Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire are ROM hacks of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Their main purpose is to provide a more challenging game experience while not artificially limiting the
player.
The premier feature of Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire is the ground-up redesign of Pokémon Trainers in the
world to increase the game's challenge. Every trainer in the game has been edited, and the level curve
expects use of the Experience Share, which means that you level up very quickly. You should be hitting Level
100 by the time you get to the Elite Four.
The secondary focus of RR/SS is to function as a sort of "20XX Hack Pack" where everything obtainable is
100% legal for real online battles, and some features are designed to make preparing competitive teams
much less of a hassle.

Drastically Steeper Level Curve!
Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire’s leveling curve is balanced around the use of the Experience Share, which
allows for explosive growth! Once you obtain this Item in Petalburg Woods, don’t turn it off. Without going
out of your way to grind, you’re expected to hit Level 100 in time for the eighth Gym Badge! Enemy Trainers
are intended to be even or slightly higher level than your team at any given moment.
Skipping too many optional Trainers will leave you underleveled!

Welcome to Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire versions! The
starting town of Littleroot is no different than in the Alpha Sapphire and
Omega Ruby versions you’re used to. You’ll move in to your new
home, meet a new neighbor, and more here. All in a day’s work! The
real adventure begins once you get Poké Balls from Birch’s Lab.
Three Ways
to Play!
Depending on your preference,
there are three Wild Pokémon
Encounter options for Rutile Ruby
and Star Sapphire. Choose which
one you want to play when you
set up the installation. The “Legit
Build” of the game will have you
encounter the same Pokémon you
would in a regular run of Omega
Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, except
the hidden foreign Pokémon
unlocked after the Super-Ancient
Pokémon encounter are available
from the start. The “Leveled Build”
offers the same options as the
Legit Build, but increases the
Level of Wild Pokémon to
help them keep up with Rutile
Ruby & Star Sapphire’s
increased level curve. Finally,
the “679 Build” adds many new Challenge Mode!

10
This is where your new, challenging Pokémon adventure truly begins!
Route 101 connects Littleroot Town and Oldale Town. There aren’t any
Trainers to worry about here, but make sure to keep an eye out for newly
available Wild Pokémon, such as Zorua and Lillipup. The DexNav you’ll
acquire here will also prove an invaluable tool in your adventure!
Wild Items
Every Pokémon can hold an Item
in the wild in RR/SS. The six Power
Items are part of any serious
Trainer’s arsenal. Zigzagoon,
Wurmple, and Poochyena have a
50% chance of carrying Power
Anklet, Power Lens, and Power
Bracer respectively. The other
three Power Items are in future
areas: Whismur in Rusturf Tunnel
holds the Power Weight, Ge-
odude in Granite Cave holds
Power Belt, and Tentacool
(which can be found by fish-
ing in most of Hoenn’s
oceans) holds Power
Band. Zigzagoon’s Pickup
ability can also pull in useful
items, such as Ability Capsules.
Honey, I’
m
Home!
If you go shopping at the Poké Mart
in Oldale town before you get the
Pokédex and Poké Balls, the only item
on sale will be sweet Honey. This item
is very cheap and forces a Horde Bat-
tle when used in tall grass or a cave.
Stock up now, because you won’t get
the chance to do so again until after
acquiring the Knuckle Badge from
Brawly in Dewford Town. Use it to
train your Pokémon, hunt for Shinies,
or just for the thrill of fighting five
Pokémon at once!
12
Level: 5
You’ll only get to see a small segment of Route 103 from this side of the
water. You’ll get your chance to visit the other side (and its veritable army
of trainers) in between Slateport City and Mauville City. For now, battle
your Rival and explore the grass. If you didn’t select Mudkip, you have two
Water-Type Pokémon on offer here: Shellos and Wingull.
Don’
t Worry Yet.
Your Rival may be packing the starter that
counters yours, but it doesn’t have a STAB
move yet. There’s no need to “grind up”
before the first fight.
With your Rival out of the way and your DexNav in hand, you can finally
pass the Collector in Oldale Town. Plenty of Wild Pokémon lurk in the
grasses of Route 102, and you’ll need to catch some to get ready for your
first new Trainer Battles. Poké Balls are 90% cheaper in RR/SS. Make sure
to buy them 10 at a time to get free Premier Balls!
Mega Bonus!
Since Ralts’ evolutions are capa-
ble of Mega Evolving, Ralts has a
high chance of holding Gardevoirite or
Galladite in the wild. Any Pokémon with a
Mega Evolution in its line can hold its
Mega Stone in the wild!

