waterproofing processes rely
on silicon to some degree waterproofing with Silicon-Based Materials. Roxsil breathable paint
is based on German technology proven over 40 years in Europe and around the world.
Ordinary paint just stick to the wall while Roxsil breathable paint has more feature in it. The
molecular structure of Roxsil’s silicone and the quartz structure in the cement wall are almost
identical. This close affinity allows Roxsil breathable paint to merge with the wall surface so
it cannot lift or peel easily.

Ordinary paints always require one coat of primer or sealer when prepare the wall.
Through Roxsil open pore technology has now combined primer and paint together so that
Roxsil breathable paint can be applied straight to the wall. Using this technology less paint are
used and also saving completion time because the Roxsil breathable paint is priming itself.

2.0 Problem Statement

Water retained inside cement walls are the number one cause of premature external
paint failure. The solution lies in the scientific discovery of the Rosxil Open Pore Technology
paint called roxsil breathable paint. This paint is breathable and porous. It allows excessive
moisture inside cement walls especially on exteriors to escape without affecting adhesion to
the substrate. Choosing the right paint systems compatible with the cement plastered substrate
will reduce major paint problems.

Water retained inside cement wall cause by several factor such as poor drainage allows
water to collect at the base, through hairline cracks when it rains and during construction and
plastering. When applying ordinary paint, plastic film on surface will trap water inside the wall.
When the sun heats this water, it expands to form water vapour and forces its way out of the
wall, damaging the paint. It cause:

 Algae and fungus

 Blistering and peeling
 Chalking
 Efflorescence
 Rising damp
 Discolouration

Efflorescence is the single largest defects affecting the exteriors of most building.
Efflorescence can be seen as the white powdery deposits that on the most cement rendered
walls. It is by far most common defects ruining the beauty and appearance of buildings. It
affects surface like cement rendered walls especially on bricks, cement blocks, lightweight
concrete blocks and etc.

3.0 Objective

3.1) Efficient barrier against ponding water

This is single biggest problem leading to roof leakages. Once properly dried and cured, Roxsil
rooftop silicone waterproofing can withstand even ponding water without softening or
delamination leading to years of further leak free services.

3.2) Suitable for wet and humid conditions

Roxsil rooftop silicone waterproofing is built on inorganic silicone backbone of alternating

silicone and oxygen atoms with organic side groups. Silicones have very high thermal and
thermal oxidative resistance and is not affected by ultraviolet radiation. It is well known
through decades of customer experience and industry usage of silicone sealants that silicones
are far superior to organic materials in resisting damage from long term weathering. Silicones
will remain flexible and do not become stiff, brittle or crack.

3.3) Protection against rain and water

Roxsil rooftop silicone waterproofing offers outstanding waterproofing properties especially
for metal roofing and RC roof slabs. Acrylic roof paints are normally applied at 60 micron
thickness in two coats. Once fully cured, Roxsil rooftop silicone waterproofing forms a weather
tight membrane that is impervious to water.

4.0 Scope

Silicone waterproofing system can be used in various parts of buildings such as:

4.1) Above screed

Roxsil rooftop silicone waterproofing above screed is the ultimate rooftop

waterproofing membrane system. Rosxil paints 601 above screed is a one component
liquid silicone membrane. As a moisture curing product, it will cure under ambient
conditions to form a water impermeable membrane. Roxsil breathable paints above
screed is thermal oxidative resistance whereby maintaining long term durability of the
product. This is only reinforced concrete rooftop waterproofing which really works
when others system fail.

4.2) Below screed

Below screed is the front runner for waterproofing systems applied onto a concrete slab
and covered by layer of cement screed. It is also the most problematic system because
if there is failure especially water leaks, it will be very difficult to identify the source
of the leak. Roxsil 501 installation below screed is also one component liquid silicone
membrane. As a moisture curing products, it will cure under ambient conditions to form
a water impermeable membrane. It is also a thermal oxidative resistance whereby
maintaining long term durability of product. This is only reinforced concrete rooftop
waterproofing system which really works when other system fail.

4.3) Balcony

Rosxil balcony silicone waterproofing B401 is a very effective waterproofing system

especially when it is exposed outdoors against ultraviolet radiation (UV), heat and cold
weather changes causing expansion and contraction thus causing surface cracks and
water penetration problems. It is also one component liquid silicone membrane. As a
moisture curing products, it will cure under ambient conditions to form a water
impermeable membrane. This breathable paints also a thermal oxidative resistance
whereby maintaining long term durability of product.

