VS. THE WHITE SOX…the Mariners and White Sox meet today in the finale of 3 Cactus League
match-ups this spring…Chicago won each of the first two meetings this spring: 5-3, on Feb. 24 in
Peoria and 4-2 on March 12 in Peoria…the two clubs will meet six times this season: April 23-25 in
Chicago and July 20-22 in Seattle…the White Sox lead the all-time regular season series, 237-201.
Z MARKS THE SPOT…Mike Zunino went 4-for-4 with 3 home runs and 5 RBI in the Mariners 7-4
victory over the Brewers on Wednesday…he is 11-for-16 (.688) with 7 runs, 1 double, 4 home runs

COUNTDOWN TO OPENING NIGHT…the Mariners open the 2018 regular season in 6 days on
Thursday, March 29 vs. Cleveland at 7:10 p.m. at Safeco Field…for the first time since 2015 – and
just the second time in the last 10 years – the Mariners will open the regular season at Safeco Field…

FIELD OF DREAMS…on October 5, 2017, Mariners head groundskeeper Bob Christofferson and
the Mariners groundscrew, along with a crew from A.M. Landshaper in Spokane, began a month-
long process of replacing the entire playing surface at Safeco Field…this marked the first complete
replacement of the ballpark’s playing surface since the original installation in spring of 1999…the
grass is from Country Green Turf Farms in Olympia, Wash., the original supplier of Safeco Field’s
turf…in addition to new grass, the dirt areas of the infield were replaced with about 260 tons of
clay from Salt Lake City, Utah…the project returned the entire playing surface to its original level,
lowering the elevation by about four inches.
#EDGARHOF…legendary Mariners designated hitter Edgar Martinez received 70.4% of the vote
in the Class of 2018 Hall of Fame balloting…it marked Martinez’s highest percentage in his nine
years on the ballot…of the 422 votes cast by voters from the BBWAA, Edgar was included on 297
ballots…among the 28 players who have ever eclipsed 70 percent on the BBWAA ballot without
gaining election that year, all 28 are Hall of Famers…Martinez, who is entering his 4th year, his 3rd
full season, as the Mariners hitting coach, has one year of eligibility remaining on the BBWAA ballot.