There’s not much to do in Petalburg besides heal up from battling the
Trainers on Route 102. While you can’t yet challenge Petalburg’s Gym,
you should visit your father there. Help Wally catch his Ralts, then move
on to Route 104’s South side.
Surfing and
Fishing in
Town
There are some nifty Pokémon species
in Petalburg’s small ponds. Come
back after you get the Old Rod from
Dewford and you’ll be able to catch
Goldeen here if you so desire. If
you’re playing the 679 Build, you can
acquire the dopey but pow-
erful Slowpoke using your
Old Rod. Slowpoke has
a chance of holding
Slowbronite!
The southern side of Route 104 is a pleasant seaside stroll. Wild Pokémon
wait in the grass and a Trainer on the beach. Mr. Briney’s Seaside House
will later provide you passage to Dewford Town. Why not stop in and say
“Hi” to Mr. Briney and Peeko? The grasses of South Route 104 have three
Flying-Type Pokémon available: Wingull, Pidove, and Chatot.
Don’
t Skip Trainers! Pay to Win?
Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire have a high lev-
eling curve. While many Trainers are optional, skipping Rich Boys, Ladies, and Gentlemen
them means you’re missing valuable Experience Points. often carry Full Restores,

Petalburg Woods is where you get the EXP Share, which RR/SS are bal-
anced around. Keep it on for your whole game! If you need a Grass-type
Pokémon, there’s a spectacular selection on display here. Shroomish, Cot-
tonee, Paras, and Phantump all have excellent uses, with Phantump be-
ing the first available Ghost-type. The 679 Build also offers Tangela.
The northern side of Route 104 is a sunny boardwalk over a still lake.
Make sure to visit the flower shop and get your Wailmer Pail so you can
take care of Berry crops! Leppa Berries are the most reliable way to access
PP restoration. Northern Route 104 will also be the site of your first
Special Battle type, with the Twins Gina & Mia initiating a Double Battle.
Cutting Corners
The Cut Master lives in Rustboro City,
and Roxanne’s Stone Badge enables its
use. However, Cut is practically worthless
in battle and its use is wholly optional in
Hoenn. There are some Trainers and
items behind Cut trees, however. Choose
wisely: To Cut or not to Cut?
Stay in School
Make sure to visit the Trainer’s School and
grab the Quick Claw. Sometimes, the speed
provided by the Claw will come in clutch!
19
Level: 13
Route 116 connects Rustboro Town with Rusturf Tunnel. Many Trainers
are on this route, but about half of them are behind the Cut tree. Route
116 also plays host to a couple of eccentric insects: Nincada, which
evolves into the speedy Ninjask (casting off a Shedinja in the process), and
Joltik, which evolves into the hard-hitting Galvantula.
Hidden Abilities
If you use the “Search” feature on the
DexNav, Pokémon you have encountered
multiple times have the chance to have
Egg Moves and Hidden Abilities. Poké-
mon encountered in Hordes also have a
chance to have their Hidden Ability. If
you want a Hidden Ability Eevee evolu-
tion, this is how you get it!
It’s finally time. Your first Gym Battle! Three Trainers await you before
Roxanne herself. Setting the standard for all Gym Leaders in Rutile Ruby
and Star Sapphire, Roxanne wields six Pokémon and is no pushover. Play
smart to thwart this patient trainer!
Rock Solid!
Roxanne’s Rock-Types are defensively
solid, and she has some tricks up her
sleeve to prevent you from sweeping
her with one simple tactic. Get ready
for a drawn-out battle of attrition!
Potion Woes
Your Pokémon will likely have 50 or
more HP by the time you get into
Roxanne’s Gym, but Poké Marts only
sell regular Potions! Heal strategically
and minimize your incoming damage
to ensure success.
Spoils of War
Defeating Roxanne causes Poké
Marts to expand their inventory.
In addition to the expected
Super Potions and Great
Balls, items like Max Repel
and Focus Sash are now
available in every Poké Mart!
21
Level: 18
Rusturf Tunnel links Rustboro City and Verdanturf Town. It’s filled with
Whismur, though in the 679 Build they’re joined by the Nidoran family,
the elemental monkeys, and Larvitar. You can come here before the Gym,
but the only thing to do besides fight the Wild Pokémon is trounce the
Team Aqua / Magma Grunt that stole Peeko and the Devon Parts.
Salty Runback
The President of the Devon Corporation
will upgrade your AreaNav after you
bring him the Devon Parts. You can now
re-battle many Trainers! Their teams will
increase in level the more times you re-
battle them, and they might even acquire
more Pokémon than they had before!
Try it out on your way to Mr. Briney’s
hut on Route 104.
Stopping Mall
Dewford Town doesn’t have a Poké
Mart, so stock up on goods in Rustboro
or Petalburg before coming here.
There are some pretty cool Pokémon in
Granite Cave, so stocking up on Great
Balls wouldn’t be a bad idea. Just
don’t bother buying too many Super
Potions: There’s a Fresh Water vending
machine in Dewford Gym.
Dewford Town only barely touches the edges of these two water Routes,
which you’ll be able to explore properly once you have Surf. You can fish
here, though! Route 106 leads to Granite Cave and Route 105 (with Surf).
Surfing Route 105 leads you back to Mr. Briney’s house on Route 104.

