RISK ASSESSMENT IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING WORKSHOP
FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

I. INTRODUCTION
A secure workplace is everybody’s dream, to make it secure we must manage the
health and safety of the workplace. To obtain the security we must control or eliminate the
risk that possess threat to the worker. Before the risk is going to happen, we must think
about what might cause harm to people and decide whether you are taking reasonable
steps to prevent that harm. This is known as risk assessment and it is something you are
required by law to carry out. A risk assessment is not about creating huge amounts of
paperwork, but rather about identifying sensible measures to control the risks in your
workplace. You are probably already taking steps to protect your employees, but your risk
assessment will help you decide whether you have covered all you need to.
The risk that might happen in the workplace can be assessed by:
1. Identify the hazards
One of the most important aspects of risk assessment is accurately identifying the
potential hazards in your workplace. A good starting point is to walk around your
workplace and think about any hazards. In other words, what is it about the activities,
processes or substances used that could injure your employees or harm their health?
When you work in a place every day it is easy to overlook some hazards, so here are
some tips to help you identify the ones that matter:
 Check manufacturers' instructions or data sheets for chemicals and equipment as
they can be very helpful in spelling out the hazards and putting them in their true
perspective.
 Look back at your accident and ill-health records - these often help to identify the
less obvious hazards.
 Take account of non-routine operations (eg. maintenance, cleaning operations or
changes in production cycles).
 Remember to think about long-term hazards to health (eg. high levels of noise or
exposure to harmful substances).
 Visit the HSE website. HSE publishes practical guidance on hazards and how to
control them.
2. Decide who might be harmed and how
Think how employees (or others who may be present such as contractors or visitors)
might be harmed. Ask your employees what they think the hazards are, as they may notice
things that are not obvious to you and may have some good ideas on how to control the
risks.
For each hazard, you need to be clear about who might be harmed; it will help you identify
the best way of controlling the risk. That doesn't mean listing everyone by name, but
rather identifying groups of people (eg 'people working in the storeroom' or 'passers-by').
3. Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
Having identified the hazards, you then must decide how likely it is that harm will
occur; ie the level of risk and what to do about it. Risk is a part of everyday life and you
are not expected to eliminate all risks. What you must do is make sure you know about the
main risks and the things you need to do to manage them responsibly.
Generally, you need to do everything 'reasonably practicable'. This means balancing the
level of risk against the measures needed to control the real risk in terms of money, time
or trouble. However, you do not need to take action if it would be grossly disproportionate
to the level of risk.

4. Record your significant findings


Make a record of your significant findings - the hazards, how people might be
harmed by them and what you have in place to control the risks. Any record produced
should be simple and focused on controls.
5. Review your assessment and update if necessary
Few workplaces stay the same. Sooner or later, you will bring in new equipment,
substances and procedures that could lead to new hazards. So, it makes sense to review
what you are doing on an ongoing basis, look at your risk assessment again and ask
yourself:
 Have there been any significant changes?
 Are there improvements you still need to make?
 Have your workers spotted a problem?
 Have you learnt anything from accidents or near misses?
Make sure your risk assessment stays up to date.
II.RISK ASSESSEMENT MATRIX
Risk assessment matrix is a project management tool that allows a single page – quick
view of the probable risks evaluated in terms of the likelihood or probability of the risk and
the severity of the consequences. A risk assessment matrix is easier to make, since most of
the information needed can be easily extracted from the risk assessment forms. It is made
in the form of a simple table where the risks are grouped based on their likelihood and the
extent of damages or the kind of consequences that the risks can result in.
In this report the risk assessment matrix is divided into 3 sections:
III. RISK PROFILING GRID

Risk profiling grid is a grid or table that classify the risk that found in the workplace. It
will grade the risk per the level of the risk found in the workplace. Below is the risk
profiling grid that used to grade the level of the risk.

IV. WORKPLACE ASSESSMENT


The assessment was held in mechanical engineering workshop on 6th of March 1017.
The condition of the workshop is not in operation because only used in the first semester
of the year. There are several risks that found in the assessment. The findings are
categorized into improbable to probable (likelihood) and negligible to significant
(Severity). Here are some pictures of the Mechanical Engineering workshop:
V. THE RISK THAT FOUND
The risks that found in the workshop are many but here only mention 2 risk that had
been assessed. The format is in the section format that can be understood easily.
Risk Assessment 1 is focusing on the wielding activity that might cause harm to the
wielder. The risk here mainly is the hot and smoke that produced from the wielding
activity. Most of the case that happens is caused by human error during the activity.
Risk number 2 is the risk that can be caused by LATHE machine that can cause
significant damage to the student that operate it. The damage that mention here is cut
damage by the rotating part of the machine. The main cause of the accident mostly by the
human error on the operation of the machine.
