Competencies Competency 9: Communicates appropriately

Broad Areas of Environmental Awareness

learning

OBJECTIVES/ • Students will be able to:

OUTCOMES - Name the four cardinal points
- Locate objects and give directions using cardinal points
- Know how compasses work

Entire class
GROUP SIZE Signs labelled North, South, East and West on the classroom walls
& MATERIALS Magnetic compass
Paper-made compass
Booklet of activity
Pencils/pens
Smartboard

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES:
1. To act as a professional inheritor, critic and interpreter of knowledge or culture when teaching
students.
I will show students an image of a compass and ask them what it is used for. I will ask students if they
know how to determine the 4 cardinal directions if they were outside in the morning or in the
afternoon. (The sun rises from the East, sets in the West).

2. To communicate clearly in the language of instruction, both orally and in writing, using correct
grammar, in various contexts related to teaching.
I will communicate the information on cardinal directions in a way that children can understand. I
will explain to them unfamiliar words.
3. To develop teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and the
subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study
I have organized activities to familiarize students with cardinal directions. One activity will involve
moving, the other will be about manipulating a compass and the other is a booklet of activity students
can use to practice their directions.
4. To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and to the
subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study.
I will do a few exercises on cardinal directions on the board with students before letting them practice
on their own. I will help students familiarize themselves with the compass in small groups.
5. To evaluate student progress in learning the subject content and mastering the related
competencies.
I will assess student’s knowledge about the four directions by analyzing their booklet and asking them
questions when I will work in large and small groups with them.
6. To plan, organize and supervise a class in such a way as to promote students’ learning and
social development.
I have considered classroom setting for my lesson. Students will have a chance to work at their desk,
stand in the classroom during games and walk to practice using a compass. To gain students attention
or for transition, I will use a chime. I will use class dojo if needed.
7. To adapt his or her teaching to the needs and characteristics of students with learning
disabilities, social maladjustments or handicaps.
Students will be able to move during games, kinesthetic learners will benefit.
8. To integrate information and communications technologies (ICT) in the preparation and delivery
of teaching/learning activities and for instructional management and professional development
purposes.
I will use the Smartboard during the lesson.

TIME LESSON
Introduction:
15 I will play the chime and when everyone is quiet and looking at the
Min. Smartboard I will start the lesson.

I will tell students to close their eyes and imagine they are a pirate that
set sail to the sea in search of a big and mighty treasure in an island in
the North. They only have their backpack with them and their boat.

In the bag there are a few objects (show picture of objects): A map,
candies, a magnifying glass, glasses, a compass, notebook etc.

The pirate must use any of these items to find the island of treasure.
Among all the items which should he pick?

Students should say: The compass and map.

TIME LESSON

(Show image on board and write “compass” on blackboard)

I will ask students why they picked those items.

If students picked the map only, I will ask them how do they know which way
to steer their boat by only looking at the map and remember that the ocean
is vast and it would be easy to get lost. The answer should lead back to the
cardinal directions.

In regards to compass, I will ask them where have they seen it before?
What is it used for? What is written on it?

Students should respond that it is a compass, it has north, south, east

and west written on it. I will tell them that we call these the four
“cardinal points” and write it on the board. They might know that a
compass is used to tell directions or to find your way if you get lost.

I will tell students that you sometimes find a compass rose on maps
and show them a picture.

I will stick the four cardinal points (N, E, S, W) on the paper compass
I’ve made. I will ask students once more for the name of each cardinal
point.

I will tell them that the directions follow a certain order. I will give them
a trick to remember the order (Never Eat Slimy Worms).

I will ask students, let’s pretend the pirate has been sailing for a while
but lost his compass at the bottom of the ocean in the morning. How
can he tell which way to keep going?

If students cannot answer, I will ask them “From what direction does
the sun rises”. The sun rises from the East and sets in the West.
Knowing one direction can help determine the others. I will practice
this in class. I will ask them and show them “If East is here, where
would North be?”.
TIME LESSON
Development: Practicing the cardinals

PART 1: Games
10  I will ask students to stand up and stand behind their chairs. I
min. will have them observe the four directions written on papers
for: around the classroom. We will play a game where I will yell out a
direction and they will have to face that direction.

PART 2: Booklet of activity/compass

25  I will explain the booklet that students must complete. If they are
min. not finished by the end of the period, we will continue next class.
for:
 Whilst students are working on the booklet, I will take them in
groups of 5 to explain how to use the compass and practice. I
will tell them that the red arrow indicates North. They will
practice identifying the other cardinals knowing where North is. I
may ask them things like “Take 2 steps North, 1 step West” to
see if they are able to do it whilst looking at the compass.

CLOSURE /TRANSITION:
5 min.  I will have students summarize what we learned during the
lesson. Namely that there are four cardinal directions (North,
South, East And West), the sun rises from the East and sets in
the West and the compass helps us navigate ourselves.

Evaluations/Assessment:
 Were the children able to articulate the four cardinal points?
 Were they able to understand how to use a compass?
 Were they able to figure out the locations of other directions
knowing where North is?
 Were they able to locate objects or give directions using the
cardinal points?

Formative assessment: The booklet of activity completed by students

Differentiations:
 I introduced a game that involved moving for kinesthetic
students
 Extension/Advancement: Help students familiarize themselves
with the terms North-East, South-East, North-West and South-
West.