Steven awaits you in Granite Cave, but a group of Hikers block the way
until you have the Knuckle Badge from Brawly. You can’t go deeper into
the cave until you have the Mach Bike from Mauville City, but you should
still pick up the Flash TM while you’re here. Two Fighting-Types reside
here: Timburr and Makuhita. Come back after the Gym to talk to Steven!
Gotta Go
Fast
Come back to Granite
Cave’s entrance floor
with a Mach Bike and
you’ll be able to explore
the basement floors!
There are also some
Rock Smash rocks, but
they don’t block off
anything particularly
important. The Flash TM
(not HM!) given to you
here will also help
you explore the
dark depths of
Granite Cave.
Spoils of War
Defeating Brawly causes Poké Marts to ex-
pand their inventory. Honey makes its re-
turn to Poké Marts! You may be shocked
by the exorbitant price of Revives, but Sa-
cred Ash is also on sale for less than the
cost of a Revive in regular OR/AS. Sacred
Ash is a Max Revive for the whole party,
but cannot be used in battle.
Stay Fresh!
The vending machines in Brawly’s Gym
sell only one thing: Fresh Water. This
item heals 50 HP just like a Super Po-
tion and is cheaper to boot! Makes
you wonder what’s in Potions
that makes them less effec-
tive than Fresh Water...

