Reflection: Domain 3
(2013) domains, especially domain 3 which relates directly to instruction. I taught a lesson plan
on mathematics, and reflected on the strengths and weaknesses of my lesson plan. Focusing on
my strengths and weaknesses in domain 3 will help me to create dynamic and engaging
instruction in the classroom. This domain will also help me ensure that all of my students are
The first subsection refers to communicating with students. In the classroom and during
this lesson plan, I focused on communicating clearly and in the proper language with my
students. I made sure to communicate with my students both verbally, and by writing directions
on the board. I consider myself proficient in this area, and can continue to improve. My goal is
to continue to provide clear directions, and to make sure I am telling the students each specific
step needed to complete a task. Giving my students detailed instructions will help them to stay
The second subsection refers to using questioning and discussion techniques in the
classroom. During this lesson, I used think pair share activities with the students in order to
improve discussion and thinking in the classroom. I am developing in this domain, and want to
ensure I am using higher level questioning and in-depth questioning lines to help students think
deeper about the material. Thinking deeply about the material will help students gain higher
understanding about the material, and be able to apply it to multiple situations. This is one of my
The third subsection of domain 3 refers to engaging students in learning. I made sure that
engaging students in learning was a large part of the lesson plan. I had the students interact with
their clocks by making them, as well as using them kinesthetically by showing times on the
clocks. I made sure that the students were engaged by creating their own answers on Plickers
cards and all being held accountable for their answers. I also held the students accountable by
telling times and writing them on a whiteboard, so that they all had to participate in the learning.
I am proficient in this area of domain 3, and am continuing to work on new and creative ways to
implement total participation techniques in the classroom. Using these techniques, I can ensure
all of my students are engaged, learning, and held accountable for their learning.
The fourth subsection is using assessment in instruction. In this lesson plan, I used my
exit slips as my main method for assessment of the new material presented in this lesson plan.
The math tickets asked an essential question related to the material, which was “What is the
current hour on the class clock?”. I used this to see who was able to tell time to the hour, and the
students that need remedial instruction. I also used the Plickers cards to assess previously taught
material, and to see what students need more instruction in that material as well. I feel I am
proficient in this area, as I have developed ways to assess all students at the end of the lesson and
hold them individually accountable. As I continue my experience, I am looking to use new and
different methods to assess my students and see their strong and weak areas.
The final subsection of the Danielson (2013) domain 3 is demonstrating flexibility and
responsiveness. I demonstrated this by keeping account of how many students were unable to
correctly answer the total participation hold up questions in the classroom. If there were many
students that required assistance, I reviewed and reworded the lesson to help reach more of my
students. I tried different methods and visuals to help make sure all of my students were able to
answer the questions. I am developing in this area, as I continue to perfect my methods for
reaching all students and modifying instruction during lesson plans to make sure it is working in
the classroom.
classroom instruction. Working on areas in this domain will help me to deliver competent and
engaging instruction that will motivate all of my students. This domain can help to increase
learning, excitement, and total participation. My main areas of focus will continue to be using
questioning and discussion techniques and demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness in the
