Purpose of Redundancy & Redundancy Modes

Purpose of Redundancy

Redundancy is also called remote redundancy or geographical redundancy. With a redundancy solution deployed, when
one of two sites in different geographical locations fails to provide services due to uncontrollable factors such as a natural
disaster, war, and power failure, the other site takes over the services. To ensure the secure and reliable running of the IMS
network, Huawei implements the redundancy of the key NEs of the IMS core. The redundancy solution helps to improve the
IMS network reliability and enhance the ability to handle emergency faults that occur due to natural disasters. It also helps
to enhance the self-recovery ability of the network. This prevents a disaster, for example, a power failure, natural disaster,
and device fault, from causing large-scale service interruptions.

Redundancy Modes
• 1+1 primary/secondary mode
 When the primary network device is available, all the services are processed by the primary network device but not by the
secondary network device. When the primary network device becomes unavailable, the remote redundancy network device
takes over the services.
 Advantage: Maintenance management is convenient

• 1+1 mutual backup mode

 Two network devices in different geographical locations respectively function as the primary network devices in the pre-
configured ranges. When the network in one of the geographical locations becomes unavailable, the primary network device in
the other geographical location can take over all the services on the faulty network.
 Advantage: The risk of a faulty secondary network device is eliminated. The redundant capacity helps to improve the network
ability to resist impacts.

Redundant Primary
Remarks
NE Solution

The SPG2800s in both sites are activated, and the BSS determines which one is active and which one is
1+1 standby. The provisioning from the BSS to the two SPG2800s, however, must use active/standby
SPG2800 primary/secon mode, and services can be provided to the standby site only when the active site fails.
dary
The provisioning from the SPG2800s to the HSS, ATS, or ENS also uses active/standby mode.

The SE2600 supports geographical redundancy. The active SE2600 backs up the registration information
1+1 mutual to the standby SE2600 using HA hot backup mode, ensuring that the UE can initiate calls without initiating
SBC a new registration request after the active SE2600 becomes faulty.