Seashore House
The Trainers waiting in the Seashore House
pull no punches. Get in there and show
them who’s really the boss! The Sea-
shore House challenge earns you val-
uable experience and free Soda Pop, so
if you’re hot to trot, or cool cat not,
the Seashore House is your spot!
Tools of
the Trade
The girl formerly known as the Incense
Girl has taken up a new mantle! She
now sells tremendously useful items like
Leftovers, Life Orb, Assault Vest, Eviolite,
and others. They’re pricey, but they’ll
last you through the whole game.
Stock Up
On Power
Vitamins in Rutile Ruby and
Star Sapphire are much
cheaper than in standard
Pokémon games. You should defi-
nitely consider buying some to get
your Pokémon’s stats up to snuff!
After visiting Stern’s Shipyard in Slateport City, you’ll find that the Cap-
tain is currently visiting the Oceanic Museum. There’s only one problem:
The whole place is infested with Team Aqua or Magma Grunts! After
speaking to Captain Stern and battling two Grunts in succession, you’ll
get to meet the Leader of Team Magma or Aqua.
Popular Attraction
The entrance to the Oceanic
Museum will be blocked by
a line of Team Aqua or
Magma Grunts until you go
to the Shipyard and speak
to Captain Stern’s assistant.
Honor Amongst
Thieves
Make sure to speak to the Grunts occupy-
ing the Oceanic Museum. One of them
gives you TM46: Thief! Thief is a great
move in Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire be-
cause Wild Pokémon hold Items much
more often. Teach it to a Pokémon with the
Compound Eyes ability, like Joltik or Nin-
cada, and let that Pokémon lead your party
to double your chances of Wild Pokémon
holding Items! Additionally, the Thief TM
is compatible with many Pokémon,
making it useful Dark-type coverage.
Unfortunately, however, you don’t
get to keep stolen items after
Trainer Battles.
29
Level: 26
Route 110 connects Slateport City with Mauville City and the eastern part
of Route 103. Many Trainers wait on this route, so many that battling
them will likely grant you six levels before reaching Mauville City. This
Route also offers you several Electric-type Pokémon: Electrike, Voltorb,
Plusle, Minun, and (in the 679 Build) the Electric/Steel Magnemite.
Tricky Tricks
The Trick House is on Route 110, and
it’s filled with challenges. The Trainers
within are leveled according to the
HMs necessary to navigate each
puzzle layout, so don’t worry about
them being higher level than you.
A small pond is all that separates this Route from its Western counterpart,
which connects to Oldale Town. There’s some Berries available behind a
Cut tree, but other than that, the only reason to visit Route 103’s Eastern
side is to gain experience before battling your Rival on Route 110. It’s very
recommended you do so, because your Rival is no pushover!
No Tall Grass
Route 103, despite having an encounter table
printed here, has no grass on its eastern side.
To catch the Pokémon listed for the grass in
this area, you’ll need to return to the western
side of Route 103, near
Oldale Town.
TM Central
There was a TM vendor in Slateport
Market, but his selection pales in
comparison to that of the humble
clerk in the back of Mauville’s
Poké Mart. Of particular note is
Bulldoze, which will be great
against Electric-types in
Wattson’s Gym.
Get Wheels!
Stop by Rydel’s Bike Shop to get
a free Bike of your choice. The
Acro Bike allows you to access
areas that require tricks, but the
Mach Bike goes faster and can
also ride up sandy slopes. If you
want to go back and explore
Granite Cave’s basement
floors, pick up the Mach Bike!
32
Level: 32
Cycling Road is technically part of Route 110, but you can only access it if
you have a Bicycle in your possession! It provides a quick route between
Mauville and Slateport, and doesn’t have any Wild Pokémon on it… But
it’s a hangout space for athletic Trainers and their speedy Pokémon! You
can even race against the clock on your commute.
Stay Focused
If you’re having trouble with a
Trainer with fast, strong, fragile
Pokémon that can one-shot your
Pokémon, consider purchasing a
Focus Sash from the Poké Mart.
It guarantees you’ll survive one
hit and be able to fire off a
counterattack!
Hidden In
Plain Sight
A Beauty who somehow managed
to get onto Cycling Road without a
Bicycle is hiding under the Mauville
side overpass. Near her is a
Manectite, which is a useful item if
your Electrike didn’t come bearing
one already.
33
Level: 34
Three trainers and a Stardust wait for you on the Route east of
Mauville City. Come back here after you get Surf from the Petal-
burg City Gym to cross the water and access Route 118’s eastern
side, which is considerably more interesting!
Challenge
Pays Off!
The amount of money you win
after a Trainer Battle is based on
the opponent’s Level, so you
make a lot more money per battle
in Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire!
This is good, because with Hold
Items on sale and Healing Items
still a necessity, you need every
penny.
You won’t be able to enter Route 111 proper until you have Rock Smash
and the Dynamo Badge, but there is one important diversion on this
Route that you might want to visit before challenging Wattson: The Win-
strate House. You can fish up Barboach here, adding a third Water/
Ground option if you didn’t pick Mudkip and skipped Shellos.
Quick Eggs!
In Pokémon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire,
it only takes 256 steps to hatch any Egg.
You can use O-Powers or Flame Body /
Magma Armor to lower this
number of steps even further!
This doesn’t apply
to Eggs ob-
tained in events
or trades.
Specialized Tools
The second clerk at Verdanturf’s Poké Mart sells three special types of Poké Ball: The
Luxury Ball helps Pokémon build Friendship faster, which is perfect for Pokémon that
evolve through Friendship such as Eevee. The Heal Ball is useful if you want to use a
captured Pokémon immediately after adding it to your party. The Nest Ball helps catch
lower-level Pokémon and will prove invaluable for Legit Build users!
Missing Mush
A little girl in the south side of
Verdanturf Town is missing her
Shroomish! Check behind
the sign and Mushew
will come out of
hiding and go
back to its
Trainer.
Legitimized!
Players of the Leveled Build can make their
captured Pokémon legal for trade by simply
adjusting the “Met Level” of their Pokémon in
the PC program PKHeX. Use a homebrew
app like SVDT or JKSV to back up your
save, edit it on your computer, then re-
store it back to your game! You can do the
same with Pokémon in the 679 Build, but
only the ones that aren’t uniquely
available in the 679 Build.

