Art is something that complements our life.

In its many forms, it presents fantastic


opportunities for discussion, focused language work and skills-based activities. Previously the
element of art is not the main attention in the teaching and learning process of English
language. Therefore, the students became easily bored upon the English subject. However,
nowadays educator starts to take account of art in English lesson. The arts in education subject
also are being held with the main focus on the visual, music and movement. Students who have
been taught in a fun and creative ways love to come to class. Thus the application of visual,
music and movement in the teaching and learning of English language can be seen as follows.

Firstly, as one of the main focus in arts in education subject, the element of visual plays
an important role to help the students to understand the lesson of that day. By having the visual
arts activity, the students can clarify thoughts, ideas, and feeling which are hard to be expressed
by words. Therefore, they will learn on how to express it through visual in which spontaneously
develop their creativity. This is a good training to them as, they also learn on how to create,
beautify and change something into another thing despite learning the English aspect. It is also
good for special need children, as they can communicate effectively with others through visual.
As human brain has a visual cortex that is larger than the auditory cortex, a picture is indeed
worth a thousand words (Willis, n.d.). So, teacher needs to encourage the students to develop
their visual arts through continuous activities like drawing, coloring, cut and paste and many
more. This kind of activity looks simple but actually it contributes a lot to the students’ self-
development.

There are many visual activities that can be conducted during the lesson. One of them is
drawing and colouring. Teacher can modify the teaching process and make it interesting in
order to catch the students’ attention. For instance, when teaching proposition teacher can give
a drawing of bird that was surrounding by the other objects and asks the students to colour
which object that shows the position of the bird according to the teacher’s order. By the end of
this lesson, students will be able to identify the prepositions and understand the usage of it. In
addition, teacher can also ask the students to draw their ambitions and colour it nicely. After
that, teacher shall call all students one by one and asked them to describe about their drawing
of ambitions in front of the class. Having this kind of activity can foster the students’
imaginations and innovation as they themselves who illustrate the kind of ambitions that they
want to be. It is also helps to boost the students’ soft skill of speaking and vocabulary when they
have to present their drawing as well as sharing their thought.
On the other hand, the music also gives a big impact toward the learning and teaching
process. Music can be used to help in controlling the classroom environment or support that
content within the class. Learning with music also can help the students to improve their
concentration, memory, motivates the learning, become relax and having a fun learning
process. From music, the bond between teacher and students can be tighten when both of them
get into the same favourable music or songs. By this ways, the students may be closer to the
teacher but in the same time still have the respect toward them. Children are natural music
lover, thus it is vital to choose an appropriate music to be taught to them. Among of the songs
that are suitable are transition songs; song that indicate transitions of activity, energy boosters
song; songs that need the students to move around, animal songs, remembering names,
alphabet songs, colours, rewards, and student teacher. These kinds of songs can enhance
students’ interest in learning and instill moral values in themselves.
Doing activities in class requires the teacher to be able to control the class so the
learning process still going on. Hence, here are some of the tips for using music effectively.
Firstly, identify the learner’s age, as the selection of song must be appropriate according to the
learner’s ability. After that, think about the language level of your class as it determines the song
and activities that will be held. It must be fair for everyone in the class in order to enjoy the
lesson. Moreover, teacher also needs to be very particular about the cultural issues regarding
the make-up of your class and be more sensitive toward it. Next, plan the music lesson well and
select the right song that suit your lesson either vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation or a
particular topic. On the same side, there are fifth methods for making a song as the focus in
class. The first one is listening to the song by showing a video clip of that song to the class; let
the students to enjoy the song first. Second, teacher can ask question about the tittle of the
song to get the respond from the students upon the song. Third, listen to the song again and
this time display the lyric so that they can read it and identify the unknown word later. Fourth,
teacher can focus on the particular aspect of grammar such as verb and ask them to recognize
how many verbs are in the lyrics. Lastly, teacher can round things off with some creativity but
must relate to the lesson of that day. To sum up, music is not only about enjoyable but it also
can be a tool for changes.

Besides, the next element of arts in education is movement. Movement is very crucial in
learning and teaching process as it can make the students to be focus and active all the time.
Having an activity based on movement can help those who are passive in the class to
participate in the activity done. By having movement also can help to boost the students,
locomotive movement, non-locomotive and manipulative the movement. Example of activity for
the movement is by putting the school field. Teacher nowadays need to be very happy as the
essay of this students is used.

As a conclusion, visual, music and movement can be very significant elements and let
the others settle the rest of the problem. The visual, music and movement itself, can be a good
students and the music of the activity is okay. Lastly the movement, the movement is quite
good.