4.4) Building interior

Roxsil internal silicone waterproofing INT301 is a long term and durable waterproofing
system. Hidden against the ravages of weathering, rain, etc. Roxsil INT301 will last
longer than regular products. Roxsil INT301 is one component liquid silicone
membrane. As a moisture curing products, it will cure under ambient conditions to form
a water impermeable membrane. Internal paints for Roxsil breathable paints is thermal
oxidative resistance whereby maintaining long term durability of product.

5.0 Method

Products application for Roxsil breathable paint. Applying for interior building requires
Roxsil dry zone treatment, is water based proprietary deep penetrating impregnator water
repellent designed to help control efflorescence and efflorescence marks caused by rising
dampness. Used as an undercoat for Roxsil breathable paint system. While for exterior
buildings use Roxsil breathable paint 5 is designed for general use on exterior cement rendered
walls. It has a unique ability to lock into the cement surface, giving it adhesion not possible in
ordinary paint. Water trapped inside wall is the number one cause of paint damage. Roxsil
breathable paint let the wall breathe, allowing trapped water to escape.

5.1 Apparatus and materials

 B601- above screed

 B501- below screed
 B401- balcony
 INT301- interior

5.2 Installation

i. Application preparation the surface to be treated should be dry and free from
loose matter from dust, grease and debris.
ii. Defective joints in brick and stonework should be repointed
iii. It is necessary to treat hair cracks, but large cracks should be made good and
allowed to dry before treatment.
iv. Efflorescence should, as far as possible, be removed by brushing the surface of
the repointed areas.
v. The Silicone Water proofer is flooded on to the surface so that a rundown of
approximately 300 mm is obtained

6.0 Result and Analysis

The composition of waterproofing materials contain with optimum concentration of

silicone resins with hydrocarbon solvents. The efficiency of Silicone Water proofer as a
colourless permeability reducing compound is further improved by the addition of a dispersing
agent ensuring maximum depth of penetration and rapid formation of a water repellent surface.

 Specific gravity: 0.79 at 20°C

 Flashpoint: 32°C
Action:

i) When applied by brush or spray to surfaces of natural stonework, brickwork,

certain types of concrete block, artificial stonework and cement paint, it
penetrates deeply beneath the surface to line the pores with a thin water repellent
coating without significantly changing the appearance or affecting the breathing
property of the wall.
ii) This substantially reduces rain and damp penetration, protects the surface from
discolouration and weathering and aids in preventing efflorescence and spalling
of the surface from frost attack.
iii) In industrial areas, the sealing of masonry with Silicone Waterproofer protects
the surface from attack by the acidified atmosphere and aids in preventing
discoloration by smoke. Effect on Thermal Insulation Loss of heat through wet
brickwork, etc., is one and half times greater than when it is dry.
iv) Prevention of rain and damp penetration with Silicone Waterproofer therefore
aids in preserving the heat insulating properties of the wall.

6.1) Effect on Thermal Insulation

Loss of heat through wet brickwork, etc., is one and half times greater than when it is dry.
Prevention of rain and damp penetration with Silicone Waterproofer therefore aids in
preserving the heat insulating properties of the wall.

6.2) Effect on Masonry

The application of Silicone Waterproofer does not significantly change, darken or form a sheen
on the surface treated. If required, the surface can be decorated afterwards with oil paints.

7.0 Costing

7.1) Ordinary Paints

Based on information obtained from CIDB Malaysia sources the prices for
building materials specifically for an acrylic emulsion is cost RM120.00 per 5
litre according to the latest prices value in market.

7.2) Roxsil Breathable Paints

Roxsil breathable paints is an open pore technology from German. Its paint are
imported and distributed throughout market in Malaysia. It cost more than
ordinary paint but maintenance and painting back can be neglected because
Roxsil breathable paint last longer and more durable. Cost for 5 litre of this
paints is RM228.00 which is RM108.00 more expensive than ordinary acrylic
emulsion paints.

8.0 Conclusions

Waterproofing based materials can be used as alternative materials in replacing

ordinary paints. This open pore technology prove that breathable paints allows excessive
moisture inside cement walls to escape without affecting the paints adhesion to the substrate,
thus preventing problems such as blistering, peeling, chalking, efflorescence, rising damp and
discolouration. In addition, by using this materials which is silicone have very high thermal
and thermal oxidative resistance. Silicone sealants far better than organic materials in resisting
damage from various factor such as weathering and it has long term of durability.