Picking up a Mach Bike at Rydel’s Cycles means that you can finally go up
the steep, sandy slope keeping you from exploring the depths of Granite
Cave. Rare Pokémon lurk in the dark depths of the cave, and TM65:
Shadow Claw is also yours for the taking. The Flash TM can light the
place up, but Granite Cave is fully navigable without it.
Steep Slopes
While the Mach Bike is popular
with Trainers thanks to its high
speed, its other unique function is
the ability to ride up sandy slopes,
like the ones in Granite Cave.

Wattson’s team of Electric-types is not to
be underestimated. The Electric type
only has one weakness: Ground.
But with only one weakness, Watt-
son can focus on covering it!
Spoils of War
Defeating Wattson causes Poké Marts
to expand their inventory. Poké Marts
now sell Ultra Balls, Premier Balls,
and Weakness Policies!
39
Level: 42
Your newfound ability to use Rock Smash after defeating Wattson in his
gym gives you access to the middle part of Route 111. No Wild Pokémon
are available here, and you can’t access the Route 111 Desert quite yet,
either. After some Trainer battles, you’ll find Route 112! Continue through
Route 112 to enter the Fiery Path.
Helpful Rival
Don’t use your healing items after beat-
ing Route 111’s Trainers, or you’ll feel
very silly when Brendan or May offers to
heal up your entire team when you cross
onto Route 112.
Since you can’t take the Cable Car to the top of Mt. Chimney, you’ll have
to take the long road around the mountain. Part of this is the sweltering
Fiery Path! The Pollution Duo, Grimer and Koffing, are on offer here as
solid bulky Poison-types, and Diglett can be a powerful asset to any team,
especially with its Arena Trap ability.
Build Up Strength
To fully explore the Fiery Path, you’ll need
access to the Strength HM. Behind the
Strength Boulder is one of the strongest TMs
in the game, TM06 Toxic. Every Pokémon
capable of learning TMs has access to this
debilitating status condition. While stalling
with ever-worsening Poison is usually too
slow a strategy for most players’ taste in-
game, in Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire it
could be the difference between victory and
agonizing defeat. Toxic never misses when
used by a Poison-type Pokémon!
Ace of Hurts
Ace Trainers will almost always pack teams
of six Pokémon. They are also likely to have
Mega Stones on hand, so be prepared
before walking in front of an Ace!
Top Secrets!
You’ll obtain TM94: Secret Power from Aarune on
Route 111 (North), allowing you to make Secret Bases.
Unfortunately, Secret Bases won’t be good training until
the postgame for you, since the level cap for opposing ROUTE 111 (NORTH)
Bases will be much lower than your team’s average Level. POKÉMON R. SMASH SURF FISH ROD

gather ash from the large piles and visit the small house here, where a
man will fashion it into useful or decorative Items!

Finally, civilization! Fallarbor Town is home to a Contest Hall, Professor
Cozmo’s Lab, and the incredibly useful Move Maniac. While Fallarbor
Town doesn’t play host to a Gym, it is a valuable pit stop on the way to
Meteor Falls thanks to its Pokémon Center and Poké Mart. Remember to
stock up and heal before venturing to rescue Professor Cozmo!
For Science!
When you first enter Fallarbor Town,
your Rival will rush you and inform you of a
troubling turn of events: Professor Cozmo
has been abducted by Team Magma or
Team Aqua! Make your way through
Route 114 and Meteor Falls to save him
from their evil clutches!
Meeting“Someone”
In Fallarbor Town’s Pokémon Center, you’ll meet
Lanette for the first time, though she won’t give
you anything interesting. Meeting her will change
“Someone’s PC” to “Lanette’s PC”, however. Meet
up with her on Route 114 to get a very unique
reward!
Show Me Your
Moves!
The Move Maniac lives in Fallarbor Town
and will, for the price of a Heart Scale,
teach your Pokémon any move they
missed while leveling up (or any forgotten
Egg Move). Heart Scales can be gathered
from Magikarp in RR/SS! Make sure to
check your team here, since Pokémon
sometimes have “hidden” moves
that they learn at Level 1.

Route 114, which connects Fallarbor Town with Meteor Falls, is teeming
with Wild Pokémon! Lanette, creator of Hoenn’s PC Storage System, lives
on this Route in a humble home. Fishermen dip their lines in the still
waters, hoping to land the big one. Hikers traverse the rugged, cratered
plateau that leads to the cave that holds Meteor Falls.
Tech Support
Lanette, who you met in Fallarbor Town’s
Pokémon Center, makes her home in a
simple house here on Route 114. If you
speak to her, she’ll give you a Doll, but
more importantly, she will allow you to
put the Organize Boxes option on top of
the PC’s menu! No more “Deposit Poké-
mon” as the default!
A cave carved by a waterfall and pocked with craters, Meteor Falls is home
to many exotic Pokémon. The mysterious Solrock and Lunatone make
their nest here, and some Dragon-types are also found roaming the cave.
Did the Clefairy that make their nest here arrive on a meteorite from the
moon?
Everyday Legends
While Legendary Pokémon aren’t common in the
wild, some dedicated Trainers in Rutile Ruby and Star
Sapphire have tracked them down and use them on
their teams! Not all Legendary Pokémon are dispro-
portionately powerful, but be ready for anything!
Admin-ister A
Beatdown!
Mt. Chimney will be the site of your
next battle against Team Magma’s
Admin Tabitha or Team Aqua’s
Admin Shelly! Fresh off their loss to
you and your Rival in Meteor Falls,
each Admin has added one new
Pokémon to their team (remember,
three of the Pokémon in the Double
Battle belonged to a Grunt
partner)! A thirsty-for-
revenge Admin shouldn’t be
a problem for you, though!
Defeating the Admin will give
you the right to challenge the
true boss: Team Magma’s
Maxie or Team Aqua’s Archie!

Your next Gym is finally on the horizon! After clearing Mt. Chimney, head
south to the perilous Jagged Pass. If you need a Fighting-Type Pokémon,
you can snag a Tyrogue or Machop here… Or you can use Honey or Sweet
Scent to draw out a Horde of the Hitmon Trio: Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee,
and Hitmontop!

After a brief sojourn with Route 112 (South), you’ll find yourself in
Lavaridge Town: Town of hot springs, of herbal medicine, and (most
importantly) of Flannery’s Fire-Type Gym! For once, there’s really nothing
to do before you hit the Gym. Heal up, stock up on Items, and go show
Flannery what a hot battle really looks like!
Egg-ceptions
In Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire, every
species’ Eggs hatch very quickly. The
exception to this rule is any Egg ob-
tained in a trade or through an in-
game event! The Egg obtained here
will take its normal amount of steps to
hatch, but will almost always display as
needing many more steps to hatch.

How long has it been since you’ve challenged a Gym Leader? The fiery
Flannery awaits you in Lavaridge’s Gym. There’s nothing stopping you
from bum-rushing her Gym immediately after entering Lavaridge Town,
so stock up on Items, heal up at the Pokémon Center, and have at it! Earn-
ing the Heat Badge will also earn you… Your father’s respect as a Trainer.
Heat of Battle
Being a Fire-type specialist in Hoenn
must be tough. With no shortage of Wa-
ter and Ground types available, Flan-
nery’s challengers have many Pokémon
to choose from! However, Flannery has
one special ace up her sleeve...
Spoils of War
Defeating Flannery causes Poké Marts
to expand their inventory, but only by
a little: Max Potions are now available
in Poké Marts!
50
Level: 57
After defeating Flannery, your rival will offer an instant trip all the way
back to Petalburg Town, but that would mean you’d skip Route 111’s De-
sert! A large selection of Ground-types is available here, in addition to lots
of potential Experience. Harsh winds whip up a Sandstorm here, and it
persists into battle! Trainers in the desert might take advantage of this...
Root or Claw?
Route 111’s Desert is home to Hoenn’s
natural Fossils, the Root Fossil and the
Claw Fossil. These fossils can be revived
into Lileep and Anorith respective-
ly. Choose wisely; you only get
to take one.
After earning the Heat Badge, your father Norman will finally accept your
challenge at his Gym in Petalburg City. Norman’s Normal-Type Pokémon
run a variety of strategies, and his team is relatively balanced out. Getting
to him will require you to choose paths to battle different Trainers. Be
prepared for a straight-up test of your will as a Trainer!
Spoils of War
Defeating Norman will unlock the
final item in PokéMarts’ stock: The
Full Restore. Like the Revive, this item
has had a massive price hike in RR/
SS due to its potential to swing
battles in your favor!

Since Wally takes you to Mauville City, heading south to explore Route
109 is the obvious place to start your aquatic exploration. Route 109
connects Slateport City to the aquatic Route 108, and it is populated with
Pokémon Trainers aching to test their teams’ mettle against yours!
Homebound
Now that you have Surf, you can
visit Oldale Town and Littleroot
Town by Surfing to the west
across the water on Route 103!
This is a great time to check in on
your Pokédex and talk to your Surfing Across Hoenn

Obtaining the Balance Badge will give you the ability to
use Surf outside of battle, and Wally’s dad will give you
the HM itself immediately after you leave the Gym.
Wally will escort you to Mauville City; heading East will
take you to Route 118 which will progress the story.
However, your newfound mobility gives you the ability
to go back and explore many of Hoenn’s aquatic
Routes! Should you choose to embark on this marine
POKÉMON SURF FISH ROD journey, you can hit Routes 105, 106, 107, 108, 109,

search facility Sea Mauville is perma-
nently moored. Come back here with
Dive to get some powerful Items! For
now, there’s Trainers to battle and
TM18: Rain Dance to claim.
Route 107 connects Route 108 to the eastern side of Dewford Town. It’s a
pretty straight shot, populated by ten Trainers! Aside from its
concentration of swimming Pokémon Trainers, there’s not much else
notable about Route 107.
Exploring
The Depths
After you obtain the Dive HM
much later in the game, dark
patches of water indicate depths
that you can Dive underwater
and explore! Some Pokémon
species live exclusively on the sea
floor, and sometimes you’ll meet
scuba-diving Trainers while
you’re plunging into the abyss!
The abandoned ship on Route 108 is the research vessel Sea Mauville.
While your first visit will yield only a TM and some Trainer battles, come
back when you have access to Dive to truly explore this mysterious marine
laboratory.
Dancin’In The

on your first visit! Weather moves are
incredibly potent strategies

Surf north from the west side of Dewford Town to explore Route 106,

this route to get back to Petalburg Town!
The aquatic Route 105 connects Route 106 (west of Dewford Town) to
Route 104 (west of Petalburg Town). It plays host to a series of swimming
Trainers and a mysterious island. The Island Cave is the home of not one,
but two Legendary Golems: Regice and Regigigas!
North of Rustboro Town is the last optional Surfing route available. This
Route, above the others, is recommended for you to visit! It connects
Rustboro Town to Meteor Falls and has a grass patch with some rare
Pokémon available.
After finishing your cruise across Hoenn’s waters, make your way to Mau-
ville City and head east to surf across the water and reach Route 118’s
Eastern side. Here you’ll find tall grass, new Trainers to battle, and a new
Fishing Rod! You’ll also encounter Steven and a Legendary Pokémon that
needs your help.
After Latias or Latios drops you off, you’ll find out why it
brought you here: its twin is being hunted by Team Magma or
Team Aqua for its Mega Stone! Fight off the Admin and a Grunt
in a Double Battle alongside Steven to claim a Mega Bracelet
of your own… And a Legendary Pokémon!
Admins

Team Magma Admin, but not
the same one you trounced in
Meteor Falls: Now you’ll be

the Berry Garden, the best place in all Hoenn to grow and nurture Berries!
Once you have the Fly HM, you’ll be able to fly directly to the Garden.
Berry Garden

Garden, home of the highest number of Berry
plots in Hoenn! You can also snag the Grepa,
Qualot, and Pomeg Berries here, which remove
EVs from a Pokémon’s stats and increase their

chance to give you the other three EV-lowering
Berries: Tomato, Kelpsy, and Hondew.
